timbuk2 muttmoverDo you like to take your dog or cat with you while you’re out and about, but you don’t want to look like Paris Hilton with a scared animal clutched under your arm?  If your pet is 15 pounds or smaller, he’ll fit in the Timbuk2 Muttmover backpack.  The bag is made of durable waterproof fabric-backed tarpaulin that’s claw-resistant and easily cleaned.  Zippered mesh sides keep your pet ventilated, and there’s a clip inside the bag that attaches to your pet’s harness  to make sure he doesn’t leap out before you’re ready.  The Muttmover is $90 at Timbuk2’s website.

  2. Yes I like to take my dog out but I make him walk, he’s got 4 legs to my 2, weighs 100kg+ and is probably more suited to carrying me rather than vice versa

@Evan “JabberWokky” Edwards If you’re asking when it’s available for sale, Timbuk2 has it in their store now.

@Mau No, this is not an April Fool’s joke. People use all sorts of pet carriers, and Timbuk2 made one that’s more easily used by bikers. Pet carriers aren’t that unusual, and this one from Timbuk2 is no where near the most expensive I’ve seen.

@Janet Cloninger – Actually, I was guessing it was an April Fool’s joke without being too obvious. Not because it’s unthinkable, but because Timbuk2 has a “cool hipster messenger bag” kind of vibe that — at first glance — this seemed to not quite fit with.

My wife and I breed fancy mice and we have little bag carriers for them. You have to get your pet around, and if your dog goes to work with you (as some do), this makes a lot of sense. In fact, it looks like it was because of an employee and her dog that they made this: http://www.timbuk2.com/blog/2011/03/25/coop-dharma-move-the-muttmover/

Of course, when it comes to dogs, we’re more of a Labrador Retriever family. Which would be ill-advised to place in a bag.

  5. How cute and one good point of this pet carrier is you won’t have to worry about a pooper scupper; I don’t know about the drainage situation though 🙁

@Janet – Had no idea Timbuk2 carried anything like this! After an initial set of giggles, I now think that this would work out perfectly for my little pomeranian. Yes, she has four legs of her own, but she would easily keel over after just a mile or so of hiking. I’ve just about convinced my girlfriend that this is a must-buy for us 😉
And the price, especially when compared to other carriers and (shudder) pet strollers, is very reasonable.

@Morgan Bornstein Something like this would work for our dog, too. Teddy is very neurotic, and he freaks out when things are “different.” Because he’s so scared, he’s constantly straining against his harness. I’ve always said I wouldn’t be surprised to see he had a harness-shaped bruise on his body. With the Muttmover, we could get him places without worrying he’ll hurt himself or jerk the leash out of our hands.
