Xiaomi has revealed the Xiaomi 18 Fold, and the timing is almost impossible to miss. The company says its new wide-screen foldable will launch in China on September 7, just two days before Apple is expected to show its first foldable iPhone at its September 9 event.
That means Xiaomi gets to introduce this shape first, at least in this particular launch week. It also gives the company a chance to define what a modern wide foldable should look like before Apple enters the conversation.
A shorter, wider foldable
The Xiaomi 18 Fold uses what Xiaomi calls a “mid-fold” design. It’s shorter and wider than the tall, narrow foldables we’ve seen from earlier Mix Fold models, with a 5.38-inch cover display and a 7.58-inch internal screen.
That cover display should be more comfortable for everyday tasks and one-handed use, while the larger inner panel is designed around multitasking and video. The proportions also make the phone look more like a compact passport when it’s closed than a conventional smartphone.
Xiaomi has shown the phone in a dark red finish with flat sides and a horizontal camera island across the rear. The design is immediately familiar as a wide foldable, but it doesn’t look like Xiaomi simply copied the latest Galaxy Z Fold. The camera treatment gives it a distinct identity, even if the overall shape is becoming increasingly common.
Three cameras, including a telephoto
Xiaomi has confirmed a triple-camera system developed with Leica. That’s important because camera hardware remains one of the clearest differences between wide foldables.
Digital Chat Station claims the setup includes an f/1.7 main camera, an f/2.8 telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom, and a 17mm ultrawide camera. Those details are still leaks, so I’m treating them as provisional until Xiaomi publishes the full specification sheet.
If the telephoto camera is confirmed, it would give the Xiaomi 18 Fold a useful advantage over foldables that rely on a main camera and ultrawide combination. A proper optical zoom is more valuable than another round of vague AI camera promises, especially on a phone that’s expected to sit near the top of Xiaomi’s range.
Xiaomi’s own chip takes center stage
The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be powered by Xiaomi’s XRing O3 chipset. It’ll also reportedly be one of the first smartphones to use CXMT LPDDR6 memory.
Xiaomi is clearly making the chip part of the story. This isn’t just another foldable using a Qualcomm or MediaTek platform. Xiaomi wants the 18 Fold to show that it can control more of the hardware stack, from the processor to the memory and the software.
The phone is also expected to run HyperOS 4 with Xiaomi’s MiMo on-device AI model. That points toward local AI processing, although we’ll need to see exactly what the software can do before treating that as more than a specification headline.
Xiaomi has also described a new “dragon bone” hinge that has gone through simulation-based durability testing. That sounds promising, but hinge quality is something we’ll need to judge after real phones have spent time in real pockets, bags, and hands.
Xiaomi beats Apple to the announcement
The September 7 launch date is the part that makes this announcement especially interesting.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to be announced on September 9, with a similar wide-screen design. Apple hasn’t confirmed the phone’s name or specifications, so the comparison remains based on reports rather than official information.
Still, Xiaomi has chosen to put its phone on stage two days earlier. That gives the Xiaomi 18 Fold the opening move and lets Xiaomi claim the wide-foldable spotlight before Apple has a chance to take over the conversation.
There’s an important distinction here. Xiaomi isn’t beating Apple to foldables in general. Xiaomi has already released foldable phones under the Mix Fold name. It’s beating Apple to this newer, wider form factor at a moment when the entire industry appears to be moving in the same direction.
The big problem is availability
For now, Xiaomi has only confirmed a launch in China. There’s no official word on a global release, pricing, or when the phone might reach Europe, the UK, or the United States.
That matters because Xiaomi’s hardware can be genuinely exciting, but a product that stays in China is a very different proposition from a phone you can buy with normal regional support, warranty coverage, and network compatibility.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold looks like a serious entry into the wide-foldable race. It has the screen proportions, Leica cameras, a new in-house chipset, and a design that stands apart from Samsung’s approach.
But the launch date is only half the story. The real test will be the price, the software experience, the camera performance, the hinge, and whether Xiaomi is prepared to sell this phone beyond China.
For now, Xiaomi has done exactly what it wanted to do. It has put a wide foldable in front of the world before Apple has even shown its own.
