Press the light button on BAIT’s new G-Shock and a cartoon banana appears behind the time. It’s a small detail that makes the “Yamagata’s Finest” DW5600 feel properly thought through: the yellow case gets your attention, then the display gives you another reason to look.

The collaboration wraps the familiar square digital watch in a ripe-banana theme, complete with brown speckles, a produce-sticker graphic and a darkened strap tip. At an announced US$170, its appeal is easy to pin down. You’re choosing the artwork, the matching packaging and a particularly cheerful take on an everyday watch.

A banana theme that goes all the way around

The yellow resin case has brown G-Shock lettering around a pale face. Most of the freckles sit on the strap, where the print continues across the keeper and toward the buckle. Even the darker tip follows the shape of a banana’s end. That gives the watch a more complete design than a character printed on the dial alone.

BAIT calls its mascot “Shawty with Freckles.” The blue-and-yellow sticker-style graphic on the band makes the food reference obvious, while the normal time display stays comparatively simple: dark digits on a light background.

Turn on the LED backlight and the mascot appears behind the digits. It’s the detail you’ll notice when checking the time in a dark room, although we haven’t tested the illuminated display’s readability in person.

There’s room for this kind of playfulness in the square G-Shock family. The thisisneverthat DW-5600TNT-7 takes the same recognizable shape in a frosted, translucent direction. BAIT’s yellow, blue and brown palette makes a much louder visual choice.

The useful part is still a compact digital watch

The resin watch weighs 53g and measures 48.9mm long, 42.8mm across and 13.4mm thick. That puts a relatively light digital watch on your wrist, with the time, day and date together on the main display.

It retains shock resistance, a 200-meter water-resistance rating, an alarm, a stopwatch and a countdown timer. Those are the functions you’ll use for a timed workout, a cooking reminder or a quick check of the date. The banana treatment doesn’t change what those tools do.

The yellow tin turns the specifications into a nutrition-label-style “G-SHOCK Facts” panel. It calls the watch one serving and labels the adjustable fit as the serving size. Alongside the joke, the panel carries the actual dimensions, weight, LED illumination and water-resistance rating.

The Yamagata name pays tribute to Casio’s manufacturing roots. Yamagata Casio is the company’s mother factory, supporting its watch production through development, precision manufacturing and assembly.

A collector’s package, with the release underway

The watch comes with a custom tin and box, and BAIT is extending the theme into a clothing collection with a cap, T-shirt, striped work shirt and canvas work jacket. The blue-and-yellow mascot ties the pieces together. Clothing prices haven’t been confirmed.

If you’re drawn to the banana design, the strap details, illuminated mascot and custom packaging give you plenty to enjoy. If your existing square G-Shock already covers your daily timing needs, the reason to add this one is the design itself.
