It would be truly satisfying if this were powered by the heat of the coffee, but I suspect it probably needs a battery.
That would be wonderful, but I think you’re correct (that it needs a battery) – I tried to find out about what kind of battery it needs, but was unsuccessful.
It looks like it takes one or two standard coin batteries if you look at the pictures here (my eyes can’t read the number on the battery, but maybe someone else can):
