Design and features

The Provitec MistFree Smart Humidifier presents with a contemporary but understated design that won’t look out of place anywhere in the house. The mist-free design doesn’t spit droplets of water so you can have it up on countertops or tables. I have a towel under it in these pics for testing, but never found drips or condensation anywhere around the unit.

The design is simple and efficient consisting of three main parts. You’ve got a 3 liter water chamber that is the base of the device. There’s a window on the front of the chamber so you can monitor your water level.

The filtration cylinder sits inside the unit. This uses a fabric-based filter that you can run through the washing machine when it gets dirty. The cap twists to remove and you slide the filter off the frame as shown on the pics below.

Finally we have the top piece that houses all the controls and mechanicals. Those icons are touch-sensitive for manual operation if you’re not using the app for control.

The Provirtec MistFree Smart Humidifier comes with a separate thermo-hygrometer to measure room temperature and humidity. While you can operate the humidifier without it, pairing the two improves the humidifier performance with more accurate room readings.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 7

The thermo-hygrometer requires 3 AA batteries (included with the package), and includes both a lanyard and an adhesive wall mount to place in the desired location in your room.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 10

I have it on a dresser across the room, about 10 feet from the position of the humidifier.

Before you fire up the humidifier, you’ll need to fill the tank and insert the filter. The top part of the unit then drops on to the lower half. You need to line up the top and bottom halves as shown below so that those contact prongs connect.

You’ll tap on each icon to activate the corresponding control, as follows:

  • The power icon turns the unit off/on (bottom icon).
  • The three-line icon sets the humidification level. There are three levels that get progressively more powerful (and louder).
  • The clock icon sets an auto shutoff from 1-12 hours after activating the unit.
  • The “A” icon is automatic mode, which automatically adjusts output to get to the target humidity range (default is 45-65%.
  • The light bulb icon cycles through ambient light colors, and includes an option for no ambient light.
  • The “UV” icon activates an internal UV light, designed to reduce mold/bacteria growth.
  • The moon icon activates night mode, which automatically turns off all external LED indicators and lights while reducing power to the lowest (and quietest) position.
  • The cut circle icon is a filter change indicator.

When activated the LED indicators cycle between power level and current humidity as shown below.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 28

As noted under the outline of the controls above, you can cycle through a variety of ambient color schemes that light up the LED indicators and the fan ring in the same colors. You can also choose to not light up the fan ring or, in bedtime mode, turn of all lights on the unit so that it doesn’t present a distraction while sleeping. Bedtime mode kicks in a few seconds after you activate the unit.

Each power setting step-up drives more humidity, but also get significantly noisier. This is a tradeoff that we’ll talk about in the performance section below.

Using the App

For brevity I am going to skip the demo of the pairing process here, but it’s a pretty straightforward affair. You’ll download the Prodigytec app, set up an account, then connect to both the humidifier and the thermo-hygrometer. You can add names and locations for the devices if you like, after which they will be present in your dashboard to manage their functions.

The thermo-hygrometer’s operation is simple. Select it from the app to see the current temperature and humidity in the room. It also has some history data you can review as shown below. You can set alerts if you’d like to notify you if the room temperature and humidity go beyond preset desired measurements (like below 60 degrees, above 70% humidity), but the real magic here is leveraging this real time data along with the humidifier.

Select your humidifier from the app and you’ll get complete control over all operations. The unit does not have to be powered on to take control, but it does need to be plugged in. This means you can activate it manually at any time and make adjustments based on your desired display and humidification settings.

The app dashboard is nicely organized for a quick overview of what is happening and easy access to the most important controls. You can see here that the room is reading as “dry” with a 35% humidity and I have it in sleep mode, so all the lights are off.

In the example below I dialed up the humidity level to 3 to fix that.

“Auto” mode takes all the guesswork out of the equation. You set the humidity range you want to hit, and the device makes adjustments to get (and keep) the levels where they need to be.

You can also use this control to adjust the color schemes and all the other details about display and operation. The “UV” function is one I keep on all the time. That maintains an internal UV light to reduce mold and bacteria buildup in the chamber.

There are preset “scenes” that basically use preset humidity levels for things like sleeping, rooms with plants, or infants rooms. I did not find these to be as useful since they all kind of use the same humidity ranges. What IS useful is that you can also preset schedules for operation if you would prefer the unit to come on/off automatically at specific times of the day or night. There is a set of scheduling tools available to make those selections (not shown).

Performance

One of my favorite things about the Provirtec MistFree Smart Humidifier is that it’s easy to maintain. The humidifiers I’ve had in the past seem to have all sorts of odd nooks and crannies that develop mold or buildup over time, requiring deep cleaning every two weeks or so to get them back into shape. The fill bucket on this unit has no such issues. It’s just a bucket. A quick wipe our and you’re on your way! The UV light feature also really works to tamp down the buildup of mold and stuff.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 21

I also really like the design of the filter. You can see some buildup here after several weeks of operation, but a quick run through the washing machine takes care of business. I don’t know how long the filter is designed to last, but it feels sturdy enough that it should be around for a long time.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 20

The bucket chamber design is also great for preventing leaks. Since the mechanicals are all in the top part of the unit there’s just nothing that could leak down there.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 22

The one downside to this is that you need to take the thing apart to refill, which means taking the top off and transporting the chamber and the filter to the faucet. You may want to find a pitcher you can use to refill the chamber to avoid this.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 23

The option to change color schemes is fine if you’re into that. You can swap the colors out to match the room scheme. I do find that, for a bedroom, the lighting is very bright . I appreciate the night-time no light mode.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 30

Automatic mode (shown below) works as designed, but there’s a catch: it will crank up the power to get the room to the desired humidity and can get loud.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 31

This isn’t a big deal during the day, but it will get quite noisy at night if it’s trying to cycle the room to the right humidity levels. Here we see the unit operating on level 3. While level one is 28 dB and very quiet for sleeping, level three gets very noisy, to the point of distraction.

Provirtec MistFreeSmartHumidifier 32

Which brings me to my one big issue with the Provirtec MistFree Smart Humidifier, and that is performance in larger rooms. Our bedroom is roughly 15′ by 15′. Maybe it’s a byproduct of the mist-free design, but I found in my testing that the humidifier struggled to hit the desired humidity levels (45-55%) at anything less than full power all the time. That meant that sleep mode (level 1) didn’t do much to get the humidity where we needed it. I was also refilling the water chamber every morning after a run of about 10 hours of operation at full blast.

When I tested the humidity levels against my other humidifier (a more traditional mist humidifier, but also smart with internal sensors), I found that the traditional unit did a better job of maintaining the humidity where it needed to be at a sleep-friedly sound level. I tested both units for a week using the Porvirtec thermo-hygrometer to do a true side-by-side comparison. Perhaps it is just that the room is really dry, but my wife and I both felt the difference when we swapped out the Provirtec and went back to the old unit.

That’s not to say that the Provirtec MistFree Smart Humidifier wouldn’t perform better in smaller areas, but it does seem challenged in larger spaces.

Final thoughts

There is a lot to like about the Provirtec MistFree Smart Humidifier. The smart functions are great, the app is excellent, and the unit is very easy to clean and maintain even using regular tap water. My only reservation is if you use it in a large space I feel that machine struggles to keep up unless you crank the power, which makes it a bit noiser than I like for sleeping. If you don’;t mind a bit of white noise you may be fine with it.

What I like about the Provirtec MistFree Smart Humidifier

  • Uses regular tap water
  • Very quiet and no lights in night time mode
  • Easy to clean with little to no mold/residue when using the UV light mode
  • Design makes for easy cleaning, minimizes risk of leaking
  • Simple app controls with excellent usability
  • Addition of the thermo-hygrometer is a nice addition for precise room monitoring

What needs to be improved?

  • The noise of the humidifier is noticeable at the high setting
  • Not suitable for whole-house humidification
  • Seems to go through water very quickly

This is just a swamp cooler with a wet cloth inside with a fan running on top of it, granted with much more technology than the old swamp coolers of yesteryear. Unfortunately, the degree to which the humidity can be raised will typically not be significant. Running at full bast, I only saw a 3% increase. And at full blast, the noise would make it generally no good doing certain work on the computer or a Zoom meeting, or if it was close to you while watching TV, etc.
