For a full day on the grass at Circuit of The Americas, I'd start with water, earplugs and something to sit on. Add shade and a phone charger, and your bag starts looking a lot more useful than one stuffed with things security might turn away.

The United States Grand Prix at COTA runs October 23 through 25. Austin's forecast checked Thursday morning calls for highs around 83 to 87°F and lows around 58 to 60°F across the weekend. That's sun-hat weather for much of the day, with a removable layer for the cooler start or finish. It's an Austin forecast, not a promise for every hour at the track.

These ten picks cover hydration, sun, sound, seating and the phone that holds your plans. Buy only what your current kit doesn't cover. Amazon stock doesn't guarantee arrival before the race, so check delivery to your address before ordering anything for this weekend.

Price: Individual items $6.99–$116.95, not a bundle
Where to buy on Amazon: Nalgene · Mack's · BAGAIL · Helinox · Columbia (check size) · Neutrogena · Kelty · Anker · Nikon · Knockaround

Start with the gate rules

COTA's motorsport policy allows bags no larger than 12 by 12 by 20 inches, portable collapsible chairs, binoculars and one empty water bottle up to 32 ounces. Choose plastic: the circuit's water-bottle help page says metal and glass bottles aren't permitted. Sunscreen needs to be in a plastic container, not an aerosol can.

The clear-bag rules for certain concert upgrades aren't the same as the main race rules. If you've added an upgrade, check its separate restrictions before carrying your race-day kit over. Security screens bags, and the venue can change its rules, so read the current COTA guide before leaving.

1. Nalgene Sustain 32-ounce wide-mouth bottle

Nalgene 32-ounce bottle with tethered cap and capacity markings

Leave the insulated metal bottle at home for this one. This clear plastic Nalgene holds 32 ounces, matching COTA's published upper limit for an empty bottle.

The wide opening makes refilling straightforward, and the attached cap gives you one fewer loose piece to keep track of. The bottle isn't insulated, so don't expect refrigerator-cold water all afternoon. Its job here is to give you a reusable container that fits the venue's bottle rules.

Bring it empty, then use the circuit's water refill points. A bottle in your bag helps only if you keep using it.

2. Mack's Ultra Soft foam earplugs with a travel case

Mack's foam earplugs and carry case

You can be excited about the sound of F1 and still bring ear protection. This seven-pair Mack's pack includes a small travel case, so a spare pair doesn't have to disappear into the bottom of your bag.

Mack's lists a 33 dB Noise Reduction Rating. That's a laboratory rating, not a promise that every sound at the circuit will be reduced by exactly that amount. Correct fit is essential. Follow the roll, pull and hold instructions rather than resting the foam at the entrance to your ear.

Put the case somewhere you can reach before the cars start running. This is one of the smaller purchases on the list, and one to pack early.

3. BAGAIL clear zippered tote

BAGAIL clear tote product photo
COTA prohibits outside food, including the fruit shown in this product photo.

A clear bag isn't compulsory for the main F1 grounds under the current race policy, but being able to spot your sunscreen and earplug case is useful. This BAGAIL tote measures 12 by 6 by 12 inches and has a zip closure plus a removable shoulder strap.

The tradeoff is visibility in both directions. You'll be able to see your gear, and so will everyone else. Keep the contents simple, and don't turn the bag into a portable cupboard.

Those dimensions fit within COTA's published race-day size limit. The bag's “stadium approved” product name isn't a universal entry guarantee, and it doesn't override restrictions on anything you put inside it.

4. Helinox Chair One for a proper sitting break

Helinox Chair One folding chair

General admission gives you room to explore the viewing areas, not an assigned grandstand seat. COTA permits portable collapsible chairs, and the original Helinox Chair One packs into a roughly 14 by 4.5 by 4.5-inch case.

Its shock-corded frame and fabric seat turn a small carried bundle into somewhere to sit between sessions. Helinox lists a packed weight of about 2 pounds 2 ounces and a 320-pound capacity.

This is the expensive comfort option, not something you need to buy if you already have a suitable folding chair. It's also another item to carry when you move. Set up without blocking other people's view or a walking route, and check separate concert-area rules before taking it there.

5. Columbia Bora Bora sun hat in Fossil

A team cap is fun. A brim that goes all the way around has a different job: adding coverage around your face, ears and neck while you're standing outdoors.

This Fossil Bora Bora hat has mesh ventilation, an Omni-Wick sweatband and an adjustable drawstring. Check the available size before ordering, then try it with your sunglasses so the two sit comfortably together.

A hat doesn't replace sunscreen on exposed skin. Think of it as the part of your sun kit you can put on once and keep with you as you move between viewing spots.

6. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF45 lotion

Neutrogena SPF 45 sunscreen twin pack

This twin pack contains two 3-ounce tubes, so you can bring one rather than carry both. It's lotion in a plastic container, which fits COTA's no-aerosol sunscreen rule.

Neutrogena identifies it as broad-spectrum SPF45 with 80-minute water resistance. That doesn't mean one application lasts the whole race day. Follow the label, including application before sun exposure, reapplication at least every two hours, and reapplication after the specified sweating interval or towel drying.

Keep the tube near the top of your bag. Sunscreen that's easy to reach is less likely to stay forgotten under your jacket.

7. Kelty Bestie blanket in Winter Moss/Treeline

A blanket gives you another way to settle onto the grass if you'd rather leave the chair at home. You can also drape it over your lap during the cooler part of the day. COTA explicitly lists blankets among its permitted items.

Kelty's Bestie uses polyester fabric and synthetic insulation, with a brushed underside and an included stuff sack. At roughly 75.6 by 42.1 inches, it's a one-person layer rather than a picnic blanket for the whole group. The listed weight is 1.54 pounds, so decide whether you'll use it enough to carry it all afternoon.

Wear your usual removable layer for walking around, and treat the blanket as an optional comfort extra. Use it on dry grass or over your lap.

8. Anker Nano 10,000mAh power bank

Anker Nano A1259 power bank

Photos, maps, messages and checking the schedule all compete for the same phone battery. Anker's A1259 Nano adds a 10,000mAh battery and a built-in USB-C cable in a pocketable package.

The cable is the useful detail. With a compatible USB-C phone, there's one fewer separate charging lead to forget. If your phone uses Lightning, bring an appropriate cable for the bank's ports. Its maximum 30W output doesn't mean every phone charges at that speed, and the rated battery capacity isn't the amount that reaches your phone after conversion losses.

Charge the bank before leaving. Keep it out of direct heat, and don't leave a damaged battery in your kit. COTA's published list doesn't specifically name small phone power banks, so check with the venue if you need explicit confirmation for yours.

9. Nikon Trailblazer 8×25 ATB binoculars

Nikon Trailblazer 8217 binoculars

Binoculars are on COTA's permitted list, and a compact pair gives you another way to look at a distant section of the circuit without holding your phone's digital zoom at its limit.

Nikon's model 8217 pairs 8x magnification with 25mm objective lenses. It weighs about 9.9 ounces and folds down for carrying. The modest size is the point: this is something you can keep with you as you walk, rather than a large optical setup that becomes its own luggage.

Don't expect binoculars to turn every viewing spot into a clear view of the entire lap. They're useful for looking more closely at what's in sight. Glasses wearers should check fit carefully because this model's eye relief is relatively short.

10. Knockaround Premiums polarized sunglasses

Knockaround Premiums On The Rocks frame and hinge details

Sunglasses and a brimmed hat solve different parts of the bright-day problem. The Premiums frame is a compact everyday option rather than another piece of bulky race equipment.

The On The Rocks version pairs amber polarized lenses with a translucent amber front and tortoise-pattern arms. Knockaround lists UV400 protection, and the included pouch gives you somewhere to put them when the sun drops. Try them with your hat before leaving so the two don't fight for space around your ears.

Polarization can change how some phone screens look at certain angles. A quick check at home is easier than wondering why your display looks odd while you're trying to find the next session.

Pack for the day, not for every possible day

Start with shoes you've already worn comfortably, your ticket or wristband, phone, payment method and the venue-compliant basics. Add the chair or binoculars if you'll use them enough to carry them.

Before you leave, empty the bottle, charge the power bank and check the latest forecast and COTA guide. Keep knives, glass and metal bottles, aerosol sunscreen, whistles and oversized bags out of the kit. A lighter bag with the right things in it beats a heavier one full of “maybe.”
