Miiasi Tripod 1

REVIEW – The world of small, portable tripods and selfie sticks has really exploded since the car-antenna-type telescoping rod took over the market in the late 1990s. Recent improvements in this area have included moving from chrome-covered rods to adding a tripod base. A recent release from Miiasi, their quaintly named 62″ Phone Tripod – MIIASI Extendable Tripod for iPhone and Selfie Stick Tripod with Remote, 360° Ball Head Upgraded Cell Phone Tripod for Video Recording, iPhone 14/13/12 Pro Max/Android, has incorporated these (and other) changes in a very cost-conscious model. I was sent one in the black colorway to test. It is also available in grey and white. Let’s give it a go.

What is it?

The Miiasi Tripod Selfie stick is a highly compact tripod that can be used as a selfie stick when collapsed yet easily unfolds to over 60”.

What’s in the box?

  • Tripod itself, with an incorporated ball-joint head
  • Mobile Phone bracket
  • Action camera bracket
  • Remote shutter release
  • Carrying bag

Miiasi Tripod 10

Design and features

Overall, the Miiasi Tripod Selfie stick is 13” long by 1.75” in diameter when fully collapsed. There is a ball head built into the top of the mast, with a nicely sized knob to tighten or release the ball. The screw post is the standard 1/4”-20 screw stub with a flat plate to hold whatever you’re attaching. Nothing other than the ball moves here, minimizing fiddliness. The stub is about .25” high, and every single camera/phone holder in my collection easily could fit onto it solidly enough to balance the device being held. (I started to question why other manufacturers have free-floating screws that have to be tightened with a folding wing nut and then tired of the mental gymnastics. This is solid and efficient. There are probably large format cameras/lenses that would benefit from a deeper connection, but you’re not going to be using them here. This is a selfie stick.)

If you simply pull this ball head up from the folded legs that form the handle, the rod extends up and is held in place via friction. There is a silver metal threaded ring that you can also tighten to increase the friction, but I never felt the camera was heavy enough to make the telescoping rods slip.

The included phone holder has a threaded rod that connects the top and bottom jaws. The jaws are padded a bit, and there is a lip on the edge of each one to hold the phone. The widest device it will hold is about 3.7” thick. There is also a threaded knob that loosens up the clamp to allow it to adjust. There are notches to allow it to stay at compass points (every 45º or so). The knobs are just under an inch in diameter and are easy to adjust. The action camera adapter its onto the ball head, and you can attach any action camera accessory.

No matter which phone you’re putting in the Miiasi Tripod Selfie stick’s holder, it’s not going to collapse under the weight. The tension is tight, but not enough to be difficult to deploy or retract. The legs are tightly held by friction as well as grippy pads on the bottom which prevent it from sliding on polished floors or a rough trail.

The simple drawstring pouch is 19” x 5”. It does what’s needed, without any bells and whistles. Well, the drawstring is connected at the base of the sack, so it kinda forms a sling. So, one bell, no whistle.

Setup

The only setup you’ll need is to pair the remote shutter to your phone.

Performance

This Miiasi phone tripod is amazing. If you’ve been on any social media in the last year or three, I’m sure you’ve seen many similar products being hyped for anywhere from $159 to $35. I have several that I have picked up over the years, mostly through doing reviews, but am always intrigued by the changes made through constant innovation. This little guy is made from black, slippery-coated aluminum on the inner column. The outer areas have a slightly rougher finish of the same metal. It has the fit and finish of anything in the lineup from the sites mentioned above, yet costs far less.

The Miiasi tripod/selfie stick is very light and easy to set up, steady when deployed even with a very tall setting (like face high when you’re standing), and, thanks to the adjustability of the ball head, stunningly easy to adjust, whether you’re shooting a landscape or an interview between yourself and another person. If you’re outdoors in a windy area, you may want to use a shorter extension, but by and large, this little guy will perform as well as most other tripods on the market of similar build size.

What I like about the Miiasi Tripod Selfie stick

  • Light, easy to unfold and refold
  • Steady at any height
  • The screw-type smartphone holder is far better than spring-loaded!!

What I’d change

  • The remote is very light-gauge plastic. I don’t think it will stand up long.
  • The carrying bag is very thin and cheaply made

Final thoughts

Everyone, it seems, has a vlog, a TikTok channel, or a fan page of some stripe! From online yoga classes to full large-scale woodworking projects to the ubiquitous cooking channels, everyone has something they want to share. Having a phone holder that you can depend on makes these type of situations much more manageable, whether you’re streaming to hundreds of fans or just FaceTiming with the grandparents. This little tripod is amazingly versatile for the small price you pay! If you haven’t gotten one yet, I suggest starting here. You’ll like it, and if your needs are beyond this, it’s a good starting place!

Price: Black colorway is currently $15.99. White or Grey are $23.79
