A traditional pocket knife can be practical without looking plain. The Opinel No.08 Animalia keeps the familiar No.08 design but adds laser-engraved animal artwork to its oak handle. It’s a simple folding knife for someone who wants everyday utility with a more personal touch.

Beneath the engraving, the Animalia has an 8.5 cm stainless-steel blade, a nail nick for opening, and Opinel’s rotating Virobloc safety ring. Opinel USA lists it at 1.6 ounces and 7.59 inches long when open.

The engraving sets it apart

Opinel uses the No.08’s oak handle as a canvas rather than changing the knife’s basic design. Animalia engravings vary by market and availability, with designs depicting animals such as fish, bison, elk, deer, hare, and wild boar.

The artwork won’t change how the blade cuts, but it gives buyers a reason to choose this version over a plain-handled No.08. A fish design could suit an angler, for example, while a deer or elk might appeal to a hunter or wildlife enthusiast. That also makes the Animalia worth considering as an outdoor-themed gift.

The Hare version of the Opinel No.08 Animalia was listed at $30.00 on Amazon when checked. Pricing and available engravings may change.

Lightweight, traditional carry

Opinel’s international specifications list the Animalia’s blade at 8.5 cm (about 3.35 inches), while Opinel USA lists it at 3.28 inches. Opinel USA lists the open length at 7.59 inches and the weight at 1.6 ounces; Opinel’s international specifications put the oak handle length at 10.9 cm.

The low weight is appealing if you want a knife that’s easy to slip into a pocket or pack. There’s no pocket clip, though, and the nail nick requires a more deliberate opening motion than the thumb studs or flippers found on many modern EDC knives. Anyone who prioritizes quick, one-handed access should look elsewhere.

A stainless blade and manual lock

Opinel’s Animalia specifications identify the blade steel as Sandvik 12C27M stainless steel, while Opinel USA calls it modified Sandvik 12C27. Opinel lists its hardness at 55–57 HRC. The practical distinction for buyers is that this is a stainless-steel No.08, rather than one of the company’s carbon-steel models. It still needs sensible care: Opinel cautions that prolonged exposure to salt water, acids, or detergents can challenge the blade’s corrosion resistance.

The knife uses a Virobloc safety ring instead of a lock that engages automatically. After opening the blade, you rotate the collar to lock it in place. The ring can also secure the blade closed for transport. It’s a straightforward system, but it adds a step each time you open or put away the knife.

An oak handle with character

Opinel says the Animalia’s oak comes from France and has a visible, regular grain. That grain gives each engraved design a natural backdrop and helps distinguish the knife from synthetic-handled EDC folders.

The appeal is visual rather than technical. We haven’t tested this particular Animalia, so we can’t assess how its handle or engraving will age with extended pocket use, and the oak doesn’t make it inherently better than a knife with G10, aluminum, or another handle material. It gives the No.08 a different feel without making its operation more complicated.

Who is it for?

The Opinel No.08 Animalia suits someone who likes a lightweight, traditional folding knife but wants more character than the standard wooden model offers. Its wildlife-engraved handle also makes it a thoughtful gift for anglers, hunters, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

It’s less suitable if you want a pocket clip, one-handed opening, or a lock that engages automatically. Check the knife-possession and carry rules where you live before buying. The engraving won’t improve cutting performance, but it makes a familiar, uncomplicated knife feel more personal.
