usb desk hubSimple, but what a great idea!  This 4-port USB hub from USB Geek replaces the plastic grommet that fits in those cord-corralling holes drilled in the tops of computer desks.  It’s USB 2.0 and transfers files at speeds up to 480 Mbps.  You can connect up to four high-, full-, or low-speed USB devices and still have room to route your cables.  It apparently does not have an external power source.  The In-Desk 4-Port Hub is $12.00.

  2. Wow what a great idea! I can run my display connection down to the computer under my desk (if the hole in this device is big enough) and connect my mouse, keyboard, and other stuff up to this. Has anyone tried this?

@Bob DeLoyd It’s hard to see in the small picture here, but you can see more detail in the gallery of pictures at the USB Geek website. There’s a “break” in the circular grommet that seems to be filled in with a plastic plug. If you pop that plug out, you turn the doughnut shape into a tight C shape. I think you’d then be able to slide the USB hub over your cables, so you don’t have to worry that the plugs are too big to fit through the opening.

Yes, Julie has a great web site in The Gadgeteer, doesn’t she? I read it for years before I got a chance to work with her. It’s a great job! We’re glad you found us, too!
