tivo premiere

The holiday season is a lot of fun, isn’t it? There’s the bustle of shopping to find just the right gifts for everyone on your list. The excitement of parties and celebrations. The fun of decorating your house and making cookies. However, if you’re like me, you have some TV shows that you love and watch religiously. All of this seasonal fun makes it difficult to catch all my regular shows and the holiday movies and specials, too. I don’t even own a VCR anymore, so I couldn’t record my shows even if I wanted to mess with the tapes. Enter Tivo to save the day!

You’re familiar with TiVo by now, aren’t you? A TiVo box – with your broadband connection and a CableCARD from your provider – replaces your current set-top box and lets you watch and record all your programs. TiVo does it better than your old cable DVR could, because the TiVo interface is so elegant and easy to use. And it offers services your cable box can’t.

With the new TiVo Premiere box, you’ll be able to watch and record your normal cable programming and even over-the-air television signals with a digital antenna. You’ll also have a world of internet programming at your fingertips. The TiVo Premiere gives you access to Netflix Instant downloads, Amazon on Demand, and Blockbuster on Demand. You can even watch videos from sites like YouTube, and the box can host music and stream it from your PC or Mac or from sites like Pandora. And the Premiere lets you enjoy your programming in full HD – even the interface screens are in HD. And the Premiere has room to record up to 45 hours of full HD programming!

TiVo is making giving a gift to yourself or a loved one very easy this year. Stop by Best Buy to pick up a TiVo Premiere box at the special holiday pricing of only $99 when you agree to a one-year service plan – the monthly rate is only $19.99 a month during the subscription period. This is the best, most affordable pricing TiVo has ever offered. And unlike renting a DVR from the cable company, you’ll actually own the TiVo Premiere at the end of the year. For about $350, you can give your friend, family, or yourself a year of programming that you can watch when it fits into your schedule. And the fun doesn’t stop at the year’s end – you can continue the TiVo service on a month-to-month basis.

Best of all, TiVo has very generously given The Gadgeteer a TiVo Premiere box and a one-year subscription to the TiVo service to be awarded to one lucky Gadgeteer reader. Winning is easy. All you have to do is post a comment to this article between now and 12/23/10 11:59pm EST. Be sure to read the sweepstakes rules.

1/6/11 – Update: The winner is comment #35 from Brett.

  1. Gadgeteer Comment Policy - Please read before commenting
  2. As “staff”, don’t count me in! (Let one of our readers have fun)

But I just had to mention that I just got one of these to replace my older Tivo HD… and I’ve noticed that Tivo-to-Mac video transfers are now 2x as fast. I love it!

  3. This is an Awesome contest. Leave it to the-Gadgeteer to make one of the most awesome tech-blogs even better. Fingers crossed!

  4. Andy, did you have a lifetime membership on your TiVo HD? Were you able to transfer it to your Premiere?

Where do I learn more about “TiVo-to-Mac”? Do you use Roxio Toast Titanium for that?

  5. I have an 8-yr old Tivo Series 2 DVR that I love. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do HD. I’m curious– especially since I’ve been reading conflicting information– but does the new Tivo allow you to view On Demand Programming via Comcast? And if so, is it in conjunction with a cable box or can I view such programming with a Tivo and a cable card inserted into the DVR. Thanks for the cool offer, too.

  6. I have TIVO HD and love it. Much better than the sat dish DVR. More intuitive, more responsive. Overall it is the best

  7. Oh wow. This would be great to win. We don’t have any tv service at the moment. We have a tv, but we just watch DVDs or hook up our laptop to it. I’d love to win.

  8. I love Tivo and had the original series 1. I’m currently suffering with the comcast DVR. No one should have to endure such torture.

  9. Considering what my cable provider wants for their DVR a month I’d love a TiVo so I could actually watch things that I don’t get to now. I miss entertainment!

  10. @Dennis T: I don’t believe you can view OnDemand shows from any provider with the Tivo. We have an HD model and it used the cable card to receive & decode channels, but a separate box from the cable company is required to watch OnDemand programming. I personally don’t miss that aspect, our Tivo is always crammed with stuff to watch!

  11. I would love to have this new TiVo Premiere for Christmas. My original TiVo Series 2 died over the summer when a storm came through and a power surge fried the motherboard. It had a lifetime subscription too! Unfortunately, I haven’t had the funds to replace it or even get it fixed. A new TiVo would make the perfect Christmas gift and would replace my old box! 🙂

  12. @ Daryl:

I decommissioned my old Tivo HD and gave it to a friend. I simply started anew with the Premiere.

Yes, Tivo2Go for the Mac. Best stuff ever. I bought Toast Titanium so it’s now entirely automated.

On the Tivo Transfer App (again, this is a Mac), I pick and choose which shows I want to move to my computer. Leave the Mac running and it’ll even automatically fetch shows you specify from your Tivo.

Once it’s downloaded to your Mac’s hard drive, you can have Roxio Toast Titanium auto-launch and transcode it.

In my case, I bring the video files to work and watch it there on a USB drive!

  13. I’d love to try one. I’ve been using a Panasonic DVD recorder. I like it, but even at the lowest quality, it only records eight hours on a disk.

  14. @The Slapster.

Agreed Brother. To be honest the only time I EVER use On Demand Service is when My cable DVR has decided for some reaosn NOT to tape the show I want it to. Tivo, even though you pay extra for it, is WELLLLL worth it!

  15. new Tivo would be great so I could use the new iPad app. The app requires a Premiere. (also the HDMI port on my HD is shot)

  16. Just ordered one of these to replace an older one destroyed by a power surge when electric pole in yard got hit by car. Be nice to win another so I can use some cool feature like watch in any room!

  17. I have a Tivo series 2 with lifetime service. I am well pleased with it, it does everything tivo said it would. But I would love to get a free upgrade.

  18. Wow this sounds awesome. I have a DVR from my cable provider and this blows it out of the water (the access to Netflix and Amazon on Demand big time bonuses for me!) Thanks for the chance to win one! You Rock!

  19. Being stationed in Afghanistan with the Army I am missing all my favorite shows. I’d love to be able to record some of them on tivo to catch up on upon my return.
Even here in the desert I try to get on your site daily or at least a few times a week. Great info!

  20. I want one. I am getting seriously frustrated with my cable company’s DVR. Now that I am recording in HD, not enough space left.

  21. DTV’s dvr is weak. TW cable’s is worse. My brother’s 5 yr old TiVo blows them away. So I’d love a free one. There’s a rumor DTV may start supporting them again.

  22. My TIVO Series 2 is one of my most used entertainment devices. I would luge to upgrade to a TiVo Premiere.

  23. I have been with Tivo for many years. I find it to be the best investment I have ever made. I would like to thank the Gadgeteer for keeping me up to date on the latest in electronic equipment and want to note that I have heeded their advice in the purchase of many of my gadgets.

  24. The Premiere is very nice. The only real flaw is the lack of a display on the front (the Series 3 units could show what they were recording instead of just showing that they were recording).

  25. @daryl You can’t transfer the lifetime, but they do give you a deal on a new lifetime subscription, and you get to keep the lifetime on the old to give to someone else. I am SORELY tempted. Log in to the TiVo site with your account and check the upgrade option. Still expensive, but at least a nice deal.

  26. I have been looking for something just like this for my home entertainment system. Best of luck to everyone!

  27. Working way too many hours, Tivo would be a blessing. No more missing Sons of Anarchy and then trying to catch back up. I would love to win this!

  28. Is it silly of me to constantly check for the Tivo app for iPad when I don’t have the Premiere yet? I am on a Tivo 2… time to upgrade soon I suppose 🙂 Upgrading for free even better 😮

  29. Awesome giveaway. I miss so many programs on TV because some times i come late of get busy with that. I guess now i don’t need to miss, if i win this.

  30. I’m new to HDTV programming as we just got our first – a Samsung UN46C8000 3D TV. I immediately requested HD programming from our cable provider. The monthly cost of their DVR paired with the clunky interface (compaired to Windows 7 Media Center, which we used as a DVR previously) has us without an HD DVR at the moment. I’m looking at options for the future and have been comparing the costs of building a Windows 7 entertainment PC, getting a Tivo Premier, and The Moxi HD DVR. The Tivo is entriguing but I’m scared to take the plunge because of the monthly fee. I already have many on-demand options with the Internet@TV apps on the new TV. I’m also somewhat worried about losing Stars OnDemand through my cable box. Winning this contest would be a guilt-free way to take the Tivo plunge.

  31. I wanna win this.. This will be nice gift to my husband so that he can watch all episode Dexter without worrying of missing any episode now.

  32. I love my Tivo! It’s THE best. (it’s getting a little old though, we could use the new version) thanks!!!

  33. I love this review. I still have the 2nd generation Tivo box and have had to replace the hard drive twice 🙁 It’s awesome that you’re giving one of them away!

  34. I have been a fan of the TiVo since I first tried the series 1. Would love to win a Premiere–they look great–and love the iPad remote option.

  35. Help! Please free me from this monstrosity that is the DirecTV DVR! Never has one device caused me so much heartache and frustration. This thing has to be a woman! I will go back to my cable company in a heartbeat if I win this TIVO!

  36. Can the Tivo you get under this program be eligible for
product lifetime subscription at the end of the 1 year
    term?
