NEWS – Apple recently released their Vision Pro, a fancy headset computer. One of the biggest concerns that I have about this device is that it will tend to further isolate people from each other. I put the headset on, work for a few hours, and completely ignore everyone around me. In a recent tech demo at the Mobile World Congress, Lenovo seems to be going the exact opposite direction. It’s a concept, not a released product, but the idea is that the 17-inch display for the laptop is completely transparent. The user can look through the display and see what’s behind it, and other people can look through the display and see the display itself and the user.
It looks insanely sick, something totally futuristic. I am unsure, however, what value this adds to my computing experience. It kills all privacy, so perhaps it’s useful in an environment where there should not be privacy, like a classroom where the teacher needs to know that students are programming rather than goofing off on YouTube. For me, I think it simply adds more distraction, something I need less of not more of. I have no idea if this concept will make it to our future, but if it does, it will probably be both cool and expensive.
