Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale 13

REVIEW – I have been a coffee lover for most of my life (starting with coffee-flavored Jelly Belly’s in childhood). After my young adult years drinking office coffee and cheap K-cups at home, I realized how much joy a good espresso brought me. I’ve used everything from terrible <$50 espresso machines to >$1k fully automatic machines, and everything in between. My latest addition to my morning coffee arsenal is the excellent Flair Pro 3 manual lever espresso maker combined with a 1Zpresso J-Ultra Manual Coffee Grinder. I was missing a good coffee scale though, so the offer to review the upcoming Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale was fortuitous.

Design and features

Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale 3

The Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale surprised me with how small it was out of the box. It’s barely larger than the included dosing cup, which magnetically attaches to the scale (so you can measure and pour your beans into your grinder/machine then keep using the scale for measuring water ratio/weight.

On the right side we have a USB-C charging port, and a 3-position switch (Off, Mute, On). All of the accessories are made of metal and feel very nice. The scale itself is plastic but looks and feels nice as well.

The LCD screen is easy to read and has two touch buttons (top left and top right) to control various functions like changing the mode and to taring the scale.

The pour over extension platform is great for a pour over brew setup or even to brew two small espresso cups side by side. It also attaches magnetically to the scale.

The bottom of the scale has large rubber pads to prevent sliding while in use.

Performance

The above video shows some of the functions of the Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale including brewing espresso while it measures water weight and times your shot (don’t judge me too harshly, I was still dialing in my Flair 3 Pro so the shot was longer than I usually like). The included espresso mode automatically starts a timer and tracks flow and weight of the shot while you brew, so you can get exact amounts of water as well as duration of shots.

I also tested out the excellent pour over mode, which shows you your water-to-beans ratio live as you pour, so you can get extremely exact ratios. This precision allows you to dial in both espresso and pour over with minimal fuss. I found the scale to be very easy to use and it’s definitely elevated my morning cup. The battery also seems like it will last forever: I’ve only used one of three battery bars in my multiple-uses-per-day testing period of a few weeks.

Final thoughts

Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale 15

The Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale has earned a place at my espresso station, easily replacing the basic kitchen scale that I had been using before. I’m subscribed to a rotation of great coffee beans (through Bottomless), and dialing in each new batch of beans from different brewers is so simple now. I look forward to each day’s coffee, and Laybird’s scale is a big part of making that simple.

What I like about the Laybird MagAttach Coffee Scale

  • Very compact size
  • Premium build quality and materials
  • Magnetic attachment of dosing cup and flat plate

What needs to be improved?

  • Nothing – it’s everything you’d want in a nice coffee scale
