Most car-branded watches lean on racing stripes and a badge. The Mazda x Seiko BF9504 goes the other way: it reads like a Seiko chronograph that happens to know a lot about Mazda interiors. That restraint is the whole pitch, and it beats the loud versions.

Mazda calls the design idea “aesthetics of subtraction.” That philosophy shows up in the dial’s textures, which do the work color usually does. Model BF9504 is the third Seiko collaboration for Mazda, launched in Japan on October 23, 2026 at ¥69,300, which converts to roughly $440 at recent exchange rates, with two bands in the box.

Buying one from outside Japan takes planning, and Mazda hasn’t announced a U.S. price or release. Dealer orders opened in Japan on October 29.

A Dial Inspired by Mazda’s Instrument Clusters

Gray dial, black metal finishes in differing textures, red at the tip of the stopwatch seconds hand and on the crown. Mazda’s instrument clusters work the same way: layer surface texture instead of piling on color. Depth comes from those finishes rather than from decoration, which is the argument Mazda makes for the whole design.

MAZDA SEIKO CHRONOGRAPH

Lettering comes in Mazda Type, the automaker’s own typeface, which is the sort of detail you catch on a second look rather than a first. “ESTD 1920 HIROSHIMA, JAPAN” runs across the dial and case back, tying the watch to the company’s origin instead of a specific model. For a watch with no car name on it, that’s a smarter anchor than a logo.

Glow duration depends on how much light the dial absorbed beforehand, a caveat that applies to every luminescent paint and rarely makes the press materials.

Mazda says the instrument-cluster-inspired dial prioritizes legibility. Lumibrite is limited to the hour and minute hands, so the chronograph indications don’t receive the same luminous treatment.

Curved Hardlex and a 39.2mm Case

Curved Hardlex is a first for this collaboration series. Mazda uses it rather than sapphire, saying the strengthened glass adds depth to the dial and changes its appearance with the viewing angle.

The stainless steel case measures 39.2mm across, 47.2mm lug to lug, and 11.4mm thick.

The watch weighs approximately 108 grams with the bracelet fitted. Mazda doesn’t publish a separate weight for the leather-strap configuration.

Forty-seven millimeters is the number to check against your wrist, not the 39.2.

Two Bands Included

Two bands ship in the box: a stainless steel bracelet and black cowhide with brown painted edges. The bracelet is itself new to this series, which shipped earlier models on leather and polyester. The watch arrives on the bracelet, and the leather changes its character without a second purchase.

Lug width is 20mm, which keeps the aftermarket open. Mazda points buyers to a watch specialist for swaps, and professional fitting may carry a charge. Anyone planning to swap often should price that in.

Bracelet sizing covers roughly 14cm to 20cm wrists. Measure before ordering.

Quartz Movement and Water Resistance

Inside runs a battery quartz movement with standard chronograph functions. Accuracy averages ±15 seconds a month, and Mazda estimates three years per battery. Quartz chronographs are normal at this price. Mechanical ones are not, so nobody should expect winding here.

Included with the watch is a test cell, which may die sooner than a fresh battery would. Plan on a replacement earlier than the three-year figure suggests. Small annoyance, easy fix.

Water resistance is rated at 10 bar. Check the supplied instructions for permitted water activities and restrictions on operating the crown and pushers.

Made in Japan, the watch comes with a three-year warranty from purchase. Overseas buyers should confirm where warranty service is available.

Price and Availability

¥69,300 including Japanese consumption tax. Mazda lists sales through its Japanese online store, Hiroshima headquarters goods shop, and Japanese dealers. The announcement does not specify U.S. availability.

Overseas buyers should confirm shipping eligibility, total costs, return terms, and warranty handling with their seller before ordering. Mazda’s defect-only return policy covers orders placed with Mazda itself. This one is pitched as a standard model with no published edition size.

Who Should Buy the Mazda x Seiko Chronograph?

MAZDA SEIKO CHRONOGRAPH 4

Mazda owners and people who like car design without the branding get the most from this watch. The instrument-cluster dial is the draw, and it doesn’t require owning a Miata to land. Seiko’s new Presage GMT makes the same quiet-design argument without the automotive tie.

Skip it if sapphire or a mechanical movement is a priority. Overseas buyers should confirm warranty-service arrangements before purchasing. Seiko’s 40mm HGK001 chronographs list sapphire crystal and sit within a millimeter of this case. Neither alternative has a Mazda connection, which is the point of this one.

Shipping and any applicable import charges will add to the ¥69,300 Japanese retail price. You’re paying for the design and the collaboration, not the spec sheet.

Buy it because the dial looks like a dashboard worth staring at, not because it’s the best spec for the money. That’s a fair reason, and Mazda built a watch that earns it.
