REVIEW – Summer and all of its gloriously hot weather is here, and that means it’s time to get out of the house and get to grilling.  A gas grill is the perfect way to quickly grill hot dogs, hamburgers, kabobs, or whatever you fancy.  In this review, I’ll be putting the Mesa 415Bz from Monument Grills through its paces to see if it can handle the heat.

What is it?

The Monument Grills 415BZ is cart-style gas grill with four stainless steel burners, one sear burner, and a side burner.  It’s the latest grill in Monument Grills’ Mesa line that is “designed for those who want a grill that reflects their style and values.”

What’s included?

The only thing included is the gas grill.  The website says that it comes with a free cover, but mine did not include one.  I purchased the propane tank from my local big box store for $68.

Design and features

The 415BZ has a very typical design for a consumer gas grill.  The main grilling area is covered by a large lid and contains four burners covered by grates and a warming rack.  The right shelf has a side burner and the left shelf has room for a plate or the tongs.  The propane tank is stored underneath, hidden away behind door doors.  Although the basic design of gas grills hasn’t changed much in the last 20 years, the 415BZ has a number of enhanced features that make grilling even more convenient, including a (mostly) stainless steel body, a large cooking surface, a sear burner, a side burner, and an electronic ignition.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

It took me two hours to assemble the grill.  Most of the steps can be done by one person, but adding the body to the frame is easiest done with two.  I needed a couple of Phillips screwdrivers and a shears, which are not included.  As a whole, the assembly instructions are ok.  There are lots of clear pictures, but the explanation is broken in places and do not explain every step that has to be completed.  There was one step where it had a major omission, and I had to redo some steps to fix the problem.  Despite this, I was able to get everything put together.

The body of the grill is made from a coated stainless steel, and the various pieces are held together with screws.

The main cabinet is formed from a base piece with walls and a back.

Once I added the grill body on top, it began to look like a grill.

There are a set of wires and cables that provide power and gas to the side burner.  Monument Grills did not do any cable management, so they were left flopping around.  I was scared that they would catch on something, so I hung them together with a wire.

This is the point at which I realized there was a glaring omission in the assembly instructions.  This large silver conduit runs the gas from the propane tank to the burners.  It should have run over this silver bar instead of in front of it, but the manual doesn’t mention this important detail.  I had to remove the body, push it over the bar, and then reattach.

At this point, the grill was almost done.  Both shelves were on, the side burner was attached, and there were doors on front to hide the propane tank.

The entire grease tray slides under the burners from the back side of the grill, and the grease pan is held in place by a bracket.  I like this design, as it’s very easy to get to the pan for cleaning.  The tray itself is not screwed in place, so it will be equally easy to slide the entire thing out for cleaning.

The doors open and close easy.  The next step was to move the grill from the back porch, where I had assembled it, down to the patio in my yard.  The shelves in this Mesa are not very strong.  They are fine for a plate of burgers or a pan with mac-n-cheese, but they are not designed to be used to lift the grill and carry it up or down stairs.  As long as I keep the grill on my patio or just wheel it in and out of the garage, this won’t matter.

The grill has a bar that hooks into the base.  I had to lay it flat and then set the tank into the hole in the base.  I then raised the bar and slipped it over and over the tank.  This does a decent job holding it in place.

I screwed the regulator into the tank, only tightening it by hand.  The 415BZ does not come with a fuel level gauge, and that’s the biggest feature that I would change about this gadget.  I’ve had too many occasions where I was grilling dinner for company only to have the gas run out half way through.

At this point, I was ready to grill, so I opened the tank valve, turned one of the burner control knobs to on, then pressed the ignition switch.  Nothing.  I then began trying to troubleshoot by opening the valve in the morning, trying different burners, pressing the ignition button harder, and so on.  Still nothing. Between each test, I was careful to close the value while keeping the lid open to give the gas time to escape.  I read back through the manual, looking for what I might have missed.  Even more nothing.

In the end, I found the problem by accident.  While looking at the ignition button, I realized that it said something about a battery.  I unscrewed it and found to my astonishment that an AA battery is supposed to go back inside.  I read back through the manual twice, but I could never find anything that told me about this rather critical step.  Once I popped one in, everything worked as expected.

Performance

My first test was to grill frozen hamburger patties from the Butcher Box.  These are our go-to when we want quick and easy burgers.  I set the temp to about 40%, gave them time to grill, and only flipped them once.

The result was a delicious double cheeseburger that I ate with homegrown lettuce and a brioche bun.  Yum!  The one thing I could have done better was to melt that Irish cheddar cheese while the burgers were still on the grill.

My second test was to grill BBQ chicken wings.  After washing the grates, I started the 415BZ and set it to medium.  Once it had heated up, I used tongs to put the wings on and coated them with BBQ sauce.  I kept rotating the wings and putting on more sauce.  I found that the warming rack was in my way, so I took it off and put it below with the gas tank.

The result was an amazingly good plate of wings.  They were a bit more charred than I wanted, so I probably should have lowered the heat a bit.  Even so, my wife and I devoured them all.

My third test was a three-part meal.  I grilled chicken breasts steeped in an Italian marinade and zucchini wedges sprinkled with olive oil.  All grills have hot spots, and I’m beginning to find them on the 415BZ.  For the right two burners, the back half of the grill is considerably hotter than the front half.  To grill things evenly, I simply have to keep rotating my food from back to front.

On the side burner, I boiled carrots until they were tender then added some butter and brown sugar.  The burner seems to run hot to me; that is, the lowest setting is about the same as medium on an oven.  This worked great for boiling the carrots, but it’s too hot for just keeping them warm.

The result was a delicious meal.  The chicken was tender, juicy, and flavorful.  I think I overdid the wedges, as they were too soft for me, but the charring added a nice taste.  The carrots were perfect, succulent and sweet.  It’s nice to know that I can make an entire meal on this grill on those days when it’s really hot, and we don’t want to turn on the oven inside the house.

My final test was New York strip steaks.  I set the right two burners to max and turned on the sear burner.  That got hot in a hurry!  I was able to sear each side of these steaks in just over one minute.  I then turned off the sear burner, turned the others way down, and let them cook slowly until they were around 150 degrees inside.

The result was amazingly delicious steaks!  My wife added a side salad, and we feasted for dinner that night.  This grill did a fine job with the steaks.

Features

Here are my thoughts on some of the features of the Monument Grills Mesa 415BZ:

  • The electronic ignition works perfectly.  I love that its batteries are held in place by magnets, as this makes them easy to get to and replace.
  • The Monument Grills website says that the grill finish for 415BZ is stainless steel.  While some parts of this grill are stainless, it certainly is not all stainless steel.  The back of the grill body, which is black in color, began rusting in multiple places within two weeks.  I can tell that rust is going to be an issue.
  • The stainless steel surfaces leave fingerprints everywhere, just like on the appliances inside, but this is an outdoor grill, so I don’t really care.
  • I really like having the pane of glass on the lid.  Being able to glance inside to see how things are doing is so convenient.

  • The temperature gauge on the lid does its job.
  • The four wheels have locks, which will be handy for anyone whose driveway has a bit of a slope.

  • The grates are solid and heavy.  So far, they have cleaned up fairly easily without any sign of rusting.
