Kuxiu K1 MagSafe power bank review

REVIEW – Summer is coming and with the return of my college student there will be a few things that happen:  1) my house will cease to be organized and 2) every single power bank I have will either be lost or out of power when I need it.  I’m not saying it has anything to do with my son coming home, but there is a correlation. I thought I’d review the Kuxiu K1 traveling wireless power bank so that I could have a power bank that is mine-all-mine!

Design and features

The Kuxiu K1 is meant to be a great travel companion because it slides closed and magnetically attaches to your phone to wirelessly charge it on-the-go.  It also slides into an “L” shape, which, with the kickstand can make it double as a phone stand.  When open, it says you can charge an Apple watch (my experience varied, however).  It is fairly compact and will charge phones quickly because it supports up to 15W of power,  with 5W for earphones or watches.

Performance

I was super excited for the Kuxiu K1 to arrive because I really wanted a charger/battery combo for travel.  I never like to be without a power bank when I go on an airplane because you never know what the power situation will be.  This seemed like it could have so many uses since it’s a phone stand, a wireless charger and it could also charge earbuds and watches.  Unfortunately, I wound up disappointed with the build quality.  I tried to open the kickstand right after it arrived, and it just came off in my hands.  So much for using it in an upright position!  A little super glue solved the problem, but I think the Kuxiu people might want to look at their production line.  That did not instill confidence!

I don’t have an iPhone but my Samsung Flip charged quickly using the Kuxiu K1.   I use a magnetic case so it stayed stuck to my phone even when rattling around in my handbag.  I don’t have an Apple watch, but I did try to use it with my Samsung and it was not compatible.  The charging spot on the corner of the Kuxiu K1 is magnetic as well and it was the opposite pole of my watch.  I was hoping that spot could also be used for charging my earbuds, but none of my wireless buds would charge there.  I had to use the phone charging area to charge those.

You can also charge using the USB-C port on the side of the Kuxiu K1 and I tried to charge my phone with my earbuds attached to the USB-C cable at the same time, but my phone was not keeping up with the amount of power it was using.   It appeared that the earbuds were charging though (although it’s hard to tell how well that was going since there’s just a glowing light on the earbuds to indicate something is happening).  I think my phone might have been draining fast than it could charge because  it wasn’t getting a steady stream of power.  The little lightning bolt on the battery kept blinking, and when I am plugged in or charging wirelessly it doesn’t do that.  The same thing happened when I attempted to charge my phone while the Kuxiu K1 was charging.

I had a friend with both an iPhone and an Apple Watch try the Kuxiu K1, and that proved very interesting.  The phone charged, but the Apple Watch didn’t.  Her watch was quite old, and she wasn’t sure which model she had, so it might have been a compatibility issue.  She said her watch charges magnetically on every other charger she’s had, however.   I might have gotten a defective item, and if so it’s good to know that there is a 365-day replacement guarantee that I might take advantage of!

While the Kuxiu K1 itself is charging, a round circle on the device is illuminated if it’s in the open “L” position  If it’s closed, the four indicator lights will pulse to tell you it’s charging.  The round circle pulses when the device is charging a phone or earbuds.

One feature that I think this battery could do without is the writing on the back of it.  Personally, I don’t need everyone to know the brand or capacity of the battery I’m using. I’d prefer a cleaner design or just leaving it blank.  It feels like needless advertising.

Final thoughts

This product didn’t really work.  The kickstand fell off and it wouldn’t charge the Apple watch.  Did I just get a bum item?  Maybe.  But if they’re sending out broken review items, that’s not a great sign.

• Build quality.
• Why wouldn’t my friend’s watch charge?
• Get rid of the advertising on the back.
