REVIEW – Vosteed is back with another knife. Shocking, I know. This time they’re following their excellent Raccoon pocket knife with a baby version, the Raccoon Cub. Get it? Baby version? Never mind. Anyway, I’m never not impressed with any of the Vosteed offerings I’ve been able to review. So when asked if I’d care to check it out, I of course said yes. I received the Chipmunk as a gift this past Christmas and loved it. It fit perfectly in the slot of my EDC wallet and I kept it on me all the time. Then I lost my wallet. Needless to say, I was a bit put out. After replacing my wallet, I immediately put the Raccoon Cub in its place. Could this little guy replace my beloved Chipmunk in form and function? Let’s find out.

What is it?

The Vosteed Raccoon Cub is a liner lock pocket knife with a 2.34″ blade made from 14C28N steel sporting G10 handles.

Design and features

The Vosteed Raccoon Cub knife has a 2.34″ drop point blade made from 14C28N stainless steel. This steel is not a super steel but is known for its edge retention, edge stability, and corrosion resistance. So not only does it have great attributes, it’s not going to cost you an arm and a leg to carry it.

The Raccoon Cub is a three-finger knife at best, but it does have a large finger choil allowing you to choke up on it and get a full four-finger grip. The blade also has two areas of jimping along the spine giving you better control when performing a push cut or getting in close and personal for finer work.

There are two ways to deploy the blade. You got the rear flipper or the thumb studs. In the case of the white model I’m reviewing, it has these good-looking green thumb studs to add a splash of color. The blade rides on a caged ceramic bearing so it deploys smoothly and quickly. And it’s a drop point. We can all agree that’s the best all-around blade shape, right?

The handle scales are made of G10 so you know they are tough and will stand up to a lot of abuse. There are notches on either side as well for the reversible, deep carry pocket clip. The texture is nice and grippy.

Even though this is a small knife, Vosteed has given the Raccon Cub a thicker profile than most knives I’ve seen at this size. I know there are other knife makers that do the same. I just wanted to point out that the Raccoon Cub isn’t so slim you lose it in your hand.

And, as it’s been my experience with all the Vosteed knives I’ve handled, the centering of the blade is spot on.

Performance

The performance of the Raccoon Cub is just what I’ve come to expect from Vosteed, excellent for a knife this size. The liner lock gets a good purchase and is rock solid. There’s no rocking or wiggle in the blade whatsoever.

It’s light and disappears in the pocket when using the clip. Like I’ve said, I carry mine in my EDC wallet which works great.

What I like about Vosteed Raccoon Cub pocket knife

  • Fits the hand well

What needs to be improved?

  • Nothing in my mind

Final thoughts

I was looking to find a suitable replacement for my Chipmunk knife and the Raccoon Cub fits the bill. I still miss the Chipmunk, but this little trash panda has softened the blow of my loss. I like to carry a smaller blade with me as EDC. Most of the time they do the job of the daily needs, don’t take up a lot of space in the pocket, and are lighter to boot. Do yourself a favor and go check out the Raccoon Cub from Vosteed. Hell, check out their other offerings if this one isn’t your cup of tea. They have a large selection of great knives to choose from.
