When I bought my Little Swift bag from Tom Bihn, I also ordered a couple of their Clear Organizer Wallets. I wanted one of these little wallets to carry my “overflow cards” that don’t fit in my regular wallet, and my husband, Butch, was looking for something to replace the leather brick he’d been carrying in his back pocket. So, what do we think of our Tom Bihn Clear Organizer Wallets?

All images can be clicked for a larger view.

The wallet has a clear front made of 0.015″ Urethane. The backs are made of either 500 or 1000 denier Cordura, Vulcana hemp/recycled rubber (like my Little Swift), or cork. Butch chose the steel Dyneema fabric. His wallet perfectly matches the lining in my Little Swift. If you read my Little Swift review, you’ll remember I was torn between choosing the Vulcana hemp/recycled rubber or the cork version of that bag. I selected the hemp bag, and thought I’d order the cork wallet so I could see what that fabric was like. I didn’t consider the Dyneema because I thought it would “disappear” inside my bag.

Butch’s wallet looks “lumpy” compared to the cork wallet in the above photo. When empty, both wallets lay flat. Both wallets were photographed “fully loaded”, and his wallet has roughly twice the cards in it. The Dyneema fabric isn’t stretchy by any means, but the wallet is flexible enough to mold around the contents.

The cork wallet measures about 5.75″ wide X 3.8″ tall X 0.25″ thick and weighs 0.7 oz when empty. It closes with a plastic zipper along the top front. A Tom Bihn logo ribbon is sewn into the zipper seam. The edges are bound with a very sturdy-looking fabric.

One of the top corners has a plastic clip that’s used to attach the wallet to the O-rings sewn inside Tom Bihn bags. Although it works great clipped into my Little Swift, I usually carry it inside one of the large clear pockets inside my bag, like the one holding my Sony PRS-T1 reader seen in this picture.

It’s called an organizer wallet because of the two Ultrasuede dividers found inside. They are cut with “tabs” that extend above your cards so you can easily see how the cards are divided. The dividers in my cork wallet are blue and red, but the colors vary. The Dyneema wallet has light gray and red Ultrasuede dividers.

Here’s my wallet loaded up with my overflow cards. You can clearly see the Ultrasuede dividers inside. I don’t carry my driver’s license in this wallet, but Butch does (see lead photo in the review). The Urethane front is clear enough that you can present your license for an ID check without having to remove it from the wallet.

I have 12 cards and a couple of Levenger wallet-sized note cards in my Clear Organizer Wallet, and it’s barely 0.5″ thick. Butch’s wallet has 27 cards inside (6 paper, 21 thick, plastic cards) and is about 1″ thick.

As I mentioned, I carry mine inside my purse, but Butch carries his Clear Organizer Wallet in his pants pocket. He always used to carry his wallets in his back pocket. Always having a wallet in that pocket made the fabric wear faster, and sitting on it caused him back and hip pain. He didn’t like to carry his normal wallet in his front pocket, but he always carries his Tom Bihn Wallet in a front pocket. The thinner profile of the Clear Organizer Wallet looks nicer in a front pocket than the leather brick does. And not sitting on his wallet all day has greatly reduced the pain in Butch’s back.

Here’s a closer look at the cork. I’ve seen cork tiles before. They’re thin and flexible, but they can be broken. I was a bit worried about the structure and strength of the cork used in Tom Bihn bags. There’s an article in the Tom Bihn blog that shows a cork bag after five years of daily use; the bag looks in great shape, so I decided I’d risk buying the cork wallet.

The cork has a matte surface and a vaguely woodgrain-like appearance. (Cork does come from trees.) It has a mostly smooth texture, but you can feel a few very low “ridges” in the surface.

It appears the cork “fabric” structure is similar to a vinyl fabric. Inside the wallet, you see the woven backing for the cork. It seems that a thin layer of cork is adhered to a fabric backing. I’m sure this fabric is there to add strength and to stabilize the structure of the cork layer.

By the way, the cork bag has absolutely no smell that I can detect. And I have a sensitive sniffer. I used to be called “the canary” at work – as in the canary in the coal mine.

Both Butch and I love our Tom Bihn Clear Organizer Wallets. Mine fits easily in my bag, and his makes a great front-pocket wallet. Both wallets are so lightweight that they don’t seem to be any heavier than the cards themselves. At $15, they are an inexpensive, sturdy, convenient alternative to traditional leather wallets. If our previous experiences with Tom Bihn products are an indication, we can expect years of use from these Clear Organizer Wallets.

Here’s another, the Trifold from Fabric Horse, a small company that came out of the bike culture scene. All of their products are hand-made in the USA from sturdy materials. The Trifold is one of several models in Fabric Horse’s wallet line. It is made from waxed canvas and vinyl and features the standard bill pocket and card slots, but also a zipper pocket and a small notebook and a snap closure to round it out. I dig it. A nice combo of features. Available in several colors, $48 each. Also available are the longer Trifold Luxe ($58), the smaller Seat Belt Wallet ($18) and an iPhone / iPod Pouch ($30) with belt straps. Other cool stuff too, like Utility Belts. Give Fabric Horse a look.

Most of the pictures in this review, including the top photo, can be clicked for an enlarged view.

Urban Tool identifies these as Wallet 1 (smallest), Wallet 2 (medium), and Wallet 3 (largest). Wallet 1 measures about 4.25″ X 3.5″ X 0.85″ thick; it weighs about 1 ounce. Wallet 2 is about 5.0″ X 4.1″ X 0.85″ thick; it weighs about 1.7 ounces. Wallet 3 is about 7.8″ X 3.75″ X 0.85″ thick; it weighs about 1.9 ounces.

The wallets are plain on the outside except for the metal Urban Tool badge located at a corner. The wallets are made of either plastic coated 100% cotton denim (the two dark wallets) or 100% metallic PVC (the green one). There are no pockets on the exterior of the wallets. The two cotton wallets have a plastic coating on the fabric that should make it a bit more water resistant. All three wallets have a very strong petrochemical smell that simply doesn’t go away. I’m not sure it’s even less noticeable after two weeks than it was when I first removed them from their zippered plastic shipping bags. It’s a very unpleasant smell.

Each wallet comes in a variety of colors. I received Wallet 1 and Wallet 3 in Denim Titanium and Wallet 2 in Peppermint PVC.

The back of the medium and the large wallets have little ribbon tabs sewn into the seam. You can clip a carabiner here to hold your keys. Wallet 3 comes with a carabiner that is embossed with the Urban Tool name and fitted with an Urban Tool ribbon tag. Wallet 2 doesn’t come with a carabiner.

Inside, the wallets have a logo ribbon sewn onto one of the inside pockets. They also have a care tag that says the wallets aren’t washable nor dry-cleanable.

All three wallets zip closed. The zippers are the water-resistant style that look like they were installed backwards with the teeth inside the wallet. The outside has a plastic coating to prevent water from soaking through. This should be sufficient to get you from the car to the house when it’s raining, but don’t think about swimming with the wallet in your pocket. All three zippers have plastic teeth and metal pulls. The zippers and pulls coordinate with the wallets’ colors.

Wallet 1 is very small, with just enough room for a little money and a few cards. I found I could put a couple of cards in each of the outermost slots. It was a tight fit getting the cards in there, and I found I had to try to bend the zipper away from the corner to get the cards out. There’s a closed-bottom pouch sewn into the gusset that holds change. The two pockets between the change pouch and the outer pockets can hold a couple more cards or some receipts. This wallet should fit easily into your pockets or your purse. Other than the smell, you’ll hardly notice you have it with you.

Wallet 2 is much roomier inside. The pockets are longer than those in Wallet 1, and the cards are easier to get in and out. There are three slots on each side. The lower two are sized to hold cards and licenses, and the uppermost two are deep enough to hold some folded bills. The coin pouch is zippered in this wallet. The gusseting keeps things from falling out as you open the wallet, and it also forms a couple of extra pockets to hold more cards, receipts, or the like. This wallet isn’t big enough to hold my cellphone.

Wallet 3 is big enough to hold my iPhone 4, plus there’s room for a checkbook (if you still use them). There is a deep, full-length pocket that can hold cash along each side. There are also four slots for cards on each side. The zippered coin purse is sewn into the gusset, and there’s plenty of room on each side for receipts, papers, a cellphone, checkbook, or the like. With the included carabiner to attach your keys, you’ll have everything you need for errands. It’s probably too big to fit in pants’ pockets, and some men may not like the shape because it looks like a lot of women’s wallets.

The Urban Tool Wallets are well-built and sturdy, so they should be able to carry your cards, cash, an even a cellphone in Wallet 3. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, so men and women should be able to find one to fit their needs. The only negative I see with these wallets is the strong, unpleasant smell. Hopefully it will eventually dissipate.

When I find something that I like, I tend to use it for a long time. Six years ago I had the opportunity to review a wallet from Waterfield and I’ve been using that the same wallet ever since. I’ve had the habit of zipping my iPhone inside it for carry convenience. Waterfield must have spy cams following me because they had the same idea, only better. They’ve created the iPhone Wallet which has a special see through area that will hold your phone and still allows access to the display. Let’s take a look.

Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

The design of the iPhone Wallet is very similar to Waterfield’s original wallet. The biggest change is the see through window on one side that is made of a clear vinyl material.

The iPhone wallet is available in Black or Brown. I was sent the Brown version and I love it. It’s the type of leather that only looks better as it’s used and collects scuffs and scratches.

The contents of the wallet are kept protected by a sturdy locking zipper. I can confirm that the zippers used in Waterfield’s products are top quality. I’ve never had one break or otherwise fail to function properly.

As you can see, the stitching is evenly spaced and blends in with the color of the leather.

The interior of the wallet has 2 canvas card slots sewn into the right side (as pictured above). The back slot can hold a quite a few cards. I have been carrying 8 plastic credit cards and 8 business cards with some room to spare. The front card slot is a bit tighter and is best used for 2 or 3 most used cards.

I keep my folded dollars in front of the card slots, but behind the ultrasuede divider.

Your iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S with or without a bumper case can then be placed in front of the rigid divider. The ultrasuede protects your phone from scratches and separates it from the rest of the items in your wallet.

Then all you have to do is zip the whole thing up and you’re ready to go. You will be able to see and interact with your phone through the plastic window. I was really surprised that my taps and swipes work through a layer of plastic, but they do. You can even send text messages, answer calls, listen to voicemails and give Siri commands while the phone is zipped up in the wallet. Nice!

The plastic window is holding up just fine after being stowed and unstowed in jacket pockets and gear bags. I was a little worried that it would scratch easily but so far it seems fine.

I’ve been using this wallet for a couple of weeks and don’t have any complaints. Granted, with your phone in this wallet, it is kind of bulky. But the convenience of being able to carry one item in your hand or jacket pocket instead of two makes the extra bulk worth it in my opinion. I think Waterfield has another winning product, which I’ll be using for years to come.

If you own a Flipside 2X wallet, can now add some additional card storage to your favorite currency holder. The FlipsideKick is a snap on holder that will securely hold 3 standard plastic credit cards or 6 business cards (or a combination of both) on the outside the wallet for instant access. Let’s take a closer look.

Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

All Flipside 2X wallets come with a thin profile Polycarbonate plastic clip on the outside that is designed to hold a couple business cards or thin folded receipts. It doesn’t work well for plastic cards though. That’s where the FlipsideKick comes in…

Just unsnap the original card holder and replace it with the FlipsideKick.

The FlipsideKick has two wrap around arms that click into place over the wallet.

At this time, the FlipsideKick is only available in Black.

Once installed, the FlipsideKick does add some extra bulk to your wallet, but not so much that you’ll really notice a difference. The edges are rounded and there is nothing to catch on your pants pocket if you store the wallet there.

The cards slide in from the top and are held in place by the center tab that lightly presses down on the cards. You can even use this holder for one card and it won’t fall out. I tried shaking wallet with much vigor and the card didn’t budge.

Although the FlipsideKick can hold 3 credit cards with raised numbers, I found that doing so is a tight fit. It works better if at least one of the cards is smooth like a driver’s license.

Or you can use it to hold 6 business cards.

To remove the cards, you just slide them out of the slot by sliding up from the bottom.

The FlipsideKick is a simple way to add addition card storage to the 2X wallet. It’s handy to keep your most used credit card on top so that you can easily access it when needed. Also, since the Flipside 2X wallet shields RFID signals, the FlipsideKick will allow you to use your RFID cards without having to open the wallet.

New Zealand’s Nutshell Corporation makes a series of cases for handheld devices called “Tuff-as-Nuts”. Gadgeteer Mike Reigel verified that the name was appropriate back in 2003. They combine that reputation with an interesting fastener in a tough wallet case for your smartphone.

The main body of the case is a nice piece of gorgeous leather with a rich but subtle smell. The inside is a soft fabric that is Velcro compatible. There is a magnetic tab, and pockets on the opposite side for bills, cards, etc. The logo and other info is embossed on the pockets and does not appear anywhere outside.

Wallet case, with my phone inside

Wallet with my phone inside, showing pockets and logo

The big difference in this case is a ‘Micro-fine Velcro Pad’. This interesting stuff features a self-adhesive pad of the ‘hook side’ that is dang near flat! The barely there hooks snag securely into the soft fabric lining the case- it almost looks like magic! Try as I might, I could not really do justice to it with a photo.

Micro-fine Velcro Pads (2 included)

This pad barely adds anything to the back of the phone- even as a pocket-carryin’ guy, the pad rarely caught or interfered, or even felt odd at any time. Yet, it holds very securely in the case. I like this stuff well enough that I am searching for a source for some of my own projects. (I believe it is this stuff- Velcro Ultra Mate.)

OK, so… tough- check. Good looking- check. Interesting element with the thin Velcro- check. How is it in use?

Obviously my experience with the Samsung Epic will be different than your experience with your phone, but I found this wallet to be a bit chunky.

Wallet in use, end view- note the angle of the magnetic tab

My phone is thick enough that the magnetic tab does not lay flat on the cover. If I press down by the tab…

POP! The tab just pops off. It would be fine with a thinner phone, but the Epic is just pushes the boundaries a bit. In fact, I dislike how the Epic fits in most cases- it is already a tad thick and the case just makes it worse.

Beside this rather minor issue (even with the so-so fit, it still works fine), this is a terrific case- well-made, protective, and incredibly durable… although whether it is worth $59.95 is up to you.

For those of you that read my reviews, you’ve probably seen me mention the fact that I’ve been carrying a WaterField wallet for the past 5 years. I’ve loved the shape, and style and that it has a zipper that keeps the contents from falling out. On numerous occasions, I’ve zipped my iPhone inside so that I would only need to carry one thing in my hand as I went out to lunch or shopping. The only thing missing has been a way to see and interact with my phone while it was housed in the wallet. WaterField just solved that problem and I’m really excited about it. Their new iPhone Wallet takes their original design and adds a special iPhone 3G, 4, 4S section with a play through window so that you can see an alarm or respond to a text message. Now you can protect your cash, credit cards and iPhone in one zip up leather wallet. Offered in Black or Brown, the iPhone wallet will cost $39 and be available for shipping on 10/31.

The Xband looks like an easy to use alternative to a money clip. It’s similar to the Bandit Wallet that I reviewed last year, only infinitely better due to the X design. It’s a double elastic band that comes in Black, Grey or Tan. The cool thing is that you can unhook the top band while still allowing the bottom band to hold on to your cards and cash. Grab what you need and then stretch the top band back in place. The $5.99 price tag isn’t bad either. What do you think? Could this be your next minimalist wallet?

Ever been caught short needing a quick shave before that hot date or job interview? Perhaps this is the answer, the Carzor-Card credit card sized razor and mirror. The lubricating strip even comes in 5 scents: mint, sandalwood, lemon, ocean and orange. Certainly more convenient than trying to carry around a cartridge razor in your pocket. Is that a razor in your pocket or are you just happy to see me???

Available from Infmetry for $17

( Note I’m an old style DE shaver myself and do not condone the use of cartridge razors :p)

Awhile back Julie wrote about the Orpheus wallet, a wallet for guitar players. The company selling that wallet is currently out of business, awaiting a relaunch, but it seemed that from that article’s feedback the price ($107) was a bit much for the average gadgeteer. Whipping Post, makers of a gorgeous line of guitar cases, has recently released their own picker’s wallet. It’s a slimline, bare bones model, but is elegant in its simplicity. The wallet is full grain leather and holds three credit cards, has a cash compartment, clear-paneled driver’s license panel, and a stitched pocket for a guitar pick. Two colors are available, tan and dark brown, and can be purchased directly through Whipping Post for $30.

Today’s contribution is the Zeroz Wallet. Their motto is Less Wallet, More Cool. Basically, the Zeroz is a card holder with a stretchy cash strap secured to one side. They are available in 4 different thickness to accommodate more or less cards. I can’t really tell from the website how you retrieve the cards from the wallet though. I guess you just poke your finger in one side to push them out. The Zeroz wallets are available in several colors and designs and are priced from $26-$30. If there’s anyone out there that happens to own one, please let us know what you think.

For those times when you have a plate of yummy food in front of you, but no eating utensils in sight, you can pull out this credit card sized set of dining tools. It’s questionable how well they will work… especially the spoon, which looks more like a spatula. The Credit Card Cutlery is available from Cooper Hewitt Museum Shop for $10. What do you think, is this a worthy addition to your EDC (every day carry)?

Is your iPhone 4 part of your essential EDC (Everyday Carry) items? Are you a minimalist? If the answer is yet, they have a look at the Speck CandyShell Card case. Speck took their CandyShell case for the iPhone 4 and added a rubberized slot on the backside for up to three credit card-sized items. Slide them in, then back out with the thumb release. Simple concept, but potentially pretty useful if you are going out and just want to grab your iPhone, ID and maybe a credit card or two. Available for both AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4, each in three color schemes: NightDrive Grey (pictured), GrapeEscape Purple, and MoonSuit White, each $39.95. How about it: Would anyone out there use this to replace their wallet?

Early this year, I reviewed the Col. Littleton No. 50 Wallet for the iPhone which combined a leather sleeve to hold the iPhone, with a minimalist wallet. I loved the simplicity and utility of that wallet, so I was equally interested in trying out one of their front pocket wallets when they offered to send me one.

Note: The images in this review are clickable. Click to see a larger view.

Col. Littleton offers two styles of front pocket wallets. One with a flap and one without. Both are made from American vegetable-tanned steer hide that has been dry milled to give it a buttery soft feel.

The wallets are available in brown, black and alligator (for a substantially higher price). I was sent the brown version of the front pocket wallets.

They are 3 3/4″ x 3″, have stitched and burnished edges, and can be personalized on the front with 3 initials for an additional $8.

On the back is the standard Col. Littleton ‘brand’ stamp.

Folded money is stored under the front flap and credit cards are stored in the pocket behind it. You can think of the front pocket wallet sort of like a money clip, but without the clip or any other hardware for that matter.

You can’t stuff a lot of money or cards in these wallets, which is the whole point of them. I have found that they work best when using 10 or less folded bills and 3 or 4 plastic credit cards.

The leather will stretch, so you could stuff more in the wallet, but then it would feel pretty uncomfortable when carried in your front pocket.

Even though the top slot is open on 2 sides, currency stays put. But if you want more security, you can opt for the version of the front pocket wallet with the flap.

You use it exactly like the other version except that you can tuck the flap under the money holder.

The flap makes the wallet a tiny bit bulkier, but not by much.

Both of these wallets are made very well. The leather is gorgeous and the stitching is perfect and even. Like other Col. Littleton products that I’ve reviewed, I can find no defects in workmanship or materials.

I am always looking for a nice minimalist wallet to use when I don’t want to carry a bag. These front pocket wallets from Col. Littleton work very well. Accessing the contents of the wallet is easy as long as you don’t over stuff it. I have found that I can remove inner bills without having to remove the entire folded packet of money. The same goes for accessing credit cards. You can pull the cards out slightly and easily sift through them without having to remove all of them to get to the one you want. My system is to carry a $20, $10, $5 and 5 $1 bills along with my driver’s license, a credit card and health insurance card.

Even though these are called front pocket wallets, I don’t carry them in my front pocket… My jeans are usually too snug or the front pocket too small to make that very comfortable. I either put the wallet in my back pocket, cargo pants leg pocket or jacket pocket.

In the past I’ve used a very small binder clip as my travel wallet, but the Col. Littleton Front Pocket Wallet has replaced that DIY method with something that looks much nicer and is a lot easier to use. Try as I might, I can’t really think of anything that needs improvement with these wallets. They are my new favorite minimalist wallets. What is yours?
