Palmer, OKNIFE U1 Pro and TiRant RAZOR V3 utility cutters

A package cutter becomes much more useful when it has a place outside the kitchen drawer. A small retracting body can ride in a coin pocket, a folding cutter can clip beside your keys, and a cutter with a screwdriver can handle the assembly job after you open the box.

The James Brand Palmer, OKNIFE U1 Pro and Exceed Designs TiRant RAZOR V3 take those three routes. All use replaceable utility blades, but their carry arrangements and controls make them different tools to live with. Start with where you want yours to sit between deliveries.

The Palmer keeps the blade inside a rectangular handle rather than folding a blade holder around a pivot. That gives it a simple rhythm for a delivery pile: slide the edge out, make the cut, then retract it before setting the cutter down.

The Buttermilk and Raspberry version has an anodized 6063 aluminum handle. It measures 3.5 inches closed, 1.5 inches tall and 0.4 inches wide, and weighs 2.5 ounces. The lanyard supplies a grab point when the body is tucked into a pocket. This is loose-pocket carry rather than a pocket-clip design, which makes it the straightforward choice if you dislike a clip on the edge of your trousers.

Blade replacement is tool-free. The Palmer uses standard utility blades, so a worn edge does not turn this into a sharpening project. The aluminum version costs $59; the lighter translucent Palmer Clear is a separate material choice, not the version pictured here.

OKNIFE U1 Pro: open the box and reach the fastener

Price: OKNIFE U1 Pro, Carbon Fiber Black, $34.99

The U1 Pro adds a folding screwdriver to a utility-blade folder. Its blade holder uses a rail lock, while a separate button lock holds the screwdriver open. Those are two distinct controls, worth learning before making it your everyday cutter.

Its Carbon Fiber Black version combines a G10 handle with a carbon-fiber overlay and carries with a pocket clip. The roughly 3.7-inch closed body is longer than the Palmer's, but the clip keeps it accessible at the pocket opening instead of leaving it loose at the bottom.

The driver gives this model a useful role when a delivery needs a little assembly or a small screw needs attention. It takes replaceable 4mm hex bits; a full-size quarter-inch bit set is not the same fit. Keep the cutter for cutting and use the driver for the fastener, rather than asking the utility blade to do both jobs.

The exact Carbon Fiber Black model is $34.99 on Amazon, sold by OKNIFE and shipped by Amazon.

TiRant RAZOR V3: a dedicated cutter with a deep-carry clip

The stonewashed TiRant RAZOR V3 brings a flipper and a deep-carry clip to a replaceable-blade cutter. Its titanium handle is 3.42 inches long, and the complete knife weighs 2.4 ounces with a blade. The appeal here is keeping a dedicated cutting tool in a repeatable pocket position without adding the U1 Pro's driver.

Ceramic bearings run in brass cages at the pivot, and a raised release button lets you exchange the utility blade without dismantling the handle. Compatible standard utility blades include Milwaukee General Purpose and DeWalt Carbide. Check that a replacement is seated correctly in its holder before use.

The $80 stonewashed base configuration includes the standard clip and ten generic SK2 or SK5 blades. A mini clip, pry-bar spacer and carbon-fiber scale are paid options.

For a deeper look at blade formats and spare storage, our replaceable-blade refill guide covers a different set of tools. Keep the edge away from your other hand and use only enough exposed blade for the packaging in front of you.
