Minibru from ThinkGeek

Ready for yet another piece of coffee paraphernalia?  This is making my holiday wish list, and my father will probably be seeing it as well.  Coffee from a French press is widely considered to be the smoothest, richest coffee you could brew.  However, the typical French press brews anywhere from 6-8 cups of coffee and, while that’s rarely a problem if more than one person is drinking coffee, it’s not easy to brew up a single serving.  The Minibru is a solution for the person who just wants one cup.  It works along the same principle as a French press, but instead of plunging a sieve, the sieve is attached to a cylinder that is inserted into the coffee cup.  The coffee is filtered into the cylinder and the grounds remain at the bottom of the cup, below the sieve.  Viola, one cup of delicious French press coffee!  The system includes a glass coffee cup (dishwasher safe), silicone gasket and plunger (handwash only).  Minibru is available through ThinkGeek for $24.99.

  2. Bad idea. The coffee will sit in the cup the whole time, making it taste bitter. I would make the same thing but in reverse. Pull the plunger part out to remove coffee grounds.

  3. Not sure if it would really be noticeably bitter. The liquid wouldn’t be directly touching the grounds, once it’s plunged. Then again, I’d probably be drinking it too quickly to even notice 😉

  4. Everyone should avoid this item. I foolishly purchased it, only to find it impossible to remove the filter cylinder upon unboxing. I’m going to try a suggestion someone posted on ThinkGeek about soaking the mug in hot water for ‘a while’ later, but overall I’m not thrilled with this.
