Nike has announced its first mainstream shoe to feature a new self-lacing technology. Inspired by the film Back to the Future, Nike released an actual self-lacing version of Marty McFly’s sneakers on October 21, 2015. Though they caught our wonder and attention, they were largely unattainable–only a small number were made and were available only by charity auction. This week, however, Nike announced the Hyperadapt 1.0 which will showcase the same “adaptive lacing” system. The shoe will have a sensor in the heel and will automatically tighten when you insert your foot. There will be additional buttons on the side to manually fine-tune the fit. Already a revolutionary product, the Hyperadapt’s designers have even greater plans in mind. They envision this as a stepping stone to a future where laces will automatically tighten or loosen moment-to-moment based on the situation. For now, though, the Hyperadapt 1.0 will be available in three colors during the 2016 holiday season; you will need to be a member of the Nike+ portal (free to register) to purchase a pair.
