Convertible laptops usually make you accept a compromise. A 360-degree hinge can turn a notebook into a tablet, but it leaves the keyboard exposed on the back. A detachable 2-in-1 solves that problem, but separating the keyboard and screen is not always ideal for laptop work.

VAIO is revisiting a different solution with the new VAIO T (VCTNN1) and business-focused VAIO T work (VBTNN1). Their Multi-Flip Mechanism lets the display move between laptop, tablet, and view modes to create laptop, view, and tablet modes without folding the keyboard behind the screen.
The question is whether this unusual approach makes a modern convertible more useful.
Three modes without a rear keyboard
In laptop mode, the VAIO T behaves like a conventional notebook. Rotate the display and it can face away from the keyboard in view mode, making it easier to show someone across a desk what is on your screen. Switch to tablet mode and the design appears to avoid leaving the keyboard on the rear surface while using the touchscreen.
VAIO positions the three modes around writing, thinking, and sharing content. The practical advantage is that you can change how the screen is presented without rotating the entire computer.
For someone presenting designs, sharing documents with a client, or moving between keyboard and touch input, that could be useful. Whether it is actually more convenient than a conventional 360-degree convertible will require hands-on testing.
A 13.3-inch touchscreen
Both models use a 13.3-inch, 16:10 WQXGA touchscreen with a 2560 × 1600 resolution. VAIO calls it a Flush Surface Touch Display, with a single glass surface covering the display area. The 16:10 aspect ratio provides more vertical space than a traditional 16:9 screen, which can be useful for documents, websites, and productivity applications.
Weight is worth considering if tablet mode is important to you. The consumer VAIO T starts at approximately 1.262kg, while the VAIO T work starts at approximately 1.299kg.
Those figures are reasonable for a laptop, but these machines will not feel like lightweight standalone tablets when held for extended periods.
Core Ultra Series 3 inside
The VAIO T uses Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, including the Core Ultra 5 325 and Core Ultra 7 356H; the VAIO Store-exclusive Kachi-iro Special Edition can be configured with a Core Ultra X7 358H. The business-focused VAIO T work uses the Core Ultra 7 356H.
Select VAIO T configurations offer up to 64GB of soldered LPDDR5X memory and PCIe 5.0 SSD storage. These Copilot+ PCs deliver roughly 47 to 50 TOPS of NPU performance, depending on the processor.
VAIO’s TruePerformance technology is available on H-series models, though its real-world impact will depend on the workload and cooling.
Battery varies by configuration
VAIO offers standard- and high-capacity battery options. Depending on configuration, VAIO rates standard-battery consumer configurations for approximately 12 to 12.5 hours of video playback and 20.5 to 21 hours at idle under the JEITA 3.0 standard. Battery life varies by configuration and use.
Those are standardized manufacturer test results rather than guarantees of everyday battery life. Processor configuration, brightness, wireless activity, applications, and workload can all affect actual runtime.
Ports and wireless
The VAIO T series includes two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4, USB4, USB Power Delivery, and DisplayPort 2.1 support. It also has two USB-A ports, HDMI, wired Ethernet, and a headset jack.
Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. VAIO also equips the laptops with a 9.2-megapixel front camera with Windows Hello facial recognition, triple microphones, and Dolby Atmos audio.
Durability is part of the pitch
A display that repeatedly rotates inside its frame raises an obvious question about long-term durability.
VAIO says it conducts its own quality tests, including testing specifically for the Multi-Flip Mechanism. VAIO says the computers passed selected tests conducted under company-defined conditions based on MIL-STD-810H.
That wording matters. VAIO explicitly states that its MIL-based testing does not guarantee the computers will remain undamaged or failure-free after drops, shocks, vibration, or changes in operating environment.
The testing indicates that VAIO evaluated durability during development, but it does not tell us how an individual VAIO T will hold up after years of repeated flipping. Only longer-term use can establish that.
Consumer and business options
The VAIO T comes in Fine Red and Fine Black, plus the VAIO Store-exclusive Kachi-iro Special Edition. That special version is also where buyers can select the higher-end Core Ultra X7 358H.
The VAIO T work comes in Fine Black and is aimed at corporate customers. Both models share the same basic Multi-Flip concept and 13.3-inch display.
VAIO is also emphasizing video conferencing, with a three-microphone AI noise-cancellation system designed to reduce unwanted background sound. That is another feature where actual effectiveness will need to be judged through testing rather than specifications alone.
In Japan, VAIO says orders open September 18, 2026. The consumer VAIO T is scheduled to go on sale at Nojima stores on September 22, while the earliest delivery through VAIO’s direct online store is September 30.
Who should consider the VAIO T?
The VAIO T is best suited to people who regularly move between typing, touch input, and sharing a screen with others. Its Multi-Flip design is particularly useful for meetings, presentations, and collaborative work, where turning a conventional laptop around can be awkward.
