Same StrongArm, new steel. Gerber’s StrongArm MagnaCut keeps the full-size fixed blade and the multi-mount sheath, then swaps the blade to CPM MagnaCut.

The shape, the grip and the carry stay put. You’re paying for how the edge holds up after a weekend of camp chores.

It’s $174.99. The coyote-brown, plain-edge 420HC StrongArm is $109.99, so the upgrade costs $65. Both have a 4.8-inch blade and measure 9.8 inches overall.

The upgrade is the steel

MagnaCut is a stainless powder steel that steel designer Larrin Thomas built to resist rust, chipping and edge wear at the same time. Its trick is skipping the big chromium carbides that make a lot of stainless steels chip easier. For you, that should mean fewer trips to the sharpener and fewer rust spots after a damp weekend.

The 420HC version, model 30-001058N, uses a cheaper, easy-to-sharpen steel under a black ceramic coating, and it’s listed at 7.2 ounces. Same coyote handle, same full tang, same pommel. So the $65 goes into the blade.

Same full-size knife, three ways to carry it

The MagnaCut model, 1075372, is a plain-edge drop point that weighs 7.6 ounces. The glass-filled nylon handle has a rubberized diamond texture, and the full tang pokes out the end as a striking pommel with a lanyard hole. It’s made in the USA.

At 9.8 inches long, this is a real fixed blade, not a pocket knife you forget about. It’s sized for camp jobs like splitting kindling, cutting cord and prepping food.

The sheath is the StrongArm’s party trick. A snap-in MOLLE strap mounts it vertically on webbing. Detachable belt hoops turn it sideways for horizontal belt carry. Nylon webbing gives you a drop-leg setup with secondary retention. The standard 420HC StrongArm ships with the same kit.

Pick the mount for your gear. MOLLE works on a pack or vest with webbing. Belt carry is the easy camp setup. Drop-leg keeps the handle clear of a big pack’s hip belt.

Care and warranty

MagnaCut resists rust. It isn’t rustproof. Keep the blade clean, dry and lightly oiled, rinse it in fresh water after salt water, and sharpen lightly and often, per Gerber’s care guide.

Both StrongArms carry a limited lifetime warranty in North America and 25 years elsewhere. Gerber’s warranty covers material and workmanship defects, not wear, sharpening or misuse.

MagnaCut or 420HC

The 420HC StrongArm is the better buy for most people. It’s the same full-size blade, grip and three-way sheath for $109.99.

Price: $109.99

I’d grab the 420HC and spend the $65 on the rest of a first camping kit. Go MagnaCut if this knife lives on your pack and gets wet a lot. That’s where an edge that fights rust, chips and wear earns its keep.
