CROWDFUNDING NEWS – It’s not often that I find a drawing tool that is this cool in the way that it looks and in the way that it works. MAGCON is that tool. Let’s check it out.

What is it?

MAGCON is a pocket-sized anodized aluminum curved and straight ruler combo that can be used as a compass/protractor and is suitable for US letter-sized (A4) paper sheets.

Why do I like it?

I was sent a pre-production sample and I can say that there are several reasons why I like the MAGCON. First of all, it uses…magnets and I’m a sucker for anything that uses magnets.

The center cylinder doesn’t pierce paper like a traditional compass. Instead, it sticks to the paper with a low tack adhesive and then the ruler attaches to the cylinder with a magnet and smoothly rotates around it. It’s a genius design!

If you like to draw or want to be able to easily draw circles and arcs/curved lines and more, the MAGCON tool will let you do that without taking an art class.

Be sure to check out the video above which shows the MAGCON in action so you can see what you can do with this pocket design tool. The way it can be used to draw mandalas really caught my eye.

Where can I find more info?

The MAGCON campaign ends on 4/26/19 they launched today and have already met their funding goal of $1,019. You can pre-order a MAGCON set starting at $30. After the MAGCON campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in August 2019. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

        1. There’s a low tack adhesive on the bottom of the center point that sticks to the paper. The bottom of the center point isn’t magnetic, the bar that rotates around it is the magnetic piece.

You are wrong.I just received the device today, there is nothing but metal on the bottom and yes it slides around, it does need to be anchored somehow.

          2. It should have a clear adhesive sticker on the bottom of the hub. When you remove the sticker, the hub will stick to the paper that you place it on. If not, you should leave them a message on the campaign page.

        2. I’m so sorry to tell you that you bought a copy from scammers.
MAGCON sold on Kickstarter.com and only selling in our official website and we will sell on Indiegogo soon.
We have found the unauthorized use of our Work (MAGCON) being used at some websites and Amazon. We have never sent MAGCON to them.

  2. Curious if you’ve continued to use this much since the original post? Specifically because I’d like to know if the bond between the low-tack adhesive to your paper has remained consistent. I imagine every time you use it some particulates from the paper remain on the base, building up over time? I would expect that particulates in the air would also slowly build up, especially if you don’t store it in some kind of small case between uses.

As someone who has been able to test this product out, I’d love to hear your feedback.

    1. Hi Craig, I haven’t used it that often since I wrote about it. But I am sure that the “sticker” will not last forever. However, the stickiness is fine with the hub sitting in a drawer with no protection. I just took it out and tried it and it worked great. I just don’t know how long it will be like that.

  3. My friend and I have just unpacked ours (which came with no paperwork, no brand name even. I had to Google it to find out what it was called as I’d forgotten since I’d ordered it!). Yes it slides across the paper as you rotate the arm to draw circles. We put a tiny amount of Bluetak on the bottom, but really we shouldn’t have to. Will be an interesting time working out the good and bad aspects of it…

    1. Yes, this was frustrating to me as well. I also had to Google it to figure out who made it. I’ll try the Bluetak. I totally agree – there should be no need to do this. I’m also going to try a piece of sheet metal underneath, but that erases the portability factor completely.

      1. I’m so sorry to tell you that you bought a copy from scammers.
The original Magcon has a special design under the base, you don’t need to use bluetak.

    2. I have also bought this tool from a product ad on Facebook, and to my knowledge there was no dispute that it was a copy of an original. I have also just received and opened mine. No papers, no instructions and I had to Google search what it was because I had also forgotten that I had ordered it. Now I want to suggest to the designer of the product to include a thin magnet in the kit to put on the reverse side of the paper. I think it will work better than the adhesive which I also don’t have. A piece of double sided tape could be used or the stretchy gooey stuff you used at school to put posters up. I don’t know if I like this tool yet, because I am still figuring out why the magnets unscrew to 4 different parts and how to do precise drawings without marks all over the design. In all honesty, I bought this out of curiosity but it is so much smaller than it looked, I doubt if it would be of any use to me.

        1. PayPal has denied my dispute and the distributor has sent me a response via email:

          to me

Dear Sir or Madam, hello, this product is not adhesive, it is used by magnetite adsorption, you can assemble it.

It has now become comical. How do you communicate with someone about their illegal activities and they give you a child-like response? We are not winning this one. I’ll use Prestik on the base.

          1. Hi Jennieq,

Which website did you buy and I believed that they are using our marketing materials for selling online.

            Thank you!

  4. I just got mine, and there’s absolutely no adhesive, no paper to remove – just metal. Since there are no instructions, no business contact info, not even the company name on the box, it makes it hard to get ahold of anyone. Looks like a great tool – if you can get it to stay still. Anyone else have this issue?

      1. Thank you. I just did that, and I discovered I’ve fallen prey to a scam. The original, which is found on Kickstarter, has been copied illegally by a Chinese manufacturer. I bought mine from an Instagram ad in the wee hours of the night – not a brilliant decision on my part. The ad is on IG all the time, so beware. I’ve reported it, but I’m not sure what good that will do. At least I can warn others. Thanks again, Julie!

          1. Making a request for a refund – do you have to return the product, because if yes it would be too much of a nuisance to repack and send it back at my own cost. It took three months to arrive so I’m not sure if their money back option is still applicable.

      2. where is the campaign page? Even on kickstarter it doesn’t show any adhesive. They just draw like magic. Julie did yours come with any type instructions? Even their videos are not very informative on how it actually works.

          1. Thank you. I already had gone to that page. Can’t find anywhere to contact some one about Magcon, and not kickstart. I’ll look again later, maybe. Kinda burned out with trying to figure out the issue(s).

  5. Thank you for addressing the problem of unauthorized “knock-offs”…I bought 2 of them, not knowing this was the problem. They did not perform as expected and I became very frustrated. Now that I have read your page and comments I will request a refund immediately, and hopefully find the correct product soon as I’m very excited to use a properly made one of these design tools.
