The OttLite company is known for producing lamps and bulbs that provide natural lighting. Their POD Desk Lamp has a 13W OttLite HD bulb that will provide 10,000 hours of task lighting. It also has a charging stand for your phone, MP3 player, or other small device built in to the base. There’s even a wire management system in the base to control your charging cords. When you’re not using the lamp, it can collapse down into a pod shape for storage. The lamps are available in white or dark gray; both have a glossy, transluscent finish. The POD Desk Lamp is normally $69.99, but it’s only $39.99 during their back-to-school sale.

I took a look at this lamp’s web description more closely and noted the following:
1. Whilst it is currently on offer at $40 in its US site the lamp is retailing at GBP60 (= $93) in the UK. It’s easy to see who is subsidising the discount to US customers
2. The impression given is that it is a lamp that incorporates a recharging cradle. It isn’t. It is a lamp with a bit you can sit your phone on and it has a hole in the base you can thread the phone charger lead through. It’s not as smart as it looks and it is pretty pricey for what it is.
I did try to convey that it wasn’t a docking station by indicating that it worked for phones, mp3 players, and other small devices and that it had the cord management system.
It is a limited time reduced sale price. The normal is $69.99. And the GBP price shown does include VAT.
If you are familiar with OttLite devices, you know the lamps are always very expensive. This has nothing to do with the lamp fixture or its features and everything to do with the light bulb itself. OttLite is known for producing high-intensity natural-spectrum lights that allow crafters and artists to work under an artificial daylight – the high intensity to provide a well-lighted workspace and the artifical-daylight to reduce the unwanted effects of metamerism on their finished product.
