Today is a big day for Amazon. They’ve announced two more Alexa-enabled devices. There’s the Amazon Tap, a portable speaker with Alexa features, and the Amazon Echo Dot, a much smaller version of the original Amazon Echo. The Echo Dot features the same far-field microphones that are always on and  listening for your commands. They are sensitive enough to pick up your voice up to 20-25 feet away even if the area is noisy. The Echo Dot has been designed to connect to existing speakers although it does have its own built in speaker. The built in speaker isn’t powerful enough to fill a room with music like the larger Amazon Echo is able to do. That’s where your existing speakers come in. The Echo Dot can connect to your speakers with Bluetooth or a cable. You can add Amazon Echo Dots to rooms throughout your house so you’ll be able to easily order a bottle of Tide from the laundry room and ask Alexa to order a pizza from the bedroom.

Right now it appears that the only way to order the Echo Dot is by asking Alexa to order one through your existing Amazon Echo or your Amazon Fire TV. The Amazon Echo Dot is priced at $89.99 and is available for pre-order with shipping scheduled for March 31. Visit Amazon for more info.

Update: According to iMore, you can order the Echo Dot through the Amazon app on your phone.

        1. Interesting, it seems as though Amazon is making the purchase of the Echo Dot fairly difficult if you don’t have the original Echo or Fire TV. I wonder why they are doing this?
