PGYTech CameraStraps 4

REVIEW – I’ve been a “photography enthusiast” for about 15 years. I have spent more money on camera and related equipment than I’d like to acknowledge. I’ve gone from DSLR cameras to mirrorless, switching brands from Canon to Sony and also diving into the Fujifilm world. Regardless of all that….I still need a comfortable and safe way to carry my equipment when I’m out shooting. Was the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master the answer? Almost for me, but I can see it being the answer for many.

Design and features

Right now, I carry a Sony APS-C camera that I like to use with a 200-600 lens, and a Fujifilm X100VI point-and-shoot camera. Usually, I have the Sony setup along with a couple of other lenses and a tripod in a Tenba Axis camera backpack, and the Fuji in an Alpaka Go-Sling bag around my neck. Using the Fuji is easy, but to get to the Sony, I need to take off my backpack. Sometimes, I go without “the shot” because I don’t want to take the time and effort to remove my backpack and get situated.

Having the ability to carry my cameras “at the ready” was very appealing to me. I mostly shoot nature, landscapes, and wildlife, so being ready is crucial to getting some good shots.

I’ll break up my experiences into a couple of categories while using the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master and the Camera Strap Pro: comfort, convenience, confidence, and usability case.

Comfort

Both the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master and the Strap Pro are very well-padded. Neither dug into my shoulders nor created any pressure points like some other straps, most likely due to the width of the straps in addition to the padding.

Convenience

Like another brand that uses quick-release “pucks”, the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master and Strap Pro use their proprietary quick-mount beads.  The concept is similar, whereby the bead clicks into a buckle that can only be released after pushing a button. The fact that PGYTECH includes so many beads is fantastic – and in black (in addition to the more common orange)! Both the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master and the Strap Pro utilize dual beads when connecting to your camera. Because of this, it’s almost mandatory to use the included quick-release plate.

The quick-release plate is Arca-Swiss compliant and should fit on most tripods. On both cameras, I already have extension grips that are Arca-Swiss ready and don’t need the tripod plates, but I needed to use them to have both quick mount beads to connect to the buckle on the straps. I found that pressing the button to release the beads worked a lot better than the other brand of connecting pucks.

I did find a neat solution for my setup. I removed the lens foot from the 200-600 lens and attached the quick-release plate with beads. This allows me to keep the bottom of my Sony free of additional plates.

Another thing I did was attach the quick-release beads to be Alpaka sling and was able to have that across my chrest to hold my phone, filters, etc.

Adjusting the straps is straightforward, and there is a nifty lock built into each buckle. When unlocked, the camera can smoothly slide, but when locked, the camera won’t slide and removes some of the swaying.

I also like the built-in D-rings that I can attach my glasses or other lightweight small accessories to.

Confidence

The PGYTECH Camera Strap Master and the Strap Pro both can support 90 kg (almost 200 lbs)! at the connecting buckle! My shoulders would cave before the straps would! The cord that the quick-release beads are attached to has a three-layer visual wear indicator: black is good, when you see yellow, it’s a warning, and red means that it needs to be replaced right away.

The only connector that gave me some concern was the chest strap on the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master. It uses a compression clip to attach, but I found that it popped off frequently when I had the chest strap tight. Other than that, I didn’t feel any concerns about hanging my expensive gear from the buckles using the quick-release beads.

Use Case

The PGYTECH Camera Strap Master was something that I thought would work for me. I could have the Sony + long lens on one side, the Fuji in the middle, and use a lens pouch or something on the other side. It all worked in my head. But I should’ve thought a little more about that, because the Sony + 200-600 weighs about 2,600 g (5.73 lbs) and the Fuji only weighs about 500 g (or just over a pound). This severe imbalance made using the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master unusable this way.

I can see using the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master with the Sony and a smaller lens (maybe a macro or wide telephoto lens) on one side, then the Fuji on the other side. The weight is still a little lopsided, but it’s still usable. Then I would attach a pouch using the middle expansion straps. I connected a set of binoculars for testing, which worked equally well.

I would use the PGYTECH Camera Strap Pro with the Sony and long lens, with the Fuji in the sling around my chest.

Final thoughts

I have invested in the connectors made by another brand (rhymes with Speak Divine) for all my cameras, but I found their straps to be uncomfortable – either too wide or too narrow, without much padding. Since using the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master and Strap Pro, I’m a convert! I’ve already ordered (and received) the PGYTECH Camera Wrist Strap.

Both of the straps look great (especially in the Wilderness Green color) and feel comfortable to wear. I wore the PGYTECH Camera Strap Pro on a 5-mile hike without any issues. And just as important, the straps inspire confidence that my equipment isn’t going to fall by the audible ‘click’ and push button release.

If you need to carry around multiple cameras for shooting events, or hiking, or other purpose, I would recommend the PGYTECH Camera Straps!

What I like about the PGYTECH Camera Strap Master

  • Comfortable shoulder padding
  • Quick-release beads (in black, too)
  • Pricing is very affordable for what is included and how it performs

What needs to be improved?

  • Change out how the chest strap attaches to allow for more support without popping off
