A black blade changes the Buck 120 General’s personality, but the steel underneath gives this October edition its real appeal. Buck’s October 2026 Buck of the Month pairs BOS heat-treated CruWear steel with Armor Black Cerakote, a gray-and-black SureTouch handle, and burgundy Micarta spacers. It’s a more distinctive take on a familiar hunting knife, priced at $225 with production limited to 750 pieces.

The appeal is straightforward if you already like the General: its recognizable clip-point profile stays, while the materials and finish give you something different from the standard 420HC model. Buck lists this USA-made edition as 0120BKSBOTM-B and includes a distressed black leather sheath.

A familiar shape with a darker finish

The General belongs to Buck’s long-running 100 Series, whose familiar fixed-blade lineup took shape in 1961. The 119 Special is part of that family, but the larger General gives buyers who prefer a longer blade another option.

For this October release, Buck lists a 7⅛-inch straight clip-point blade, 0.175-inch blade thickness, and 8.1-ounce weight. Those dimensions put it firmly in larger fixed-blade territory. If your cutting work favors a compact knife and precise control, the smaller 119 Special is another model to consider.

Visually, Armor Black Cerakote replaces the traditional polished appearance. The gray-and-black handle keeps the palette restrained, while the burgundy spacers add a small hit of color between the grip and aluminum fittings. It’s still recognizably a General, without looking like the regular production knife.

CruWear gives steel enthusiasts a reason to look closer

The steel choice is more interesting than the color change. Buck normally uses 420HC stainless steel for the traditional General; this edition switches to CruWear, a non-stainless tool steel known for its balance of toughness and wear resistance.

Those properties make CruWear an appealing option for a larger outdoor knife. Buck specifies its BOS heat treatment for the CruWear blade. The steel gives this edition a different material profile, though cutting performance still comes down to blade geometry, heat treatment, and the task at hand rather than the alloy name alone.

Maintenance is part of that choice. CruWear needs more attention to corrosion prevention than the standard General’s 420HC, so clean and dry the blade after use, including the exposed cutting edge. The Cerakote finish provides a protective barrier over much of the blade, but it can wear with regular cutting.

For buyers who enjoy trying different blade steels, that’s a useful trade-off to understand: CruWear brings a different balance of properties, with a little more care required afterward.

SureTouch updates the grip, not the silhouette

Buck uses gray-and-black SureTouch for the handle while retaining the General’s familiar guard-and-pommel arrangement. The textured surface gives buyers who prefer additional grip an alternative to the smoother handles on traditional versions.

An aluminum guard and pommel frame the handle, with burgundy Micarta spacers adding contrast at either end. The guard separates your hand from the blade, and the pommel preserves the outline that makes this knife easy to recognize. Buck’s changes are in the materials and appearance, rather than a wholesale redesign.

A matching sheath and a warranty with clear limits

The included distressed black leather sheath carries the darker styling beyond the blade. It gives this large fixed blade a dedicated carry option and keeps the package visually consistent.

Keep the leather sheath dry, and clean and dry the knife before long-term storage.

Buck’s Forever Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the knife, with repair or replacement at the company’s discretion. Normal wear, misuse, modifications, rust, and coating wear are excluded. The sheath has its own one-year warranty.

Who the $225 General makes sense for

This edition is aimed most clearly at buyers who already appreciate the General and want a different steel and finish without losing its familiar shape. Collectors get a defined 750-piece run, while outdoor users get a larger fixed blade with CruWear and a textured SureTouch handle. Limited production adds collectibility, not a guarantee of future resale value.

If easy maintenance or a smaller blade comes first, a standard stainless Buck hunting knife is another route. If the General’s size already suits you, this edition puts the interest where you’ll notice it: the blade material, grip, and darker finish.

The October 2026 Buck of the Month 120 General is listed at $225 on Buck Knives’ official website. The strongest reason to choose it is the combination of materials, not simply the number Buck made.
