If you have a spare $6300 laying around and a need or desire for underwater exploration, you need the Submarine Camcorder from Hammacher Schlemmer.  This little sub measures 19″ L x 14 1/2″ W x 7″ H, and it’s made of water-tight, marine-grade, hydrodynamic ABS.  Inside, there’s a HD video camera that takes 1280 X 720 video or 1280 X 800 still photos.  An iPad app lets you control “the sub’s electric thrust and lift propellers for forward/backward (5 kts forward; 1 kt reverse), left/right, and up/down movement. A virtual dashboard (an iPad’s motion sensors can also steer the sub) includes a joystick, camera controls, and displays depth, heading, battery level, and temperature data received from the sub’s built-in sensors.”  You and the sub’s receiver will stay dry while the sub dives to the limit of it’s 100′ video cable.  It has eight adjustable LEDs to light up the underwater environment, and it can operate up to 2 hours on a single charge.  Video will be stored on the sub’s internal 32GB memory, and still shots will be stored directly on the iPad.  The Submarine Camcorder will be great for inspecting the underwater portion of a boat, deck, or other structure; it will work equally well for just documenting underwater flora and fauna.  As mentioned earlier, it costs $6300 and is available now from Hammacher Schlemmer.

  2. For that price I would want a much better camera. 1280×700 is right around 1 megapixel. I mean come on, I have a PHONE that can do 8mp or 3264×2448. Cool concept tho.

  3. I would think the first question is the material the clear nose is made of and is it replaceable. Then address Drew’s comment.
