REVIEW – As I work on my retirement transition plan, both my wife and I have a sense of urgency to work on some small business ventures. This year, my wife launched her business, and by its nature, there is a need to engrave multiple items. I have been looking for an engraver that can not only do a great job but is also enclosed and can be used indoors, minus the fumes. Enter the ORTUR R2 Smart Laser Engraver.

The Ortur R2 features a sleek, fully enclosed desktop design that blends durability and safety. The enclosure measures approximately 558 × 493 × 305 mm and weighs approximately 30 pounds. The manufacturer indicates that the enclosure is shielded by a protective laser filter window that allows users to safely view engraving operations without needing safety glasses. There is a built-in flip-up HD touchscreen on the front panel that serves both as the control interface and the display. On the inside, there is a smart HD full-frame camera that enables live workspace previews and provides the ability to drag and drop design placement. Airflow management is facilitated via a 40L air assist pump, an emergency stop button, and a safety lock system for secure operation.

The ORTUR R2 Smart Laser Engraver is an attractive, enclosed desktop machine that is designed to accommodate beginners as well as serious DIYers.

The R2 offers 10 W or 20 W diode modules plus an optional 1.3 W infrared module, giving it enough power for cutting thin pieces of wood and acrylic while also enabling detailed marking on metals and jewelry with the IR head. According to the specifications, it features a maximum rated speed of up to 20,000 mm/min and 0.01 mm positioning accuracy, which makes it capable of producing very fine detail for all types of designs, including logos, text, photos, etc. The 300 × 210 mm working area is small but big enough to accommodate most small products, signs, tags, and craft items.

One of the features that I like and enjoy the most is that the R2 is fully enclosed, with a filtered viewing window, active exhaust, and odor isolation. Unlike the previous engravers I have tested. This device does not fill the room with unbearable odors and smoke. For safety, the machine includes multi-point flame detection, tilt and vibration monitoring, emergency stop, and exposure-duration monitoring. However, there are many scenarios when I needed to disable the flame detection for my job to be successful. The flip-up HD touchscreen on the front makes it easy to use and to control jobs and monitor the status.

The R2 Engraver supports USB, Wi‑Fi, micro SD card, and app-based control. I have mainly used the app and Lightburn for testing. The Lightburn software comes with a free 30-day trial and costs $200 for a lifetime subscription. Since using Lightburn requires your PC to be directly connected to the R2 via USB, the Inspiraesth/Ortur app might be preferable for an untethered, wireless solution. The app is easy to use, but I found that frequent unrelated alerts on my phone from things like my security system created an issue after a while. I do like the camera-based visual positioning on top, which helped me to accurately place jobs on materials.

Overall, I was able to achieve clean, dark engravings on wood, leather, and coated metals, with the 20 W module at slower speeds and higher power. The 1.3 W IR module works well for acrylic and the stainless steel that I tested, though it works more slowly and requires disabling flame detection. I stick to using Lightburn and the direct connection because of the previously mentioned Wi‑Fi connectivity quirks. I love the air vacuum pump and exhaust hose that is mandatory when engraving things like wood indoors.

Final thoughts

The ORTUR R2 Smart Laser Engraver is intelligently designed and incorporates precision, speed, and modern safety features into one compact platform. The intuitive touchscreen interface and smart connectivity options make it versatile and easily accessible. The engraving results are impressively detailed, with consistent accuracy. While there is a need to tweak settings for the best results, with a bit of patience, this device works well for both personal and small business use.
