That is the proposition behind the Ricoh GR IV 30th Anniversary Edition Kit. Ricoh is celebrating the GR1 film camera’s 30th anniversary with cosmetic changes and collectible accessories for the existing GR IV, not a new sensor, faster lens, or upgraded processor.
Only 6,000 kits will be available worldwide. The kit is scheduled to ship on October 21, 2026, and it carries a U.S. MSRP of $1,799.95. The reason to choose this version is not additional photographic performance, but owning a more distinctive GR IV that directly references the camera that started the series.
The GR1 Inspiration Is in the Details
Ricoh released the original GR1 film camera in October 1996, establishing the lineage that eventually developed into today’s digital GR cameras. The anniversary model brings several references to the original camera into the current GR IV.
The shutter release and rear buttons use a special dark-silver accent color inspired by the plated finish of the GR1’s controls. Ricoh also includes a special GN-3 (30th) ring cap with diamond-cut surfaces inspired by the area surrounding the GR1’s lens.
Ricoh says the ring cap was designed so its surfaces catch light when the camera is switched off and the lens is retracted, without creating unwanted reflections on a subject while shooting. A special 30th-anniversary graphic also appears when the camera powers down.
None of these changes affects image quality. Their purpose is to connect the current camera visually with the GR series’ origins.
The Kit Adds Collectible Extras
The anniversary treatment extends beyond the camera. Ricoh includes a genuine-leather GS-4 (30th) finger strap with “30th ANNIVERSARY” stamped on the reverse and a steel-gray GK-2 (30th) metal hot shoe cover carrying the anniversary logo on the front and RICOH GR branding on the back.
The kit also includes 16 pin badges: 14 representing GR models through the years, plus two kit-exclusive badges featuring the 30th Anniversary and GR logos. Those extras help clarify who Ricoh is targeting. A strap, decorative hot shoe cover, and set of badges will not make anyone a better photographer, but they may matter to someone who has followed the GR series for years.
Ricoh will also sell the anniversary finger strap, metal hot shoe covers, and the 14-model pin-badge set separately in limited quantities. The two logo badges remain exclusive to the kit.
Underneath, It’s a Standard GR IV
The Anniversary Edition uses the same hardware as the standard GR IV: a 25.74-megapixel APS-C sensor and fixed 18.3mm F2.8 lens, equivalent to 28mm on a full-frame camera. It adds five-axis stabilization rated for up to six stops at the center of the frame, approximately 53GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The 262-gram camera starts in about 0.6 seconds, while its DB-120 battery is rated for approximately 250 shots.
An APS-C sensor and 28mm-equivalent F2.8 lens in a pocketable body are what continue to set the GR series apart.
A Still-Photography-First Compact
The GR IV’s feature set continues to emphasize quick still photography. Its hybrid autofocus combines image-plane phase detection with contrast detection, while Full Press Snap can take a photograph at a preset Snap focus distance with a full press of the shutter button or a touch of the LCD.
There is also in-camera RAW development, a built-in two-stop ND filter, and an ISO range from 100 to 204,800. That maximum ISO figure should be treated as a specification rather than evidence of usable image quality at the extreme end of the range. Ricoh also makes its own claims about image quality, autofocus improvements, and responsiveness; those claims are not substitutes for independent testing or hands-on evaluation.
Video capabilities further show where Ricoh’s priorities lie. The GR IV records Full HD video at 1920 × 1080 at 60p, 30p, or 24p, rather than offering 4K recording. Buyers looking for a compact hybrid camera with more ambitious video features have reasons to look elsewhere.
Who Should Buy the 30th Anniversary Edition?
The question is not whether you want a GR IV, but whether you want this GR IV.
For street photography, travel, and everyday shooting, the standard GR IV delivers the same core camera specifications and performance. The Anniversary Edition adds no image-quality advantage.
It is instead for longtime GR users and collectors who value the connection to the original GR1. Its special controls, ring cap, power-off graphic, leather strap, hot shoe cover, and pin set are the appeal, while the 6,000-unit production run adds collectibility.
