REVIEW – At this point I think I’ve thoroughly documented my love for Vosteed knives. They were one of the first knives I reviewed when I started writing for The Gadgeteer and they have continually impressed me with the quality and consistency of their product. Today’s model up for review is the Vosteed Vombat, a 2.92 inch blade with Bowie and Zulu blade styles to choose from. It also has some additional features that I’ll more at length further along, but suffice to say the design appears to be very well thought out. Read on if you want to hear more!

Design and features

Out of the box, the Vosteed Vombat is a beautiful knife. There are multiple finishes and a couple of different blade styles to choose from, but I went with the Dune blade finish and the Zulu blade style.

Vosteed Vombat 10

The back of the blade has not one, but two sets of jimping for extra grip in use.

The blade itself uses M390 steel, which is a very nice quality steel and a step above others I’ve seen in the past.

Vosteed Vombat 9

The clip on this knife has a very nice tension to it and holds up well over regular use.

Vosteed Vombat 11

One unique feature to this knife that I haven’t seen before is the adjustable spring that you can also replace if it ever fails. It allows you to set the tension to your preference as well. You can note in the picture below that there are three different slots you can select from. Also note that dog hair will find a way into everything you own after just a little while of being in the house.

Installing Custom Handle Scale Kit

Out of the box, this knife is ready to go, but Vosteed also included a customizable handle scale kit with the review and I selected a set of these gray Norplex G10 scales. This kits allows you to quickly change up the exterior of the knife as you like it. First off, the handle uses the same T8 screws, which is convenient.

Vosteed Vombat 13

Removing the screws, replacing the plate and swapping in a new set of silver screws was very easy.

Vosteed Vombat 14

The trickiest part of getting everything back together is getting the clip to seat back correctly, but with a little trial and error, it wasn’t too bad.

Vosteed Vombat 15

The thumb stud is also interchangeable and I wanted to swap in something for a little extra contrast. The thumb stud uses a T6 bit, so a bit of a departure from the T8 bits used for the body of the handle.

Vosteed Vombat 16

I went with the orange and quite like how it turned out. (Also included Smoky the Bear here for anyone looking for independent verification of size)

Performance

Out of the box, this easily took the hair off my arm. After use over a few weeks it’s not quite that razor sharp, but it still is very sharp and cleanly cuts paper, cardboard and wood.

Final thoughts

I really like this pocketknife. The ability to customize the look of the knife and the tensioning of the spring is really nice. The Dune finish of the blade is very good and makes for easy cleanup. We’ll see how it holds up to longer use. I definitely recommend this knife.

What I like about the Vosteed Vombat Knife

  • Customization out of the box is great
  • Fantastic M390 blade and finish
  • Ball bearing pivot and spring locking system is very smooth

What needs to be improved?

  • Nothing I’ve found so far
