I love ice cream but I don’t get to eat it nearly as often as I’d like because Jeanne can’t tolerate dairy and making non-dairy ice cream at home with our own ingredients can be a hassle to drag out an electric ice cream maker and all the necessary gear. When I saw the Chef’n Sweet Spot Instant Ice Cream Maker my eyes lit up because it looks like it could be the holy grail of frozen treat makers.

The Chef’n Sweet Spot Instant Ice Cream Maker doesn’t require electricity, batteries, a crank, or even ice. All it needs is space in a freezer and scraping action from you.

How does it work? It’s a flat metal bowl that you store in the freezer until you’re ready to make ice cream. Then you take it out and pour the ice cream mixture (the Chef’n Sweet Spot Instant Ice Cream Maker comes with a recipe book) into the frozen metal bowl. After a very short time, the cold surface freezes the mixture and you then mix and scrape it into the consistency that you like using the provided tools.

  2. There are Asian dessert shops in our area that have this kind of ice cream. You can watch them to see if you want to do the same thing at home. I wonder if they have recipes that use lactose-free milk? That would prevent some milk-related problems.

    1. Is there lactose free cream since using milk makes the very inferior ice milk desert?

Well I’m back from the Internet and nope, there seems to be no such thing as lactose free cream. There is lactose-free half and half which would make a passable ice cream.

      1. There is Lactaid brand lactose-free ice cream, but that would defeat the purpose of this ice cream making gadget.

        1. True. And their ingredient list includes their own lactose enzyme so I assume that if you could add that to the cream that you might be able to make ice cream without lactose. Assuming their enzyme works on the person which I understand isn’t that sure.

        1. Oooo. I get to be pedantic. 😎 You made Non-Dairy Frozen Desert. No cream so no Ice Cream.

I’ve eaten Ben and Jerry’s non-dairy Cherry Garcia and although it’s tasty you never forget you’re eating something made with coconut milk.

  3. We’ve gotten off discussion but this is a pretty cool idea I think. Great to try limited flavors or for a party folks can make their own ice cream. You supply the base and the mix-ins and people can make their own.

I’ve done this with liquid nitrogen which works pretty well but you have to have liquid nitrogen which isn’t always easy to come by in the little place I live.
