The Apple iPod nano is a popular gadget not only because it makes a very portable music player, but because it can also replace your wrist watch by using any one of the many straps designed for it. Now those of you that want to go old school can turn your nano into a very stylish pocketwatch with the iPocketWatch case. The iPW offers square or round fascias to compliment your favorite watch face. I have always been a fan of pocket watches, so I was really excited when I first saw this new nano case. I was disappointed when I learned that it is not yet available for purchase. The iPocketWatch is currently soliciting financial help through Pozible, an Australian based crowd funding site like Kickstarter. Their project just started, so if you want this case to see the light of day, you might want consider helping fund it.

Turning your 6th generation Apple iPod nano into a wristwatch is as simple as buying one of the many wrist band accessories that are currently available. The infuse watchband from Frontal Concepts is the second nano watchband I’ve had the opportunity to review. Let’s take a look.

The infuse watchband is comprised of two main parts. The watchband, which is made of a soft flexible silicone and the polycarbonate wristlock mount plate for the nano. There’s also the band buckle, which is made of brushed stainless steel. The infuse is available in Black, White and Brown. As you can see, I was sent the Brown version to review.

The wristlock has 2 parts. The mount for the nano and the locking pin.

The nano easily slides on to the mount.

And then the locking pin slides under the nano clip to snap into place.

I noticed pretty quickly that the lock doesn’t really ‘lock’ into place very securely. It’s pretty easy to slide the nano partially off the mount if you happen to bang the edge of the nano or rub against something. It’s doubtful that the nano would completely come off the band, but I’m guessing that the locking pin could fall off and get lost.

The infuse watchband doesn’t add much weight or bulk to the nano.

It’s also comfortable to wear and has 10 sizing adjustments so that even people with small wrists can wear one.

Although the infuse watchband looks nice and is easy to use with the nano, I’m not overly impressed with it due to the face that it doesn’t attach very securely. It might not be that big of a deal if you’re not a very active person, but if you want a watchband so that you can work out with the nano, hike, etc., I might choose a different one than the current version of the infuse.

You know how the latest generation iPod Nano is small enough to resemble the face of a watch? Several manufacturers have noticed this too, but Hex Designs has developed probably the coolest looking and most functional iPod Nano watch band so far. It’s a simple silicone band that is designed for the Nano to just pop right in and out. It is available in nine different colors and features integrated Nano controls and audio port cover with inline orientation. Orders will not ship until December 20th–not a bad last-minute stocking stuffer for $24.95.

Today Apple announced 4 updated products. The iPod shuffle, AppleTV, iPod touch, and iPod nano. Of the bunch, the nano is the one that I want to try the most. I don’t need one, that’s for sure, but I can’t help but want one! It’s a matchboxed sized multi-touch music player. Who wouldn’t want one? They are available in 8 or 16GB capacities, 7 colors and even have a clip. Can you imagine running little apps on this puppy? Two things to be aware of though… this version of the nano doesn’t have a camera and apparently can’t play video. Kind of a bummer… but I still want one They will ship in 1 week and will set you back $149 – $179 depending on the capacity.

The next piece in my work out puzzle was an armband for my iPod Nano. I still have a 3rd generation Nano so I needed one to fit that. It needed to support the Nike + iPod kit, fit my arm and deal well with sweat. I owned the Nike arm band for my old first generation Nano, but it felt tight, and did not keep the Nano as dry as I would like. I never had a failure, but it worried me.

The Tuneband is a two-piece system. One part is the band, the other is the silicone sleeve for the iPod. In fact, in the packaging, they include an ad for the RunWallet that uses the same band.

Also included is a screen protector for the Nano. Initially I chose to not install it on my Nano. Assembly was pretty easy. First you thread the band through the belt loops (fuzzy side towards the Nano), then slide in the Nano and finally plug in the transmitter for the Nike + iPod kit.

Later I decided to install the screen protector. They do a lot to make it as easy as possible, but I always find getting them on right to be a pain.

The silicone case fits firmly over the iPod, and the transmitter (or sync cable after a run) has no problem connecting and disconnecting from the Nano. Here is shot of the bottom of the Nano. The hold button (left) and headphone jack (right) are both easily accessible.

I wanted to use it a few times before reviewing, and I have run with it 5 times now. I was concerned with how the band attached to the case. Since the strap enters the case, I was afraid it would serve as a conduit for moisture. So far I have no issues with it. It appears to keep my Nano safe and dry. In addition, the band is very comfortable on my arm.

I am concerned about rain, however. The front and bottom of the case are open, so it will not provide any protection if I run in the rain. I am not sure how much moisture protection the screen saver would provide, and it certainly will not help with the connections at the bottom.

Despite that, I am very happy with the purchase, and feel comfortable running with the Tuneband.

They have an integrated tapLINE control technology that allows users to play/pause, adjust volume, skip tracks, navigate playlists, record voice memos, activate the voice control feature, and answer/end calls without having to take their iPod or iPhone out of their pocket or bag. This functionality is particularly useful for iPod shuffle Gen 3 users given that model’s lack of control buttons. The IDR350Ms also give users a chance to customize their earphones with six different interchangeable color caps to match their mood or outfit.

They sent me two samples to review and here are my results.

This slider case is made of anodized aluminum and is available in Brushed Silver, Brushed Black, Brushed Red and Brushed Purple.

The case is comprised of two parts. A top half and a bottom half. The top half has a large circular cutout for the touch wheel and a poly-carbonate window over the display.

The bottom half of the slider case is lined in EVA foam. You can also see the attachment point for the optional (free) lanyard.

The nano slides into the bottom section of the slider case and then the top half slides over it, snapping securely in place.

As you can see, the bottom of the nano is completely open, allowing easy access to the headphone jack and sync port. I had no issues docking the nano in the Griffin Simplifi USB Dock (I don’t use the nano sized adapter though…).

The top edge has access to the hold switch.

The slider case adds very little bulk / weight to your nano. All edges are smooth and I have had no issues seeing the display through the plastic window.

This case will protect your nano from scratches and dings. It is easy to use and looks nice (if the color you purchase does not clash with the color of your nano). That said, I did find one ‘problem’ with both samples that were sent to me.

The poly-carbonate window has a protective plastic covering over both sides. No big deal right? Just peel it off and go about your merry iTunes way… Well yeah, you would think so. But the problem is that on both of my sample cases, the covering on the top side had its edges stuck between the plastic and the metal surrounding it. So, it tore when I tried to peel it off, leaving pieces stuck in the seams. I’ve tried to pull them out, but no luck… It looks pretty crappy. I thought I might be able to pop out the window, but it’s glued in. Garrrrrrr… I would have let this issue slip if it had only happened on one of the samples, but since it was two, they definitely need to look into this problem.

Along with being an avid tech-guy, I am also a die-hard sports person as well.
I enjoy exercising or working out daily; to including running, weight lifting,
tennis, basketball, etc. When I workout, running and weight lifting in particular,
I prefer listening to music (to get me through the pain and suffering). iStik
promises a better way to have your music with you while working out. The company
and product names are the same. iStik (the company) currently only produces
two iStik cases, one for the 2nd generation Nano and one for the <a href="http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/apple_ipod_nano_fatty_" title="Apple iPod nano "Fatty" - The Gadgeteer">3rd generation
Nano. But according to their website, they are developing iStik cases for other
mp3 players as well; to include the iPod Touch and iPhone.

The feature that makes the iStik unique is the Neodymium (aka, rare-Earth)
magnets embedded in the back of the case and back plate. The magnets sandwich
the material of your clothing, allowing you to securely place your iPod Nano
anywhere on your outfit.

The iStik encases your iPod Nano within a transparent, Lexan polyarbonate housing.

The case is nicely made and is well fitted for the Nano. The two pieces of
the case click together and once connected will not come apart easily. It would
take a significant impact or force to have the case release the Nano accidentally.

The only two parts of the Nano that are exposed are the scroll wheel and base of the iPod
(lock switch, connector port, and earplug hole). These openings allow for easy access
to the scroll wheel and the ability to connect the sync cable or NikePlus dongle
to the base of the Nano.

The Neodymium magnets are very strong and once the case and backing are together
it takes a good amount of force to separate them. The magnets are so powerful,
iStik warns you to keep them away from hard drives and pacemakers. Since the
Nano is a solidstate device, magnetic fields should not be an issue.

Once in place, the Nano stays on your clothing reasonably securely. However, it
flops around quite a bit while running. No matter where on my shirt I placed
the Nano it continually moved around.

It moved much less when I placed it on my
shorts. I found that I liked the iStik/Nano far better on my shorts for both running and
weight lifting.

Overall, iStik, Inc. has developed a relatively innovative case design. The
iStik allows you to securely place your iPod Nano anywhere on your clothing
while working out or just puttering around the house. For those Nano owners
who want easy access to their iPod or their iPod slips out of your pocket while working out, you
should consider the iStik.

I have used many well-made tech-toy cases from around the world over the years. The Corsa for the iPod Touch and Sonata for the Nano are the first cases by Orbino I have ever tried. If first impressions are as important in cases as it in the real world, Orbino leaves most others behind.

Orbino’s initial presentation is excellent. The cases came in sturdy, well constructed boxes.

Once the box top is removed, you are presented with a soft monogrammed cloth that surrounds and protects your handmade case. The velvet soft material could easily be used as a cleaning/polishing cloth.

Orbino Corsa iPod Touch Case

I have tried several Beyza pouches and the Vaja i-volution Top Holster to protect and transport my iPod Touch during my travels. The Orbino Corsa is the first open-faced case I have tried. It is nice combination of both types of cases; providing constant protection while not having to deal with the screen cover. Obviously, the lack of flip cover does mean less protection for the screen.

The Touch easily slides into the form fitting case from the top, adding little bulk to the device. The fine Italian leather
has lacquered edging and is hand-stitched. The Old-World craftsmanship is distinctive and very well done.

Once inserted into the case, the Touch is held in by a leather strap that snaps to the back. The ‘Home’ button is recessed and takes a little getting use to if you normally have direct access to the face of your Touch.

The sides of the case are hand stitched to the back, providing good protection to the sides of the Touch. The upper 15% of the device is exposed on the sides and top of the case.

Both the power button and WiFi antenna are exposed making it easy to turn the Touch on & off.

The bottom is very well protected while still allowing access to the earphone jack and sync connector. And while the sync cable fits into the opening with ease, the opening for the earphone jack initially took a bit of convincing. But with use has become easier to insert. Initially the edges around the screen were not flush with the front of the Touch. Over time the edges have layed down as the case has broken in.

The hand stitching is very nice indeed. Once again, the old world styling is a nice change.

Orbino includes a well engineered, removable belt clip, crafted in Florence and is definitely the best belt clip of any case I have ever had. It enables you to wear it either horizontally or vertically. Orbino also includes a decent screen protector that slides between the device and case.

Corsa Review Summary:

Product Requirements:
Apple iPod Touch

Manufacturer: Orbino

Price: Starting at $99

Pros:
- Quality leather
– Old world
craftsmanship
– Hand stitched
– Lacquered edging
– Perfectly fitted for the Touch
– Includes screen protector
– Good protection
– Does not add bulk to the device
- Very nicely engineered belt clip

Cons:
- Expensive
- Initially some of the edges do not sit flush against the device

Sonata 3G iPod Nano Case

Like the Corsa, the Old World charm and craftsmanship are the first thing you notice about the Orbino Sonata case for the <a href="http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/apple_ipod_nano_fatty_" title="The Gadgeteer - Apple iPod nano "Fatty"">third generation iPod Nano.

The Sonata has a tighter fit than the Corsa, but has loosened with time. However, it does take a good bit of force to remove the Nano from the case. The screen and scroll wheel have cutouts for easy viewing and control of the device.

The Sonata has a loop for attaching a lanyard. I typically do not wear my iPods around my neck but for those who do, the lanyard that Orbino includes with the case is the nicest one I have seen.

The leather wraps around sides of the Nano and is hand stitched into place. The edges are lacquered and nicely finished.

The leather wraps around the top of the Nano as well. Overall, the sides and top are very well protected. Only a small amount of the upper corners of the device are exposed.

The bottom of the Nano is completely exposed. Allowing easy access to the hold button, sync connector, and earphone jack but provides little to no protection to the bottom.

The only case I have ever used with my 3G Nano is the Incipio slipper case or more typically, no case at all. I will be using the Orbino Sonata for the foreseeable future. I like how it fits, access to the Nano’s controls, connector, and styling.

At $69 and $99, the Sonata and Corsa are definitely more expensive than most other cases out there (to include Vaja) but if you are looking for a stylish, distinctively crafted case I do recommend considering Orbino.

Even though the iPod is the most popular MP3 player, each person’s iPod is unique on the inside. The iPod’s clean exterior design makes it another perfect canvas for customization.

Recently, there has been a trend towards technology accessories that are made with more exotic fabrics and designs. When I saw Northshore International’s Kaftan line of iPod and Nano cases, woven using classic Turkish motifs, I decided to get a closer look.

Initial impressions

Northshore International named this line “Kaftan” after the precious garment worn by Sultans and other dignitaries during the Ottoman Empire. From the moment I opened the package, I was impressed with the detail and quality of the cases.

Detailed in one of seven traditional patterns, the Kaftan’s outside fabric is custom woven in Turkey using a richly colored senetic (a washable cotton/nylon blend).

For my review, I tested two cases: The NR1 Nano case, which is adorned with a delicate floral embroidery pattern reminiscent of an illuminated manuscript. In contrast, the V030 iPod case is a classical “oriental rug” pattern that is whimsical, yet still professional.

The interior of both cases are lined with a semi-ridged black leather with cutouts for the screen and click wheel. On the V030 case, the Kaftan’s sides are made of black elastic so that it can accommodate a variety of widths. The NR1 has leather-trimmed sides as Nanos do not have much width variance.

The cutouts on the full-sized case are shaped so that the case can be used with the click wheels for either 4th and 5th generation iPods.

Both cases also have a loops on the outside for a removable leather wrist strap.

Product Testing

One of the first things I noticed is each size case is designed differently to the individual aspects of each iPod. The full-size V030 case latches at the top with an opening for headphones, the NR1 case snaps together on the bottom, the location of the headphone jack.

The first time I put my 5g iPod into the case, I noticed a small amount of resistance, but the leather quickly loosened into a firm, but not tight fit around my iPod.

The Kaftan is not only beautiful it also provides moderate protection for the iPod, a bonus for someone as clumsy as myself. While carrying the Kaftan about by the wrist strap, I bumped into a few things. Each time, my iPod sustained no damage.

I’ve never owned a flip style iPod case for any length of time and this a great introduction. I love the designs available and the construction of the product is solid. Marco Polo would be glad to know there is still a market for eastern imports.

Price: $12.95 for the Nano case, $15.95 for the iPod case

This is the second Nano sports armband review I've done. The first review was on the Nike Sport Armband which has done an excellent job holding my Nano during my running. That being said, my initial impression of the Speck Active-Sport armband for the first generation Nano was that it was too big and bulky. But after using it several weeks it has grown on me enough to replace my Nike armband. An added bonus of the Speck armband is that it includes a sensor pouch to hold the Nike+ sensor.

This is the second Nano sports armband review I’ve done.

The Speck Active-Sport armband is well made and constructed of lightweight mesh material. The pocket that holds the Nano is constructed of a sturdy reflective material and is lined with a soft form-fitting sleeve. The armband itself is also reflective and held securely in-place by velcro.

It is specifically designed to safely hold the first generation iPod Nano during exercising (there is also a iPod video and second generation Nano armbands available from Speck). As with the Nike armband, I’d recommend this armband for running, cycling, hiking and the like but would not use it while weightlifting. The armband is not ideal for that type of arm movement.

The Nano slips into the top of the Speck armband where the form of the soft elastic inner lining holds it snugly in-place. The inner sleeve gathers at the bottom keeping the Nano from slipping out through the bottom. The opening at the bottom allows the Nike+ transmitter and earbuds plug to connect to the Nano. The screen protector is clear and does a good job at protecting the screen.

The inside of the armband is soft and comfortable during runs. I’m confident that the armband will stay on my arm and the Nano safely within during exercise. Unlike the Nike Sport, the Speck armband provides some protection from impact but probably not a stumble to the ground or a crash on a bike.

The sensor pouch attaches to the shoe and is held in place by Velcro. It weighs almost nothing and does not affect the weight of the shoe or your stride at all. The pouch is well made and looks like it could withstand all weather conditions.

The Speck Active-Sport Armband (plus sensor pouch) is $30 and available in the color seen here. The nicest thing about this combination is that it allows you to use a non-Nike+ shoe and still utilize the Nike+ sensor set.

The armband is well made and perfectly engineered for the tasks it was designed for. The only concern I have about the armband is how well it will hold up to being washed. That being said, I would still recommend that if you’re a Nano owner who exercises, the Speck Active-Sport Armband is also worth considering.

The Apple Nike+ iPod system is a great way to track your workouts. All you need is a iPod Nano, the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, and a pair of Nike+ compatible shoes. Wait. What if you don’t like Nike sneakers or want to use the system for other sports like hiking?

Marware has developed an answer to these questions. The Sportsuit Sensor+ is a pouch that slips over the laces of of your own shoes or boots.

Easy, but how well does it work?

To get an accurate reading with this adapter you need to do the following things.

1. The sensor must be placed face down inside the pouch.

It doesn’t matter if the sensor is placed in the Sportsuit Sensor+ before or after threading through the laces of the left shoe.

2. You must calibrate the Nike+ Sensor. Each person walks and runs differently and the statistics will vary upon your weight and height. No cheating. There are instructions on how to do this at : http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/

3. If you change shoes, you will need to re-calibrate.

Once calibrated, the system works as if you have Nike+ shoes. I tested mine on an outdoor track so that I could verify the distance measured using the Sensor+ against actual distances:

Walking 1000 meters: 987 Meters reported via sensor (98.7% accuracy)
Running 1000 Meters: 972 Meters reported via sensor (97.2% accuracy)

Easy to use, accurate and cheap. Three things I like in a gadget.

You know how everyone loves Vaja cases because of the sheer number of color combinations available to buyers? Well now you can have that same experience, but with iPod silicone skins. ifrogz gives you over 1,000,000 design options with their wrapz, bandz and screenz sets. Yes, I did say 1
million! Prepare for choice overload…

Case sets are available for the fourth generation iPod, iPod Photo, Video and nano. Your ifrogz set will arrive packaged in a thick vinyl ziploc style bag.

The wrapz are the main silicone skins, which are available in 20 different colors. This case is a bit thicker than some similar products that I’ve reviewed in the past. Although it feels thicker, it is soft and pliable, which makes it easy to insert and remove your iPod. Nubs on the back side of the case improve grip-ability.

Bandz surround the outside edge of the wrapz. The wrapz have a channel that runs along the edge, so that the bandz will stay in place. You have 21 color options for the bandz. A hole in the bandz allows you access to the earphone jack. The dock connector and hold switch remain covered while the bandz are in place. This part of the ifrogz set is mainly to add to the customization features.

The only problem with the bandz are access to the earphone jack. There is a circular access hole that you can plug the earphone into, but since the band is so thick, it sometimes causes the earphone connector to pop out.

In addition to the wrapz and bandz, the sets also include your choice of screenz/wheel art. The screen part is a clear plastic overlay that is similar to a PDA screen protector. It sticks (with very mild adhesive) to the entire front face of the iPod. As such, it protects the display. Then, the wheel art overlay sticks over the top of the screenz. With two layers of material covering the click wheel, I was a little worried that they would effect the sensitivity. My fears were unfounded though. I had no problems using the wheel to scroll, play, pause etc.

I would have to say that these silicon skins are the nicest that I’ve reviewed thus far. The only part of these sets that I find a little superfluous is the band. I think they more trouble than they are worth. Yes, the band protects the dock connector, but you have to remove the band in order to plug in the docking cable. It also can cause the earphone jack to pop out.

The ifrogz case sets allow you to protect your iPod from everyday wear and tear, while giving you so many color / design choices, that you’ll be hard pressed to pick just one set.

Along with being an avid tech-guy, I’m a diehard runner. Over the years I’ve found the right shoes, clothes, music player, and accessories are important for an enjoyable run. My current mp3 player is the iPod Nano that I used in conjunction with an old Nike armband that was held in-place with velcro. It was an adequate set up, until the velcro began to regularly let go and I had to catch my Nano before it went shooting off the back of the running machine (something I’m sure isn’t covered under AppleCare). After a fair amount of research, the Nike Sports Armband looked to be the best replacement currently out on the market.

The Nike Sport Armband is made of lightweight Nike’s Pro Compression fabric and Dri-FIT material. It is specifically designed to safely hold an iPod Nano during exercising. I’d recommend it for running, cycling, hiking and the like but would not use it while weightlifting. The armband is not ideal for that type of arm movement.

The Nano slips into the bottom of the armband where the form of the material and elastic hold it snuggly in-place.

The armband is seamless, form-fitting, matches most Nike apparel, and is (most importantly) washable. I’m confident that the armband will stay on my arm and the Nano safely within during exercise. However, the armband provides no protection from impact, stumble to the ground, or a crash on a bike.

The Nike Sport Armband is $30 and available in two color combinations (gray/orange & black/gray) and two sizes (small/medium & medium/large). The armband is well made and perfectly engineered for the tasks it was designed for. If you’re a Nano owner who exercises, the Nike Sport Armband is definitely worth considering.

Here’s a quick look at Innopocket’s Metal Deluxe cases for the Apple Video and nano iPods. Made of 100% anodized aircraft grade aluminum, these are light weight play through cases that are available in Black and Silver.

For those of you that like to wear your iPod on your belt, you’ll be happy to know that these cases come with a black plastic squeeze type clip that is removable.

The front of the case has a large clear hard plastic window for the display. Watching videos through this display is not a problem whatsoever. A prefect circular cutout allows for easy access to the click wheel.

Besides the removable belt-clip post, there is also a lanyard attachment eyelet on the back side of the Metal Deluxe case. You can use this with the included strap. Do any of you use these?

The Metal Deluxe case for the Video iPod is lined in black Neoprene to guard your digital media player against scratches and shock.

Two soft rubber bumpers are attached to the bottom edge of the case. I’m not really sure how useful they are. The only thing I can figure out is that they allow you to stand the iPod on end to balance it on a desk.

The nano version of this case is very similar… although a lot smaller ;o)

As you can see, the nano version has the hinge on the top edge instead of the bottom. The belt clip on the back is a removable metal spring clip. I’ve never been a big fan of this style of clip, but this particular one is very strong.

Just like the all of Innopocket’s cases, this one is also lined in Neoprene, which allows the nano to fit snugly inside.

Fit and finish on both cases are first rate. I found no sharp edges or workmanship problems. Innopocket’s Metal Deluxe cases are a great way to protect your iPod while allowing it to remain thin and light.

Vaja iVod cases have always been very popular. The problem is that they are expensive and not everyone that would like to buy one, can actually afford one. Now there is another choice for a case that is almost identical in design and style. The eNOVO for the Apple iPod nano from E&B Cases is available in Black, Orange, Red and Brown.

Looks a lot like the iVod doesn’t it? Right down to the little metal logo tag in the lower right corner. Of course there are a few differences. For one, the front of the eNOVO is not padded like the iVod. I don’t find this to be a problem at all. The case is rigid enough that it will protect your nano from most normal abuse.

The circular cutout for the click wheel lines up just fine and does not hinder scrolling at all. The cutout on the bottom of the case for the docking connector and earphone jack will allow for syncing / charging with a cable, but not with a dock.

The cutout for the display is fine, but does not have a clear plastic screen protector as found on the Vaja case. I think this is important due to the fragility of the nano display.

The leather around the top of the nano needs to extend above the actual device, for added protection. As is, the top edges of the nano are exposed.

Besides those 2 small complaints, this is a great case that costs quite a bit less than the Vaja iVod. Of course, you won’t have all the color choices that you do with Vaja. You do have the choice of a belt clip though, for an additional $3. So, if you’ve been drooling over a Vaja case for your nano, but didn’t have the funds, you will want to take a closer look at the eNOVO.

My Apple iPod nano has been waiting patiently for a Vaja iVod case for a couple months now. So, it was very happy when the Fedex person dropped not one, but two of them off on my door step the other day. Available in 30 solid colors, and 32 dual colors, this hard shell Catrina leather case is the ultimate protector for your favorite digital audio player.

I was sent a Black and an Orange version of the iVod. With a slightly poofy padded leather face and a hard shell back, this case is both protective and great looking.

A perfect circular cutout allows easy access to the click wheel, and a clear plastic window over the display keeps the fragile nano screen protected from scratches.

The back of the case will either be plain, or will have a post for a belt clip. You have two choices for belt clips. Either the plastic ultra clip, or the metal Rivet system clip. Vaja decided to configure these cases for the Rivet clip system.

The Rivet system is definitely cool. You can read more about it in a review I wrote over 2 years ago.

As you can see, there is one large opening in the bottom of the case to allow for the charging / syncing cable and earphone. Sorry, but you can’t sync / charge with the dock while the nano is in this case. The leather at the bottom is too thick and doesn’t allow the nano to make contact with the connector. Using a cable is not a problem though.

The top is open to accommodate insertion and removal of the nano, as well as access to the hold switch. The leather is thick enough that it will protect the nano from flat falls to a hard surface. One thing to note is that unlike some of Vaja’s other iPod cases, you won’t need a pry bar to remove the nano.

The iVod does add some bulk to the itty bitty nano. Mostly just in thickness, not really in weight. That said, you can’t help but love everything that Vaja makes. Construction and materials are perfect. The only issue is price. As reviewed, these cases are $75. Not cheap… But if money is no object, then you’ll appreciate the Vaja iVod, and so will your nano.

There are a couple of difference between the Marware cover and the others that are worth mentioning. First of all, the actual color of this cover seems to be brighter and not as translucent as the others. The silicon material also feels a bit thicker than the Brando and Pivot covers.

All of the cutouts line up with their intended features. The cutout around the click wheel is tapered instead of blunt cut, which is a nice touch.

Included with the Sport Grip are protective clear stickers for the click wheel and display. The adhesive used for these stickers feel very light. I don’t think the stickers will leave any residue when removed.

Connecting with the dock or a charging cable is not a problem.

Access to the hold switch isn’t an issue either.

The only thing that keeps me from liking this cover better than the Brando cover (my favorite), is that lint and dust seems to stick to it slightly more than the others. Despite that fact, the Marware cover is less expensive than the other two.

Price: $9.95

C.E.O. Card Wallet

If you’re wanting to combine your wallet with your nano case, this one will do the trick as long as you don’t have too much cash or too many credit cards. Available in Black, Tan, Pink and Red, this full grained leather case fits well in a coat pocket.

This is a book style case with nothing to hold the cover closed. The outer part of the wallet is padded and somewhat stiff.

The interior has one vertical slot that can hold folded cash or credit cards. The opposite side of the wallet has a holster for the nano. The nano slides into the holster from the top, where it is held securely. The back of the holster is lined with soft suede and there is a clear plastic protector sewn into the display area.

The cutout for the click wheel lines up just fine, and the earphone jack at the bottom is equally accessible. You will be required to remove the nano from the wallet in order to charge and sync music though.

Although this case would not be big enough to replace my regular wallet, it is made well and will protect your nano from everyday wear and tear.

Price: $24.95

Sportsuit Convertible

This is more of a case system than just a case. It can be used with the included hand-strap, belt clip or armband, and is available in Blue, Grey and Black.

The case is made of stretchy orca-skin neoprene, with clear plastic covering the face of the nano.

On the back of the case you will find a Multidapt clip connector like those used on Krusell cases.

The nano slides into the case from the bottom. Once fully inserted, the bottom flap can be tucked up into the case like a shirt tail. A small circular cutout for the earphone is cut into the flap.

You can use this case with the included hardcover by pressing it face first into it. Then the Multidapt spring clip or the arm band clip can be attached depending on the way you want to wear the case. You can also attach the case to the armband without the hardcover.

While it’s cool that you can use this case in different ways, I found actually using the nano while inside it, to be a bit harder than usual. The bottom part of the clear plastic window on the front isn’t quite big enough. As a result, using your thumb to scroll though artists or songs doesn’t feel as smooth as it could. My thumb would brush the bottom of the cutout causing the scrolling to slow down.

There’s also the issue that you have to pull out the ‘shirt tail’ in order to sync / charge with a cable or dock. While this isn’t a really difficult task, it does require a bit of wrestling due to the tight fit.

If you’re an active person, the Sportsuit Convertible will surely be a useful accessory for you and your nano.

Price: $29.95

Whether it’s for a PDA, or a MP3 player, Vaja knows how to protect gadgets with a combination of both style substance and style. The substance part is taken care of beautifully with high quality leather, stitching and findings. When it comes to style, Vaja set the bar a long time ago. No one makes a better form fitting and great looking leather case. It’s a common practice for me to buy a new gadget and then anxiously wait for the day that Vaja creates a case specifically for it. This time around it’s an Apple iPod nano case. Two of them actually…

Classic AP171

The AP171 case is play through leather case that adds very little bulk to the super small nano. It is available in Aniline and Vitelino leathers. Vitelino is shinier than the more matte finish of the Aniline leather. Regardless as to which style you choose, this case is not padded. The leather is stiff though and provides adequate protection.

The nano slides into the bottom of the case. You don’t need to worry about the nano falling out of the case though. The fit is extremely tight. You could say too tight. I started having a panic attack the first time I tried to remove the nano. Without using an object to push it out from the top, it probably would still be there.

You really don’t need to remove it from this case though, as all controls, switches and jacks are fully accessible while the nano is in this case. The cutouts line up perfectly and the plastic screen cover protects the display while remaining crystal clear.

Since the bottom of the case is open, you can easily plug in the dock connector to sync and charge with your computer. That said, the bottom of the nano is the main part of the device that remains unprotected. We all know how easy it is to scratch an iPod, so this may be a concern.

This case can be purchased with several different options. For additional $’s, you can have it embossed with your name, add a wheel protector, or matching leather lining. You can also get a regular plastic belt clip, a Rivet system clip, a metal hook or no clip at all. I asked for the metal loop clip.

The metal hook clip swivels and has a spring loaded clasp that you can use to clip on a belt loop, purse strap, etc.

I like this case because it’s pretty minimal and doesn’t add much bulk to my music player.

Prices start at $34.00.

Classic AP161

If you want a little bit more protection for your iPod nano, you can go with the AP161 case. This one is also play through, but it has a magnetic flip cover that protects the click wheel and bottom of the nano. Like the AP171, a plastic screen protector is sewn into the case.

It has the same design, where the iPod slides in from the bottom, top first. Yeah, this one is just as tight as the AP171.

Like the AP171, the AP161 can be purchased with a belt clip, rivet clip, metal hook or no belt clip at all. A wheel protector is also an option.

There is a cutout at the top of the case for the hold switch.

The dock connector is accessible for syncing and charging.

This is a great looking case. It adds very little bulk to the nano, but protects it from everyday wear and tear.

Prices start at $40.00.

Trying to decide on a perfect case for your Apple iPod nano can be very hard to do, considering all of the currently available choices on the market. There are metal cases, plastic cases, silicon cases, and of course, leather cases. I tend to prefer the leather ones. I don’t know if it’s the feel, or the smell, but leather just has a comfort to it, that other materials do not. This is why I wasn’t opposed to taking a look at the leather iPod nano wrap from dasblau when they approached me for a review.

The wrap arrived in a standard business sized brown envelope. Available in a myriad of colors, I was sent a Black wrap with White stripes. Other styles included plain wraps (no stripes), wraps with 1 stripe, 2 stripes, studded stripes and buckled belts. Whew, try saying that 3 times fast! ;o)

The wrap has a very basic design. It’s just a rectangle folds around the nano, leaving the top and bottom of the player exposed for accessibility to the hold switch and earphone jack.

The leather used to construct the wrap is a very soft glove leather that feels wonderful in hand. The interior of my particular case was a dark bronze satin. The only thing that detracts from the otherwise simple design of this product, is the strip of evil Velcro that is used to keep the wrap closed. Well, that and the fact that they expect you to also use Velcro to hold the nano securely inside the case. HORRORS! How many of you will actually stick Velcro to the back of your nano? Not I.

At first, I didn’t think dasblau even expected people to secure the nano in the wrap. It wasn’t until I read the letter that accompanied the wrap in the shipping envelope, that I realized a small dot of Velcro (which they call a Velcoin) that was supposed to be supplied with the wrap, had not been included with mine. I guess it doesn’t matter that I didn’t receive one, because I would have never actually stuck it to the back of my digital audio player.

Besides the Velcoin, the wrap also has a ‘bumper’, on the bottom edge of the wrap. This bumper, is actually just a small tab of leather sewn into the bottom seam. The idea is that this tab will keep the nano from sliding out of the wrap. For me, that is just not enough protection.

As is, the only way I would use this wrap, is as a transport case for my nano. Something to protect it while in riding in my gear bag. dasblau are working on several other designs, which I hope will be better suited to people that use the Apple iPod nano, while on the go. I look forward to seeing their improved versions.
