XbotGo Chameleon review – Your personal AI sports cameraman

REVIEW – My daughter is a serious up-and-coming soccer player, and she attends weekly practices and plays many games and tournaments. We mostly capture special moments by taking photos or short videos with our phones, but it would be nice to be able to capture her games as teaching tools for her to view afterward, and for the memories. I think that this XbotGo Chameleon: Your Personal AI Sports Cameraman is the answer.

The XbotGo Chameleon features a sleek, sturdy, lightweight, and compact design. It weighs approximately 2.12 pounds. The exterior comes in three color options—Pearl Grey, Lava Graphite, and Lemon Green. On top, there is a phone clamp that is lined with protective rubber to prevent scratches. The clamp can accommodate phones with a diagonal of up to 180mm, a width of 55-90mm, and a thickness of 9.5mm. On the front, there is a wide-angle lens beneath status LEDs and the XbotGo logo. There is a USB-C port at the back for charging and connectivity. The base includes a universal tripod mount.

Performance

The XbotGo Chameleon is designed to utilize AI for performance and does a decent job as an AI-powered auto-tracking sports camera system. Setting up the device is as simple as installing the XbotGo app on your smartphone, registering an account, connecting to the phone and remote via the app, and you are ready to go. It is not mandatory to connect the remote, but it has its obvious benefits if the device is placed a distance away or high enough that you cannot reach the phone. XbotGo also included a nice tripod in the package that they sent me, and this is important to mention because it can extend quite high if there is a need to shoot video above people or objects in the way. I appreciate the features like the hands-free recording, easy sharing, live streaming, cloud storage, and no monthly subscription fees. In addition, the XbotGo produces nice quality video, and it tracks the action relatively well. I say relatively well, because there are times when it must catch up to the action, and in the case of the soccer games, the ball and action are out of the frame for a few seconds. I also must mention that I love that the device zooms in and out and tilts as needed, and given the price, this is a great solution for recording and/or broadcasting gameplay without breaking the bank. The option to choose from several pre-programmed sports makes it versatile, and the great battery life means that it can likely record games longer than I can watch at any one time. During my testing, I recorded a tournament that included 3 soccer games and was able to record all of them on one charge.
Overall, this is a great, affordable solution, and it certainly works for my use cases.

Final thoughts

The XbotGo Chameleon: Your Personal AI Sports Cameraman works perfectly for my need to record my daughter’s soccer games and tournaments. She uses the footage as a learning tool, and for me as a parent, it fulfills the need to preserve memories. It is not perfect, but it works well as long as it is properly positioned.
