GE’s Opal Mini Makes 36 Pounds of Nugget Ice in a Smaller Footprint

A countertop ice maker earns its counter space only if it stops feeling like another small appliance you have to work around. That is the challenge GE Profile is chasing with its newest countertop launch. GE Profile’s new Opal Mini tries to clear that hurdle by cutting the Opal footprint by 30 percent while keeping the company’s claimed daily output at up to 36 pounds of nugget ice.

GE announced the Opal Mini lineup earlier this month. The Charcoal Grey base model is listed at $279 through GE Appliances, putting the story squarely on convenience, not a new category of ice machine.

The countertop problem GE is trying to solve

Nugget ice makers have a straightforward appeal: they turn out small, chewable pieces rather than large cubes. The catch is physical. A machine that takes over a narrow kitchen counter, bar cart, or office kitchenette has to justify every inch.

GE says the Opal Mini is 30 percent smaller than the Opal Ultra. That is the lead feature because it changes who can reasonably leave one out every day, especially people with limited prep space.

The smaller shell doesn’t mean a smaller daily claim

GE lists up to 36 pounds of nugget ice per day for the Opal Mini. GE says the ice maker typically produces its first batch of nugget ice in as little as 10 minutes under normal conditions, though output will depend on the conditions in a real kitchen. That is a better pitch than chasing a novelty feature. A compact appliance works when it can handle a steady stream of glasses without becoming the thing that needs moving before dinner starts.

Cleaning is part of the product, not an afterthought

The Opal Mini brings a top-fill reservoir to the new design. GE also highlights a front access point for cleaning and descaling, plus a Drain and Dry system designed to make that routine less awkward.

Those are manufacturer-described features, not hands-on findings. Still, the placement is telling: countertop ice machines live or die by whether regular maintenance feels manageable enough to do.

The $279 Mini sits below two upgraded versions

The base Charcoal Grey Opal Mini is listed at $279 on GE Appliances. GE places the Mini Pro at $379 and the Mini Pro+ at $399, so buyers have a clear entry point before deciding if the higher trims are worth the premium. GE says Mini Pro and Mini Pro+ models add a side tank. The company also lists new Peony Pink, Moss Green, and Moonstone Blue finishes for fall 2026, giving the lineup a more decorative direction than a typical stainless countertop appliance.

What buyers should wait to see

The launch materials make the size, price, cleaning approach, and claimed daily output clear. They don’t settle the questions that only longer ownership can answer, including noise, ice texture over a full day, and how often the cleaning system needs attention in a hard-water home. TG’s own hands-on reviews of the Ecozy 451B and Costway countertop nugget ice makers found that noise and cleaning routines mattered as much as raw output once the units left the test bench.

That doesn’t weaken the announcement. It simply keeps the choice in the right place: buyers who already want nugget ice can decide whether the smaller footprint solves their space problem, while everyone else can wait for more ownership data.

GE picked the right pressure point. A countertop appliance doesn’t need another screen or a louder feature list. It needs to fit where people actually live, make the promised thing in useful volume, and avoid turning cleaning into a weekend chore. At $279, it is still a discretionary kitchen upgrade, but it finally sounds like one deliberately designed for a counter that has other jobs.

Where this launch lands

The launch arrives in a category where the basic promise has never been difficult to explain. People know why they want chewable ice. The harder sell has been accepting another large object near the coffee maker, toaster, and cutting board.

GE’s answer isn’t to make the appliance disappear. It is to reduce the footprint while retaining the production claim that makes a countertop machine useful for guests, family dinners, or a shared office. That is a more practical upgrade path than adding complexity for its own sake.
