You have to pay close attention to your dog and your surroundings, and be really quick with the lock button.
I need to get one of these for my dog walks as it’s getting darker earlier in the evening. It’s much more dangerous to carry a flashlight separate from the leash as both your hands are restricted. I have been retractable leash walking all of our dogs for decades without an incident. Of course, the dog should be obedient and trained, and the leash operator “capable” of managing a leash (I understand that both requirements are not always in-place for all walkers and dogs).
