The Citizen Imperial Battle AW1857-57W does not choose subtlety. The Death Star dominates the dial. TIE fighters swarm around it. The Galactic Empire crest sits at 12 o’clock. Even the case shape is intended to reference a TIE fighter.
Underneath all that Imperial hardware, though, is a surprisingly conventional Citizen: 42mm stainless-steel case, sapphire crystal, 100-meter water resistance, date display, and Eco-Drive movement.
At a reported US launch price of $525, that raises a more useful question than whether you like Star Wars: can a heavily themed watch still work as an everyday watch?
The Death Star isn’t hiding
Citizen does not make you hunt for the Star Wars connection.
The red-and-black metal dial uses original embossed artwork showing the Death Star set against a swarm of TIE fighters, while the Galactic Empire crest sits at 12 o’clock. Citizen repeats the Empire emblem on the case back.
Even the 42mm stainless-steel case with gray ion-plated styling gets involved. Citizen says its angular hexagonal shape echoes the panels of a TIE fighter. Whether you immediately see that reference is subjective, but the point is clear: this is not a standard Citizen watch with a small Star Wars logo added later.
The theme drives the design. That is either exactly what you want or the main reason to look elsewhere.
A 42mm case gives the artwork room
At 42mm, the Imperial Battle is not a small watch. That gives Citizen enough dial space for the Death Star, TIE fighters, Empire crest, hour markers, hands, and date window.
It does not tell us whether the watch will fit every wrist comfortably. Case diameter is only one part of fit, and Citizen’s product listing does not provide every dimension needed to predict how it will wear.
The case and bracelet are stainless steel, with the bracelet secured by a fold-over clasp with push buttons. Eco-Drive converts light into electrical energy rather than relying on the normal replacement cycle of a conventional disposable watch battery. Citizen says the system can be powered by any light source, and the technology is well established across the brand’s lineup.
The practical benefit is simple: you do not need to periodically open the watch just to install another disposable battery. That does not mean the watch is maintenance-free forever, and Citizen’s AW1857-57W page does not provide a model-specific full-charge runtime.
The defensible conclusion is straightforward: this is a light-powered quartz watch designed to reduce one routine maintenance job.
100-meter water resistance helps it escape the shelf
A Star Wars watch this visually elaborate could easily have been built mainly as a collectible. Its specifications suggest Citizen expects people to wear it.
The Imperial Battle carries a WR100/10-bar/333-foot water-resistance rating. Citizen categorizes that rating for swimming and marine sports.
That does not make the AW1857-57W a professional dive watch. It does give the watch more everyday water capability than you might expect from something that looks like Star Wars memorabilia.
Combine that rating with stainless-steel construction and a sapphire crystal, and there is a practical watch underneath the Death Star. That distinction matters at $525.
You’re paying for the Star Wars design too
There is no point pretending the price is purely about specifications.
The J810 is a three-hand Eco-Drive movement with a date display. There is no chronograph, mechanical movement, GMT complication, GPS synchronization, Bluetooth connection, smartwatch functionality, or animated lightsaber effect.
What you are paying for includes the embossed Death Star artwork, TIE fighter theme, Galactic Empire branding, unusual case treatment, and official Star Wars collaboration.
