REVIEW – I first learned about Ultimea when I reviewed their Nova S80 Dolby Atmos soundbar, which I found to be a solid product at a reasonable price. Therefore, when I had the opportunity to review their new flagship soundbar, the Skywave X70, I couldn’t resist. The X70 appeared to be a significant upgrade from the Nova S80, and who doesn’t enjoy an upgrade?

Design and feature

The first thing I noticed about the Skywave X70 is its weight. The total weight of the box is 61lbs. Which is pretty hefty for a soundbar.

The packaging for the soundbar is very nice. It definitely felt as though I was unboxing something special.

While unboxing, I quickly found out why the box was so heavy. It’s the soundbar; this thing is an absolute beast. Aside from its weight, the subwoofer is an absolute stunner, featuring a black woodgrain finish, gold accents, and a unique faceplate design.

The soundbar and surround speakers also feature a premium look with rich gold accents around the up-firing speakers.

The soundbar has a three-piece modular design that fits together seamlessly. When together, the length of the SB is 43.3 “, which fits perfectly on my TV stand. Ultimea also provides mounting brackets if you choose to mount it on a wall.

For connections, the X70 features an HDMI to TV (eARC) port, an HDMI input port, an optical port, a USB port, and a DC input port.

The SB features an LED readout on its front panel, displaying volume level, input, EQ settings, and levels for bass and surround speakers. The readout can be dimmed or completely turned off using the Ultimea app.

The Skywave X70 is a 7.1.4 channel soundbar, which means it has 11 total speakers (drivers) and a subwoofer. The main unit features seven speakers: two front, two up-firing, one center, and two side-firing.

Each rear surround speaker features both side-firing and up-firing drivers, dispersing sound in multiple directions to create an immersive, all-around soundstage. The speakers are powered by power adapters, so ensure you have outlets where you want to place them. They also come with brackets and mounting hardware.

The X70 is a truly wireless system. It’s built on dual 5GHz channels and enhanced by advanced RF and networking protocols, which dramatically reduce interference and eliminate dropouts.

4K HDR Passthrough brings the highest standard of home cinema reproduction.

Here are some additional standout Technical features of the Skywave X70.

NEURACORE Neural-Level Processing for Multi-Channel Sound: With its triple-core DSP and dual-core MCU, NEURACORE delivers precision sound at 24-bit/192kHz with ultra-low distortion and 2,000 MIPS of processing power — supporting up to 17 channels of immersive surround sound with incredible detail and height precision.

Industry‑Leading GaN Amplification: Surpassing traditional silicon designs, the GaN amplifier delivers ultra‑efficient, low‑heat, and precision‑tuned performance, bringing crisp details, expansive dynamics, and every musical nuance to life.

Gravus Ultra‑Linear Bass Technology: Featuring an oversized waveguide cone and a precision‑tuned 40L acoustic chamber, Gravus delivers sub‑bass that plunges to 20Hz. Even at high volumes, its ultra-linear excursion ensures distortion-free, clean, and full-bodied low end, powerful yet precise, without boominess or fatigue. With flexible bass adjustment, enjoy deep, enveloping lows that stay smooth and comfortable even at lower volumes.

There are two ways to control the X70. You can use the included remote control or the Ultimea app.

The upgraded remote control features a sleek, modern button layout for effortless operation. Beyond the typical buttons for volume, power, Bluetooth, and input, there are specific buttons for equalization presets and controls for bass, up-firing, and surround speaker levels.

The X70 features six default EQ settings: Standard, Cinema, Music, Voice, Game, and Night.

There’s also a button on the remote to enable the Xupmix function. With the new Xupmix function, even non‑Dolby Atmos content instantly transforms into immersive surround sound with the press of a button. This works exceptionally well with broadcast content that is typically in Dolby Surround, providing a broader and more immersive soundstage. However, if you’re listening to material that already features a native Dolby Atmos soundtrack, the Xupmix option has no effect.

The app allows a more in-depth user experience. It gives you the ability to fine‑tune your audio with a 10‑band EQ and explore 121 preset sound profiles. You can also adjust the sound effects for the 6 default EQ settings. For me, the app is my go-to for controlling the X70. It does everything the physical remote can do, but it offers me a better overall experience.

Setup

Another nice feature of this soundbar is its straightforward setup. All you have to do is connect an HDMI cable to the eARC port on the soundbar, and then connect the other end to the eARC port on your TV. That’s it. The subwoofer and the surround speakers all connect automatically. I just plugged in the subwoofer and the surround speakers, powered up the soundbar, and it all connected automatically.

Performance

The first thing I noticed when I fired up the X70 was just how loud it was. I definitely had to turn it down a few notches to get it to a level I was comfortable with. Listening to content from my DirecTV box, which features Dolby 5.1 sound, sounded very good. The vocals were nice and clear, and I could definitely hear the individual, unique sounds coming from the surround speakers. I’m a big sports fan, and watching sporting events sounded especially good on the X70. The play-by-play vocals were clear and audible, and the crowd noise coming from the surround speakers was immersive. There were even times I could pick out individual voices in the crowd coming from the surround speakers.

Where the Skywave X70 really shines is with source material that is in Dolby Atmos. That’s because the X70 knows precisely where to send all of those unique sounds.

To test the X70’s Dolby Atmos capabilities, I watched scenes from a couple of different movies. The first was Godzilla King of the Monsters. This was a great choice because of all the insane Kaiju (monster) fight sequences. The X70’s immersive soundstage literally blew me away. The sounds were moving all around, and at times, above me, it was almost too much, but in a good way. And when Godzilla let out his infamous roar, it sent chills down my spine. The 10″ subwoofer rattled the room, but it was controlled and not over the top. When it needed to punch you in the face, it did. Still, the sub also did an exceptional job of reproducing low-end frequencies, such as the sound of distant explosions and thunder, that I could both hear and feel.

The other movie was Mad Max: Fury Road, specifically the desert chase scene that ends inside a massive sand storm. The scene is total sound chaos, with loud vehicles, explosions, wind, sand, and thunder.  With the X70, I could hear and feel it all. Especially inside the sand storm, I could almost feel the sand whipping around me, and the explosions and thunder rattled the room. It was cinematic sound perfection! Or at least as close as you can get to it using a soundbar.

You can listen to music through the X70 using the Bluetooth 5.4 wireless connection. Although I don’t often use my soundbars for music, the sound quality was exceptional, especially when streaming Dolby Atmos songs from Apple Music.

If the sounds become too loud at any point, you can access the app, where you have the option to either boost or reduce both the subwoofer and the surround speakers, based on your personal preference and the sound quality that suits your room.

Overall, was I impressed by the Skywave X70? You bet I was. It sounds good, and it is powerful. I was highly impressed by the sound quality of the surround sound speakers. And equally impressed by the soundbar’s ability to produce and send so many unique signals to those surround speakers. The Dolby Atmos reproduction is among the best I’ve personally heard from a soundbar.

Let’s talk about that subwoofer for a second. It is a banger! Not only does it have the ability to rattle a room, but it also excels at reproducing low-end frequencies.
