Love Ukelele

Surely that’s a small market , what are the chances ?

From Amidio comes the Futulele, an upcoming Ukulele synthesizer for iOS. With a special case that holds either an iPad or an iPhone and using Bluetooth connectivity, you can strum to your hearts content. Each song can have up to 12 chords in it, and chord sets can be changed on the fly. Amidio is currently looking for manufacturers to assist in producing the Futulele cases, preferably with embedded speakers.

Expected to be released in early April and should be optimised for the Ipad 3.

You can see the video of that performance here. I love seeing stuff like this. It makes me want to try every iPad music app in the App Store and try to create my own songs. Check the notes on the YouTube video for a list of the apps that they used. Hmmm, I just had an idea for our family Christmas party. I wonder if I can talk Jeanne into performing a song with me on my iPad, iPhone(s) and an iPod Touch.

Like most people in the 21st century, I own a few types of mp3 players including a few from the iPod line, the iPad, a few from Sony, and the many other electronics that have the mp3 function built-in like cell phones. I was looking for a cheap basic mp3 player. The Green House Kana Micro MP3 Player is like the iPod Shuffle but without the hassle of iTunes.

Inside the box, you’ll find the mp3 player, basic headphones, and Japanese instructions since it’s an imported item.

The Kana Micro MP3 Player is shaped like a usb flash drive.

There is a single button on one side to power it on and off. Two buttons on the other side for volume control and playback controls.

Headphone jack on one end. It even has a loop hole so you can attach it to your keys or even use it as a phone charm!

And on the USB end is a slot for a micro SD card. The Kana Micro MP3 Player doesn’t come with any memory at all. It uses micro SD cards and I’m sure everyone has many of those laying around from all their accumulated tech over the years. It accepts micro SDHC as well up to 32GB. This player supports the .mp3 and .wma format. It also has a 2 hour built-in battery that charges from the USB slot. And of course you can use this MP3 Player as an USB flash drive to store documents and files.

Putting the music on the player is as simple as it can get. 1) Put the micro SD card in the slot. 2) Plug it into the computer. 3) Drag and drop your music into the drive. 4) Done.

It supports nested folders so you can organize your music however you like. There is no playlist support. It’s just a basic mp3 player and I like it for its simplicity.

And the best thing is the price. It only costs $15.20 from Strapya-World. It also comes in 8 different colors.

The SpiderCapo is the only guitar capo that lets you capo each string individually allowing you to create all sorts of tunings and even play behind the capo. The SpiderCapo costs $29.95 and is also available in a mini version that works with Banjos and Ukuleles.

The clamp enables you to easily use any of the more than 500 music/guitar apps available for smart mobile devices, such as: video lessons, lyrics teleprompters, audio recorders, metronomes, tabs display, and instrument tuners. Compatible with any guitar (and maybe ukuleles, banjos and more), it does not affect playing or tuning, and accommodates the iPhone, iPod touch, PSP, iTab, and others. While surfing around for dulcimer info, I happened upon the Pointless Pick. It’s a round pectrum with a handy raised grip ring in the center. Wow, why wasn’t this invented long ago? They are made in Michigan and available in 3 colors that signify their thickness. A trial pack with 3 of each size can be purchased for $10. I’m looking forward to trying them out. What is your favorite type of pick?

Some time ago, I saw an iTunes commercial where they demonstrated an app that could “listen” to a song and tell you what it is and who performs it. This app was just what I needed. No longer would I hear something on the radio that I liked but had no idea what it was or who performed it. To use this app, of course, your device has to have a microphone. I have a second generation iPod touch, so I didn’t have a built-in microphone. When Julie recently gave me the Arctic Cooling E361-WM earphones with built-in microphone to review, I realized I now had the tools I needed to finally find out what I’ve been missing! I went straight to iTunes and bought the SoundHound app from Melodis Corporation. (This app used to be called MiDoMi or MiDoMi SoundHound, as I recall.) So how does SoundHound work?

I added SoundHound to my iPod touch and spent about an hour playing around with it the first night. I scanned from radio station to station, stopping to let SoundHound listen to every song I found. To identify a song, you simply tap the orange “Tap Here” button, and hold the microphone close to the source for best results. In all, I used about 60-65 songs on the radio to test SoundHound. It found matches to almost every song, usually in 10 seconds or less. It found matches to a wide variety of genres – orchestral, classic rock, modern pop and hip-hop, country, and most things in between. There were three songs it didn’t identify – one religious song, and two easy-listening instrumentals.

If you have an iPod touch like me, you won’t always have an internet connection when you want to identify a song. That’s no problem with SoundHound. I turned off my wifi connection, and let SoundHound “hear” a song. The information was saved in memory until I had internet connectivity again, then SoundHound immediately identified the song.

The "play" icon indicates a snippet of the song is available, the "no" icon (circle with bar) means no snippet is available, and the small iPod icon means the song is already on your device.

Once a song is identified, you can save information about it to a history listing for later use, or you can click to buy it immediately from iTunes. There’s even an icon to notify you that you already have it on your device to prevent you from buying it again. If lyrics are available, you can see them as well.

SoundHound also can identify songs you sing or hum into the microphone. It was able to identify several songs I sang, including Christmas songs, Journey, and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. It didn’t get Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto when I hummed part of it. Guess I wasn’t orchestral enough to make it identifiable!

If you don’t want to hum, you can type in some lyrics, or you can say the name of the artist or the name of the song to get more information.

You can review the history of saved songs at any time, and you can see information about songs others are buying – what’s hot, what’s underplayed, and songs recently bought by others.

If you are listening to music on your device, SoundHound will show you album art for that song. You can see the lyrics, if available, or you can watch YouTube videos for the song.

SoundHound by Melodis is exactly what I’ve been looking for. No longer will I have to hope the DJ will say who performed that song I loved, nor will I have to drive myself crazy trying to remember a snippet of lyrics until I can get home to Google it. Apple should pay for SoundHound to be one of the standard apps shipped on the iPhone, iPad, and touch. I think it would pay for itself in no time in increased song sales from iTunes.

Note: When I reviewed this app, the iPad had not been released. There is now an iPad-specific app, but this review was done using the iPhone/iPod touch version.

When the application is first launched, you’re presented with a Black screen that can be tapped with your fingers to make music. As you tap the screen, individual keys will display across the top. Clicking the circular piano image in the upper Right corner will toggle between 3 unique onscreen piano keyboards.

There’s a spiral keyboard…

A circular keyboard…

And a more (or less) traditionally shaped horizontal keyboard. These keyboards can be re-sized by pinching and dragging gestures.

Just plunking around on the uniquely shaped keyboards is kind of fun (multi-touch allows you to press more than one key at a time like an actual piano), but if you don’t know how to play music in the first place, the plinking and plunking will sound pretty much like random plinking and plunking.

That’s where the Magic Piano application shines. Included is a song book of 20 classic tunes that you can play without any prior musical instruction. You’re probably thinking “yeah right, how the heck will I be able to do that?”

Have you ever played or seen Guitar Hero? Smule’s Magic Piano has a similar interface. As a song plays, little dots appear on the display. You tap your finger below the general location of the dots to play the songs.

There are even settings that you can activate that will allow you to tap anywhere on the display, so you can’t mess up.

It’s pretty fun to be able to play classic songs without any musical training. I do wish that there was a feature that you could use to hear the song so that you would know what it is supposed to sound like before trying to play it yourself. It would also be nice if there was a recording feature and a way to download new songs into the song book. With only 20 songs available, it can get boring quickly.

Like some of Smule’s other apps, you can listen to other people playing the Magic Piano all over the world. You can even do a duet.

Smule’s Magic Piano is a fun app for musical wannabes and at only 99 cents, you really can’t lose.

The pick isn’t sticky, but it sticks to your fingers so that you can relax your hand and play better. V-Picks are available in different styles (for guitar, bass, mandolin and dulcimer) and colors (even glow in the dark) and are priced between $4 – $20.

When I first discovered the TabToolKit iPhone App by Agile Partners I thought it was a very cool idea for guitar players who like to use tablature to learn new tunes. I quickly learned that this application isn’t just for guitar players. Ukulele players like myself, banjo players, piano players, etc will also love this app.

Tablature is an alternative to standard musical notation. But instead of showing notes and pitch, tablature shows exact finger positions on strings. For people that do not know how to read musical notation, tablature is much easier method for learning songs. TabToolKit allows you to download text, PDF, Guitar Pro and Power Tab tablature files from the internet directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch, giving you a way to view and even LISTEN to the music. That’s right, you can listen to the tab files (specifically Guitar Pro and Power Tab files) in real time through your device. As the song plays, a fretboard shows fingerings.

Want to learn to play the song on your piano instead of stringed instrument? No sweat, you can switch to the keyboard view which shows the pressed keys as the song plays.

You can also switch the playback sound to huge variety of instruments.

Other built in features include a metronome with many sounds choices and the ability to slow down or speed up the playback speed.

Uploading the tab files to your iPhone or Touch is very easy. You can either search google on your desktop computer for files, download them and then upload them using Wifi…

…by typing in the specified IP address into your desktop browser. Doing so will open an upload interface that will install the files on your device.

Or you can use the built in browser feature to find tab files directly from your handheld. I prefer using the desktop method just because it’s faster to upload more than one file at a time.

Installed tab files are then displayed in an organized list, making it easy to find what you’re looking for.

The only thing missing is the ability to create your own tab files from scratch, but even so TabToolKit is one of those apps that make the iPhone so great. It’s easy to use and is perfect for seasoned musicians as well as people just starting out learning to play.

Agile Partners also offers an additional application called GuitarToolKit that has a chromatic tuner, metronome, scales reference and chord library for Guitars (6 and 12 string), Bass, Banjo, Mandolin and Ukulele. I think it would be nice to add these same features into TabToolKit making one full featured application. Yes, I’m greedy Either way, both of these apps are very well done and definitely worth the price.

Listeners rate and comment on the music they hear, helping to determine which riffs make the Top 25. Riffs are “short repeated melodic phrases,” usually lasting no more than twenty seconds – like a musical “tweet”. All instruments and musical styles are welcome and musicians can record original riffs on their iPhone/iTouch with any instrument. Even if you don’t have an instrument to record a riff, you can rate and comment on the riffs you hear, browsing by instrument, genre or musician. This app is priced at $1.99.

This device is an audio controller that you can use with your computer. It consists of an 8-by-8 panel of buttons. Each button is used to launch an audio event – a sound sample, a rhythm, melody loop, etc. Start a rhythm from the library of provided samples, then layer additional sounds on top, edit to taste and bingo, you’ve created a song. You can even plug a microphone into your computer to add live vocals or other sound sources. Launchpad by Novation sells for just $199 and is available at fine music retailers everywhere.

There is a new iPhone app by Agile Partners that has hit the iTunes store and it’s called Star6. Star6 is a program that let’s you act like a DJ/musician. You can sample songs, add some rhythms and change things like pitch and speed simply by tilting your iPhone forward and back.

You should know that I’m not a teenager or even a young adult but playing with the different controls was fun. I can’t imagine using it in public and rocking back and forth like I’m suffering from a seizure but in the safety and comfort of my own home or maybe even with friends it might be fun.

It comes with lots of free samples and you can download more from the website. Probably one of the best features for all of you up and coming musicians is the ability to record your masterpiece and upload it to the site. I won’t be quitting my day job but if you like music and have some rockin rhythm I think you’ll enjoy Star6.
