Zero Tolerance built its name on overbuilt folders, and the 0316 goes back to that formula. It’s a USA-made work knife with a 3.5-inch CPM Cru-Wear blade, black canvas Micarta scales, and a $280 street price against a $350 list. Dealers have stock right now. Kai USA’s own store doesn’t.
ZT positions the 0316 as an homage to the big, durable folders that built the brand, and the design follows through. The handle is thick and straight, the blade stock is substantial, and there’s no assisted opener or gadgetry in the way. It’s a manual flipper on ceramic ball bearings with a liner lock, the same straightforward setup the early ZT knives ran.
ZT is the hard-use line Kai USA launched in 2006, and the brand’s folders are built in the USA. The early knives were big, heavy, and unapologetic about it. The 0316 is cut from that same cloth.

A Cru-Wear blade with a black PVD finish

The blade is a modified clip point with a long swedge along the spine, ground high and flat, and finished in black PVD. Kai stamps the steel right on the tang, where it belongs: CPM Cru-Wear, made in the USA.
Cru-Wear is a Crucible tool steel, and the CPM powder-metallurgy version is the one to get. It’s an air-hardening steel from the D2 family tree, tuned for toughness over raw hardness. In practice, the edge holds up through hard cutting that chips harder, more brittle steels, and it still sharpens on ordinary stones. Its chromium sits at about 7.5 percent, below the line where a steel counts as stainless, and its carbide volume runs lower than the high-vanadium stainless steels ZT usually specs. That’s why it sharpens easier and takes the lateral stress of work cutting without chipping. It isn’t stainless, so the PVD coat is functional here and not just a color choice. The coating keeps the blade from spotting, and it blacks out the whole knife.
The flipper tab is the only opener, and it runs on Kai’s KVT pivot with ceramic ball bearings. A flipper is also the easiest opener to run with gloves on, and there are no thumb studs to snag on a pocket seam. The pivot itself takes a hex driver, so adjusting tension or breaking the knife down for cleaning doesn’t need a proprietary tool. There’s jimping on the blade spine where your thumb lands, and the flipper tab doubles as a guard once the blade’s open.
Canvas Micarta over steel liners

The scales are black canvas Micarta, 3D-contoured instead of flat-slabbed. Canvas Micarta is cloth set in resin, and the coarse weave grips well dry and better with wet or gloved hands. The contouring fills the palm, and the edges are rounded off so nothing bites during a long cut. ZT’s work knives usually run G-10 or titanium scales. Canvas Micarta feels warmer than both, and it doesn’t get slick the way a smooth metal handle does. Micarta also darkens with hand oils over time, so the handle picks up some character instead of just wearing down.
Under the scales sit substantial steel liners, Kai’s own description, with a steel liner lock. It’s a work build all the way through. There’s nothing delicate in the stack, and that’s the point of the knife.

Carry is a deep-carry pocket clip, reversible and tip-up, so the knife rides low and works for left-side carry. The clip side also shows the tang stamp and the serial number. A lanyard loop sits at the butt for anyone who runs a fob or a retention cord.
Zero Tolerance 0316 specs and price

The 0316 reached dealers this week in ZT’s latest round of releases. It lists at $350 and sells at $280. Blade HQ had it in stock at this morning’s check, and Kai USA direct lists the same $280 but shows the knife out of stock, so dealer stock is the supply for now. Inside ZT’s own line, the price sits between the 0350 at about $196 and the bigger 0308 at about $356.

ZT has spent the last few years chasing slimmer, lighter EDC designs, and plenty of those knives are good. The 0316 skips that trend and goes back to the overbuilt work folder, with a tougher tool steel than the stainless ZT usually runs. If your rotation is all slim titanium folders, this one won’t replace them. If you want one folder for the truck, the toolbox, and the weekend, this is that folder. At $280, in stock at dealers while Kai’s own store is sold out, it’s the kind of knife that built the brand’s following in the first place.
