NEWS – Amazon’s latest Alexa+ feature turns your Ring doorbell into a conversational assistant that can identify who’s at your door, understand what they need, and respond naturally on your behalf. Whether you’re home, busy, or simply don’t want to be interrupted, Alexa handles the conversation for you.
What is Alexa+ Greetings?
Alexa+ Greetings combines Ring Video Descriptions with Alexa’s conversational AI to create an intelligent front-door experience. When someone rings the doorbell, Ring’s camera analyzes visual cues: what the person is wearing, what they’re holding, and their actions. This helps determine who’s there. A delivery driver with a package gets recognized differently than someone casually stopping by.
Using this visual context along with any information the visitor shares, Alexa manages the interaction according to your personalized instructions.
Setting Up Alexa+ Greetings
Getting started is straightforward. In the Ring app, tap AI Features from the menu tab and toggle on Alexa+ Greetings. From there, set personalized instructions through any Alexa-enabled device like an Echo, Fire TV, or the Alexa app.
Just tell Alexa what you want it to say. For example: “If I get any deliveries during the weekend, tell them to leave it by the back door.” Alexa remembers your instructions and acts accordingly.
The feature also includes pre-set greetings for common scenarios, like asking delivery personnel to place packages out of sight. You can check your current settings anytime by asking, “What are my greetings instructions?” or “What will you tell my visitors at the door?”
Practical Use Cases
Managing deliveries: Alexa can thank drivers, let them know you’ll grab the order soon, or direct them to water or snacks you’ve set out. Specify package placement instructions like “through the side gate and on the back porch” or “put it on the bench by the door out of sight.” If a driver has follow-up questions about signatures or access, Alexa handles it in real-time.
Handling interruptions: When door-to-door salespeople arrive, Alexa delivers a polite message on your behalf. Set instructions like “If someone comes to the door trying to sell something, politely let them know we’re not interested” and carry on with your day undisturbed.
Greeting friends and family: When people stop by while you’re occupied, Alexa makes the interaction feel warm rather than awkward. It can say something like, “I’ll let them know you stopped by. Would you like to leave a message?” giving you full context for follow-up.
Staying informed while away: Alexa manages every visitor interaction and keeps you informed. When a neighbor stops by about a misdelivered package or a contractor arrives for an estimate, Alexa asks about the purpose of their visit and captures detailed messages. Review these alongside video footage in the Ring app for complete context.
Privacy and Control
Alexa’s responses are designed to be helpful without revealing whether you’re home, and doorbell interactions remain separate from your smart home controls. You maintain complete control over when and how Alexa responds.
