REVIEW – When offers come in to review mechanical keyboards, I am always interested, so when I received the offer to review the NuPhy Kick75 mechanical keyboard, I had to check it out and when I did, I knew I would want to review it based on the look and the fact that it offers something a little unique for keeb nerds – the ability to use either low profile or high profile switches and caps. Let’s take a closer look.

Design and features

nuphy kick75 2

The NuPhy Kick75 has a design inspired by LEGO colors and 8-bit gaming. The extra splash of color on the ESC, spacebar, ENTER, and analog knob give this keyboard a fun vibe.

Then, when you flip the keyboard over, there are more pops of color, along with a nod to 8-bit graphics.

nuphy kick75 5

The back edge has a switch to toggle between Windows and Mac modes and another switch for power and connectivity type: wired or wireless. There’s 2.4Ghz dongle has its own slot next to the USB-C charging/connection port.

Here’s a side view that shows the wedge shape and low profile of the Kick75 keyboard.

nuphy kick75 7

For a steeper angle, the fold-out feet raise the back of the keyboard even more.

nuphy kick75 8

I’m all about analog knobs and the knob on the NuPhy Kick75 is one of the more interesting looking ones I’ve seen in a long time. It can continuously rotate to adjust volume and will toggle mute/unmute when pressed.

nuphy kick75 9

There’s a small bit of plastic on the right side that has an unknown function.

nuphy kick75 10

It’s a magnetic cover over LEDs that show connectivity mode and power level status.

nuphy kick75 3

Nuphy sent me the low-profile version of the Kick75, but an interesting feature of this keyboard is the ability to convert it to high-profile switches and keycaps. However, the ease at which you can do this is a little misleading on the Kick75 info/order page. You can’t just buy the low-profile version and then, as soon as it arrives, swap out the switches and caps for high-profile versions of each. Nope, you have to order the conversion kit, which is an extra $19. But be aware that this kit just includes a new top cover, gaskets, and a screwdriver. It does not include a set of high-profile switches and keycaps. The conversion also requires you to take the keyboard apart, which might require more effort than most keyboard newbies will want to attempt.

See and hear it in action

I have no real complaints about typing on this keyboard. The layout is perfect for me and I had zero issues with it. My review sample came with brown nano switches and I found them to have a nice feel and slightly dampened sound due to the gasket structure.

Gotta love the translucent top cover with those cool rainbow backlight effects, right?

For those of you who like to customize keys, the NuphyIO software will allow for easily remapping keys to fit your preferred typing layout. You can also create macros for gaming and programming. This keyboard is also supposed to be compatible with QMK/VIA software, but I wasn’t able to get any of these to work with my review sample.

I use my keyboard hardwired to my MacBook, but for those who like to go wireless, the NuPhy Kick75 will work up to 360 hours on a charge with the backlight off and up to 90 hours with the lighting effects turned on.

Final thoughts

I normally don’t go for low profile keyboards because I prefer more travel when touch typing. However, I liked using the NuPhy Kick75 keyboard quite a bit. Maybe it’s the fun look/vibes because I know I’m more of a high-profile switch kinda girl, but this is the first low-profile keyboard I’ve enjoyed using in a long time.

What I like about the NuPhy Kick75 mechanical keyboard

  • Fun look
  • Conversion from low to high profile with optional kit
  • Affordable
  • The translucent case makes the backlight effects really shine

What needs to be improved?

  • Provide a size conversion kit option that includes the switches and caps
