On "What should I read next?" in Julie's gear diary:
I second the Jim Butcher Dresden books (one reviewer said think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Phillip Marlowe).
Likewise the Discworld series by Pratchett - if Douglas Adams wrote fantasy (on acid... or maybe laughing gas) Pratchett invented the "Glingleglingleglingle Fairy," a small magic creature who's sole purpose is to make the sound of bells whenever another fairy arrives, and the Discworld Sandman - who brings sleep to small children with sand the same as the sandman in other universes, only he doesn't bother to take it out of the bag first....
My wife is a big fan of the Charles DeLint stuff written about the fictional city of Newford.
On "Hobbies that do not involve gadgets" in Julie's gear diary:
Beer. Lots of it. ;-)
I homebrew (when I get the chance) and make a 5 gallon batch of a good scotch ale, or maybe a stout. About the highest tech thing I use is the thermometer. That being said, I could spend thousands on gadgets and thingummies and whatsits. The basic technique for making beer hasn't changed in thousands of years - put warm water on malted barley, wait a while, drain off the liquid, boil it with hops, cool it, add yeast, let it sit still it stops frothing, bottle it, wait a while for the flavours to meld and drink. Maybe a few afternoons of (easy) work and a month or two of elapsed time. -Keith
On "What do you tell people when they ask you what you want for Christmas?" in Julie's gear diary:
Here in California, gift cards or certificates never expire, and you can add them up - 3 or 4 $50 gift cards from Best Buy can add up to something decent, like most of an iPod. You just need to tell everyone you want a gift card from the gadget purveyor of your choice. As for the Wal-Mart card, while I avoid giving any money to the corporate equivalent of the Borg, if someone else paid for a card, and you haven't claimed any inventory in return, thats even worse - they have the money AND the inventory.
