A countertop garden doesn’t stop growing just because you’re eating somewhere else for a few days. Auk Mini 2 has a setting for that: Slow Mode, which reduces plant growth and water consumption. It’s a useful option when you’re traveling, or when the herbs are getting ahead of your cooking.
The four-pot garden includes its own grow light, and you can change modes on the light bar itself. There’s an optional Bluetooth app too, but you don’t need to pair a phone to run the garden.

What else $239 buys
The Auk Mini 2 keeps its four pots small, quiet and good-looking, and Slow Mode is the feature frequent travelers will actually use. It is not the only way to keep herbs alive on a counter, though. Two gardens bracket it: one grows more than twice as many plants for less money, and one matches its four-plant footprint and hands-off brief almost exactly, then locks you into its own refills.
AeroGarden Bounty Basic

The Bounty Basic is the volume play. Nine pods instead of four pots, a 30W full-spectrum LED hood that rises to give plants 24 inches of grow height, and a 1.1-gallon bowl, the largest in AeroGarden’s countertop line. It answers the Auk’s Slow Mode with its own Vacation Mode, which drops the light to eight hours a day so plants sip water and nutrients while you are gone. Herbs grow in water with liquid plant food, and AeroGarden’s pre-seeded pod kits make the first planting a two-minute job.
The trades are size and finish. At 17.25 by 11.25 inches it takes noticeably more counter than the Auk, and black matte plastic does not warm up a kitchen the way the Auk’s wood and aluminum do. The Basic also skips Wi-Fi and a touchscreen, so scheduling happens on the unit’s own display. In exchange you get more than double the planting room for $59 less, and a seed pod catalog that covers everything from cherry tomatoes to cascading petunias.

Véritable Smart

The Véritable Smart is the Auk’s closest relative. Four plants, a compact 13.0 by 7.3 inch footprint, and a passive hydroponic system with no pump to hear. Its LED masts adjust their height as plants grow, and the Smart’s party trick is adaptive lighting: the LEDs dim or brighten against the light already in the room, so a sunny kitchen does not get double-lit. The 2-liter tank and capillary wicking water the plants for three to four weeks between refills, which covers most trips without a dedicated travel mode. Four Lingots of your choice come in the box, and the garden is made in France.
The trade is freedom. The Véritable grows Lingots and only Lingots, pre-seeded refill bricks that carry their own substrate and nutrients. The Auk’s plain pots take any seed you own. The Véritable’s tank is also the smallest here at 2 liters, and at $249.99 it costs $10 more than the Auk while matching its plant count rather than beating it. What the extra money buys is the smallest footprint of the three and a garden that asks almost nothing of you between refills.

Slow growth, not a switched-off garden
Slow Mode keeps the light on for 16 hours and off for eight. That’s the same schedule as the regular Herbs & Salads mode, even though Auk describes the slow setting as reducing growth and water use. It isn’t simply a shorter lighting day.

The mode button cycles between the three programs, and a blue indicator identifies Slow Mode.
There’s a separate Fruit & Veggies setting for flowering and fruit production, with 20 hours of light and four hours off. That gives tomatoes and chili plants a different growing program from the herbs you’re snipping for dinner.
Top up before you leave
You can top up the reservoir before it’s empty. Add nutrients in proportion to the water you put in, following the instructions for your crop and its growth stage. Plan for water and nutrient top-ups during longer trips, even in Slow Mode.

Plant shape needs attention too. Taller growth can shade neighboring plants, so Auk recommends trimming it back when that happens and keeping the light roughly six inches above the plants.
The light fits around your kitchen routine

The power button handles the daily schedule and temporary dimming, so the grow light can fit around when you use the kitchen. Temporary dimming resets to normal brightness the next day.
The optional app connects over Bluetooth for lighting and mode adjustments. It also provides growing advice and access to support.
Herb seeds come in the box; bigger crops need planning
The standard package includes coco fiber for four pots, herb-and-salad nutrients, basil and leaf parsley seeds, and the USB-C power supply. The base has a wooden sleeve, with wooden dowels supporting the plant light.

For tomatoes or chilies, Auk recommends its separate kit with larger pots, longer rods and Bloom Booster nutrients.
