REVIEW – Here we go again!! And I say that in a good way. I have been fortunate enough to get the opportunity to test and review another Android smartphone. If you have been following my smartphone reviews, you may remember that recently I have been pleasantly surprised by the hardware and software qualities of some of the latest brands and models outside of the Apple/Samsung power-players. While I remain an Apple IOS guy, I readily admit that I am really enjoying other brands with the Android OS. Now it is time again to take another Android OS smartphone for a spin. Let’s see if the Infinix Zero 8 Smartphone keeps me excited.

What is it?

The Infinix Zero 8 Smartphone features a  Mediatek MT6785 Helio G90T Octa-core processor, a  quad-camera on the rear that provides 64 MP (wide), 8 MP (ultrawide), 2 MP (macro), and 2 MP (depth), and a front dual-camera that provides 48 MP (wide) and 8 MP (ultrawide). The screen is a  6.8 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with a 1080 x 2460 pixels resolution. It has a 4500 mAh non-removable battery and Fast Charging. The design includes sensors such as Fingerprint (side-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and a compass. The Operating System is Android 10 operating system.

Additional specs: 8 GB RAM, 128 GB internal storage, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS with A-GPS, FM Radio, and a 2.0, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector. It is available in three colors: Silver Diamond, Black Diamond, and Green Diamond.

Performance

When I first took the phone out of the box, I put on the included case and charged it fully. Once I powered on the phone and went through the setup it was immediately evident that I would like this phone. It is fast and responsive. One issue I noticed during setup is that when I needed to choose a country, the United States was not listed so I had to choose “other”. The setup was easy and quick.

I started testing the phone by snapping a few pics and it was immediately obvious that the camera produces great true images even in less than desirable lighting conditions. The profile choices when using the camera include Bokeh Effect, 3D Beautification, Eye Tracking, and AI Detection. The phone also takes great video and the Electronic Image Stabilization features on both the front and the rear cameras work great for stabilizing shaky videos while recording.

Next, I decided to try a game that was included in the apps, even though I am not a gamer. The gaming experience was good with fast response, fluid movement, and brilliant colors. The 6.8” screen is a great size for everything including gaming and the screen offers nice brightness and a good refresh rate that enhances the experience. These specs also make watching videos and movies a fantastic experience, and especially so when watching 4K videos. The sound is good via the built-in speaker but much better when using headphones.

This Infinix the Zero 8 phone stays cool even after extended use. The battery life is great and it recharges quite fast. The big downside for me is that it is not waterproof, and when we contacted the manufacturer, they stated that it is splash resistant. Hmmm!!

The following is a quick overview video that I recorded: (I was also testing a lighting device so please forgive the less than superb lighting)

As I mentioned in the video, here is a picture that I took of a park that was 2o to 30 feet away. At the time I was seated in the driver seat of my truck and I took the pic through the closed passenger window:

What I like

  • The build quality, design, and sleekness of the phone
  • The display resolution
  • The size
  • The processing power
  • The cameras for both photos and videos
  • The numerous features including the 3 sign-in options
  • It charges quickly

What I’d change

  • The plastic back
  • The limited pre-loaded ringtones
  • Add 5G capability
  • Add wireless charging capability
  • Make waterproof!! Did I mention make waterproof!!!!!
  • Add a USA option for choice of the country during setup
  • Make the keyboard feedback experience consistent

Final thoughts

This Infinix Zero 8 phone is fast becoming another favorite of mine. It is a nice and sleek phone that is very responsive and the screen resolution is really nice. I am truly enjoying using it daily as I test it as my current business phone. I am disappointed that it is not waterproof which is a big deal.

  2. Agree with waterproof. Don’t care about 5G (most areas of the country outside of select areas in major cities will not see usable 5G for years).
