Buying a mechanical chronograph can force a surprisingly specific choice. You may like the substantial look of a steel sports watch but not want nearly 200 grams on your wrist, or you may prefer leather but worry about giving up the visual presence that makes a chronograph appealing in the first place.
Seiko’s new Prospex Speedtimer HBD001 and HBD002 make that choice unusually straightforward. Both use the same 42mm case dimensions, Caliber 8R48 automatic chronograph movement, dual-curved sapphire crystal, and 10-bar water resistance. The $2,500 HBD001 comes on a stainless-steel bracelet, while the $2,400 HBD002 uses a cow-leather strap. Both are scheduled to arrive in September 2026.
That $100 price difference is small. The difference in how the two watches should feel on the wrist is not.
Both look back to a 1972 Seiko chronograph
Seiko says the design takes inspiration from a chronograph it released in 1972. Its Japanese product pages are more specific, identifying the historic watch as a model powered by Caliber 6138 and pointing to its streamlined case as one of the design references carried into these new Speedtimers.

These are not simple reproductions. Seiko says its current watchmaking technologies have refined the classic case construction, pairing the HBD001 with a steel bracelet and the HBD002 with a cow-leather strap.

A dual-curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface protects the dial, while Seiko applies its super-hard coating to the stainless-steel case.
The dial prioritizes legibility
Chronographs can become visually busy quickly. You have normal timekeeping, multiple registers, a date display, and a tachymeter scale all competing for attention. Seiko addresses that by giving the subdials different surface finishes. The company says those variations are intended to improve chronograph legibility, while sky-blue accents provide contrast and reference scenery passing during a drive.
Both watches include 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters, a date display, stop-seconds functionality for more precise time setting, LumiBrite on the hands and indexes, and a tachymeter scale.
That gives the HBD001 and HBD002 the complexity expected from a proper mechanical chronograph without turning the dial into an exercise in decoding tiny markings.
Caliber 8R48 is the upgrade
A central reason these watches sit above Seiko’s solar Speedtimers in price is the movement inside. Both use Seiko’s Caliber 8R48 automatic chronograph movement with manual winding. It has 34 jewels, approximately 45 hours of power reserve, and a stated accuracy range of +25 to -15 seconds per day.
The movement also uses a column wheel and vertical clutch. Those are features associated with smoother chronograph operation and more controlled starts of the chronograph seconds hand, helping make the 8R48 a more enthusiast-focused proposition than Seiko’s quartz-powered alternatives.
That accuracy figure is an important reminder of what you are buying. A quartz or solar chronograph will generally make more sense if precision and minimal maintenance are your priorities. The appeal here is mechanical construction and the experience of owning an automatic chronograph.
With roughly 45 hours of power reserve, either watch will likely need winding and resetting if left unworn for about two days. For the right buyer, that is not a drawback. It is part of why you choose an automatic Speedtimer in the first place.
The HBD001 brings steel heft
The $2,500 HBD001 is the more traditional choice because Seiko pairs the stainless-steel case with a matching bracelet.
Seiko lists the complete watch at 183 grams. That is substantial, and anyone sensitive to heavy watches should pay attention to that number. At the same time, the bracelet makes the HBD001 feel like the more complete expression of the classic steel sports chronograph concept.

That makes the HBD002 more than simply the cheaper version. If you like the 42mm Speedtimer design but do not want the weight of a full steel bracelet, the leather model provides the same 8R48-powered formula in a noticeably lighter package. The strap also makes the watch look a little less aggressive and potentially easier to move between casual and dressier settings.
Both are daily-wear capable
Despite the vintage inspiration, these are not fragile throwbacks. Both offer 10-bar water resistance, magnetic resistance to 4,800 A/m, screw casebacks, LumiBrite, and sapphire crystals. The 20mm lug width should also make changing straps relatively straightforward if you want to change the look later.
That everyday usability matters at this price. These are mechanical chronographs you can build into a regular rotation rather than pieces that demand special treatment.

Choose the HBD001 if you want the full steel Speedtimer experience. The bracelet gives it greater visual presence, and the additional $100 is modest relative to the overall purchase. Just make sure you are comfortable with a watch weighing 183 grams.
The HBD002 is the smarter choice if wrist comfort matters more. You save $100, drop 60 grams, and keep the same Caliber 8R48 movement, case dimensions, sapphire crystal, chronograph functions, and 10-bar water resistance.
The choice is refreshingly simple: the HBD001 is for buyers who want the visual unity and heft of a steel sports chronograph, while the HBD002 keeps the same mechanical package in a lighter, more understated format.
