A trifold phone only makes sense if the extra screen earns the space, weight, and complexity it adds. Carrying one device that expands into something close to a small tablet sounds convenient, but the tradeoffs are substantial: two hinges, a large flexible display, extra thickness when folded, and a price that can exceed many laptops.

Huawei’s Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design tries to make those compromises easier to accept. It retains the 10.2-inch fully unfolded format while changing how the device works when closed, adding a dedicated 6.5-inch outer display and reinforcing the flexible screen, hinge, and chassis.
That shifts the second-generation model away from being merely a folding demonstration and toward something designed to function more naturally as both a phone and a large-screen work device.
The separate outer display matters
The original Mate XT used one flexible display across its different folded states. The Mate XT 2 instead adds a dedicated 6.5-inch outer screen while retaining a 10.2-inch flexible inner display when fully unfolded.
That separation solves a practical problem. For quick tasks such as messaging, navigation, payments, or checking notifications, you can use a conventional outer screen without involving the large flexible panel. When more space is useful, fully unfolding the device gives you the tablet-sized inner display.
Huawei describes the new folding arrangement as a wing-style design, with two folding sections that open outward from the center. The company also says the revised structure distributes weight more evenly when unfolded.
The Mate XT 2 still weighs about 299 grams and measures roughly 12.3mm thick when folded, so this is not a lightweight phone. In return, its weight gives you access to a 10.2-inch screen without requiring a second device.
Huawei is focusing on durability
Durability is one of the biggest concerns with any device containing multiple hinges and a large flexible display, and Huawei has made it a major part of the XT 2 update.
The company uses what it calls a reinforced folding architecture, with Kunlun glass on the outer display, a multi-layer inner-screen structure, and a second-generation hinge. Huawei claims the outer screen delivers up to 30 times greater drop resistance, while inner-screen impact resistance improves by 200% and hinge impact resistance by 90% compared with its internal reference designs.
Those figures come from Huawei’s controlled testing, so they should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than guarantees about how the phone will survive a specific fall.
A more concrete upgrade is the IP58 and IP59 dust and water-resistance rating. Foldables are harder to seal than conventional phones because of their hinges and moving displays, so formal environmental protection is a meaningful addition for a device intended to travel everywhere with you.
The privacy screen has a purpose
Huawei is also offering a Lingdun privacy-screen version of the Mate XT 2. It uses an independent dual-pixel design that narrows side visibility when privacy mode is enabled.
This feature makes more sense here than it would on a smaller phone. A 10.2-inch display used on a plane, train, or coffee-shop table exposes far more information to nearby people than a normal phone screen. Anyone reading documents, financial information, email, or internal company material could benefit from reducing off-angle visibility.
Huawei says the system maintains the display’s resolution while privacy mode is active. That remains a company claim, but Huawei has confirmed the hardware feature, and privacy mode can be activated from the outer screen or a programmable control.
Cameras are not secondary
The Mate XT 2 also gets a more capable camera system. Huawei equips it with a 50MP RYYB main camera using a 1/1.28-inch sensor and a continuous f/1.49 to f/4.0 variable aperture, a 40MP ultrawide camera, and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera.
The system also includes Huawei’s third-generation Red Maple color sensor. Huawei claims improved infrared-light filtering and a 95% increase in color reproduction compared with the Mate XTs.
Those figures are Huawei’s measurements, not independent camera-test results. Still, the specifications suggest Huawei is positioning the Mate XT 2 as a flagship camera phone rather than forcing buyers to choose between the folding design and serious photography hardware.
A new Kirin chip
Inside is Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro, which debuts in the Mate XT 2. Huawei calls it its most powerful Kirin processor to date and claims the phone delivers 42% higher overall performance than the Mate XTs, based on Huawei’s hardware, software, cloud, and system-level optimizations.
Huawei has also published much larger individual CPU improvement figures, but those remain manufacturer measurements until broader independent testing establishes how the chip performs under comparable workloads.
For buyers, the practical point is that Huawei is pairing the larger multitasking display with a new flagship processor rather than reusing the previous platform. That matters if the 10.2-inch screen is going to be used for split-screen apps, productivity work, media editing, or other heavier tasks.
Who should buy it?
In China, the Mate XT 2 starts at 19,999 yuan with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Huawei also offers 512GB and 1TB models, plus a 1TB privacy-screen version for 24,999 yuan and a 2TB stylus bundle for 29,999 yuan.
It is best suited to buyers who need a tablet-sized display several times a day but do not want to carry a separate phone and tablet. Frequent travelers, multitaskers, and mobile professionals may find the 299-gram weight and steep price easier to justify.
