If you are the proud owner of an iPhone 4 or the newer – and cooler – iPhone 4S, you either have figured out that you need or want a protective case or have made the conscience decision that cases are clumsy, intrusive, ugly or all three and therefore, not for you. Well, what if we could remove one of those obstacles to you using a case? Let’s face it; as beautiful as the iPhone is, it is made of glass and it’s slippery. Guess what happens to glass when it’s dropped? Right, and a cracked iPhone is far uglier than any protective case. Which brings us to the CalypsoCase from CalypsoCrystal. This homage to utter simplicity and utter exclusivity (because of price) can change your mind about ugly cases.

The Calypso case looks beautiful, feels great and smells rich as only top grade leather can. It should, because this is one expensive case. Clad in Italian leather, titanium frame and trimmed in a real silver band, the handmade Calypso case exudes class. This is a case to show off during a night on the town. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyday use – not because it can’t handle wear and tear, but simply because the design is impractical.

The Calypso wraps the phone completely. To answer a call, you have to pull on the iPhone to extract it completely. Except the iPhone doesn’t want to be removed. The fit is so tight and the iPhone’s glass is so slick that getting a grip is almost impossible. I had to dig a fingernail into the ear speaker to get a decent grip. I was worried I would damage the iPhone. I’m told that with use, the case loosens up a bit and this becomes less of a problem. That hasn’t yet happened for me. What this case needs is an opening at the bottom for pushing or a tab for pulling. Either solution would go a long way to make this an unbeatable case.

The Calypso case also hides the screen, requiring you to remove the phone just to see anything. In some ways, that defeats the purpose of having a case.

The Calypso is packaged like a fine piece of jewelry, which is not surprising, because Calypso’s other product is a handmade leaded crystal iPod/iPhone dock. You just feel like you are getting something special and unique as it is unwrapped. And you are.

As long as you have to patience to break in the case, realize that it is not all that practical for daily use and can appreciate the craftsmanship it took to make It, then it should give you years of use. Or until Apple redesigns the iPhone… again.

The Calypso case is also available for the Samsung Galaxy and the BlackBerry Bold and Curve.

I recently told you about the biodegradable and compostable iPhone 4/4S case from the guys who gave us the iBend iPhone and iPad stands. The ecoSnap cases are made of organic (non-food crop) plant resins using sustainable manufacturing practices. They even have minimal, low-impact packaging. I thought the iBend was an ingenious stand, and I was intrigued to see the iPhone case they had developed. I was happy to give the ecoSnap case a try. Read on to learn about how you can save on an ecoSnap case for yourself.

You can see the minimal packaging in the top picture. It’s just a simple piece of cardboard that wraps around the case. The cardboard is made of 100% recycled materials and is 100% recyclable itself. Or you can throw it into your compost pile just like other paper products.

The ecoSnap is available in Frost and Midnight. I asked for and received the Frost to complement my white iPhone 4. The Frost is a translucent white case. It feels like normal plastic to the hand, so you don’t need to worry it will start to degrade before you’re ready to retire your phone. You can see from the picture that the ecoSnap is a back cover; it also covers the two long sides of the phone.

The back has an opening for the camera and flash. I didn’t notice any problems using the camera while the iPhone was wearing the ecoSnap cover. There’s supposedly room between the iPhone and the cover to carry a business card or an iBend stand, and the long oval opening on the back of the cover is where you slide your finger to slide the card up and out of the case. I found the opening at the top of the case, where the business card should be inserted, to be too narrow for a business card.

It’s difficult to see, but the case is branded at the bottom with the ecoSnap name and a stylized leaf logo.

You can see the sides wrap over the edges of the screen. They don’t interfere with using the screen, but they do form a lip that keeps the screen lifted off the table and protected from scratches if you lay the iPhone face-down. The sides also wrap up around the corners of the sides. This provides a bit of protection for the metal banding, and it keeps the case on securely. The wake/power button, the top microphone, and the headphone jack are all open and easily accessible.

The screen lock/mute button and volume buttons are exposed. I had no trouble using any of these buttons. This opening is sized to work with all models of the iPhone 4 and 4S. The other long side is completely covered by the case.

The speaker, bottom microphone, and docking connector were all open and completely accessible. I had no trouble charging my iPhone while it was wearing the ecoSnap case.

I’ve used the ecoSnap case for several weeks. I like that the case is protective without adding much weight or bulk to my iPhone. (It weighed 0.32 oz on my digital kitchen scale.) The walls of the ecoSnap are thin and don’t add much thickness to the iPhone. Compared to the Bumper I’d been using, the iPhone almost felt caseless. Since I couldn’t fit anything into the card slot, I would have preferred that the case had a solid back to completely protect the back glass. I liked that the case was translucent because I like to see my gadgets as much as possible.

It’s also nice to know that I don’t have to throw a piece of virtually indestructible plastic into the landfill when I finally replace my iPhone 4 with the next model. Instead, I can return my ecoSnap, and they’ll see that it’s sent to a professional composting facility. This professional composting is done at no cost to me, and they’ll even give me a discount toward the purchase of a new ecoSnap case for my new phone. Sounds like a win-win situation for the customer and for the Earth.

And in a win-win situation for you and your friends, you can save 20% off your entire order at ecoSnap. Simply enter the special promo code for Gadgeteer readers (GADGET20) when you order ecoSnap cases for yourself and for people on your gift list.

The GiqueGEAR Smart Station is designed to act as a protective holster, a wallet replacement, and a workstation or stand for your smartphone. It claims to be “the ultimate home for your Android smartphone.” As a local company, GiqueGear (pronounced ‘geek gear’, I think) already has a special place in my heart, but the claim of ‘ultimate home’ for my Samsung Epic? That will take a pretty special case.

The SmartStation’s main claim to fame is that it is a fully protective case that also works as a portrait or landscape stand for your phone.

SmartStation- front (also available with the Android logo)

SmartStation- back, showing the belt strap

As a case, it offers a lot of value. The materials and workmanship are very good. It is nicely padded and lined with a soft fabric. The full double zipper is backed up by a Velcro tab which also serves as a belt strap. Being a universal case, it is a bit over-sized and clunky, but not terribly so. It features two big pockets so it can serve as a wallet as well. The case offers excellent protection from drops, smacks, impacts, etc.

The main thing that bugged me as a case is the ‘belt and suspenders’ overkill of the zipper and the Velcro tab. It made it a bit more awkward to get to the phone when it is on your belt. The phone sits rather loosely in the case, so a moment of fumbling at the belt and it could end up on the ground without any protection.

I must also admit that as much as I like the flaming head logo, I would like to see a ‘professional edition’ with either no logo or a much reduced logo available. I cannot picture myself rocking this sort of image at work, and in all honesty, the alternative Android logo is not much better.

SmartStation- inside

Cases like this are thick on the ground in the cell phone world. What makes this case special is the work station element. Flip the belt strap and Velcro tab around and the case becomes an easel.

SmartStation as a work station

You place your phone in the front of the stand (held by a little mesh sling at the bottom) for a portrait stand, or on the back side against the ‘leg for landscape mode. Note the ‘speed bump’ on the bottom edge.

SmartStation- phone in portrait mode

SmartStation- phone in landscape mode

I found that in either position, it was usually a good angle, and did not interfere with my phone’s charger/sync cable (which comes out of the top). The phone stays in place well, even when you tap on the screen.

The few downsides I found, other than the case issues mentioned above, are that the Velcro tab that holds the case closed bugged me in this configuration as well- you can see it up there just sticking out. I also felt as though with a little modification, the phone could be positioned in either landscape or portrait mode on the leg.

Overall, the GiqueGear SmartStation case is a great value at $24.95. Well-made, good-looking, protective, and functional.

After wanting one for what felt like forever, I finally bought an iPad 2. All I can say is that it was worth the wait. I am an unapologetic Apple fanboy (Mac user since 1988) and the iPad just makes me more impossible to be around when the discussion turns to tech. But despite the love I have for all things Apple, there is one issue that bugs me: their products can be fragile if dropped. I am a complete klutz, so I made sure I had an iPad case ready as soon as I bought my long-awaited toy. It this case (bad pun), it was the United SGP Argos iPad 2 edition. Once I opened the box, the iPad went immediately into the Argos case before the it was even turned on. I am that paranoid. $600 is a lot of money and I want to protect what I buy.

The all-leather Argos case is not cheap. However, it is extremely well made, fits like a tight glove and doesn’t get in the way like so many cases can. The Argos is a folio style case with a rigid front cover that folds back 180º on a leather hinge for ease of use. Inside the front cover are 2 fold-out “easels” for propping up the iPad at either viewing or typing angles. To be honest, the iPad usually sits in my lap, so I haven used either easel yet. The texture of the leather exterior looks and feels rich as does the microfiber inner lining, which is good at protecting the screen from possible scratching. I’m not a fan of the repeating SGP logo imbedded in the lining, but it’s not horrible. I would have preferred a more subtle design.

The Argos case fits the iPad so well that it is a bit difficult to attach and remove. That’s actually a good thing. With the exception of the rocker switch, volume buttons, on/off switch and docking port, the back of the iPad is completely covered. Most cases leave an large opening where the speaker goes, but SGP included a metal mesh which protects the iPad’s speaker without altering the sound in any way. It’s a nice attention to detail often overlooked in other cases.

The case folds flat, open or closed and is kept closed using a leather lip. There is a slight protrusion on the back where the hinge is attached. The hinge is made of the same leather as the rest of the case, but isn’t reinforced like the lid, so when propped up, the case can feel a little wobbly. However, one unintentional benefit to this thin hinge is that I can now clip on my new Wacom Bamboo stylus (sold separately), so it’s always available when I need it. I like that.

The Argos case comes in 5 colors; white, black, blue, pink, and a suede looking tan (called Vintage Brown) which costs a tiny bit more and looks fantastic. I picked the black one, although now I wish I had chosen tan. Oh, well.

Despite the many details and advantages to the Argos case, what sold me is that silly Apple magnetic sleep/awake feature which the Argos supports. Open the case and the iPad turns on. Close it and it shuts off. You would be surprised how many iPad 2 cases don’t take advantage of this feature. I may say it’s silly, but I have been thoroughly spoiled by this feature.

Drop protection should be fairly good with the Argos case. There is some decent thickness in the leather to absorb the minor drops and bumps of everyday life. I have not had the opportunity – or misfortune – of seeing how well it works yet. And no, I didn’t test it. I’m not that brave or dumb.

As with other genuine leather cases, the Argos should look better as it ages and acquires wear and tear. I also acquired two other cases to try when I got my iPad so I could decide which one I preferred. I’ve had the Argos for almost a month now and I am in no hurry to try the other cases. I think I’ll keep using the Argos for the time being.

We dress ourselves. We dress our kids. Those of us who are a little on the kooky side even dress our pets… So it shouldn’t be that unusual to dress our iPads and Macbooks too right? Computer Apparel is now offering the V_Neck Sleeve for iPads and 13″, 15″ and 17″ Macbooks. The V_Neck Sleeve looks like a favorite t-shirt that most of us probably have in our closet. It’s machine washable cotton and features a breast pocket that can hold your iPhone, a zippered pocket for your device and an open pocket for magazines. You can even shove cables down the neck opening. The V_Neck Sleeve is available in 5 colors and is priced between $49.99 and $79.99 depending on size. Personally, I think they look a little goofy… but then I don’t make my cat Max wear clothes either, so I might not be the best one to judge.

New Zealand’s Nutshell Corporation makes a series of cases for handheld devices called “Tuff-as-Nuts”. Gadgeteer Mike Reigel verified that the name was appropriate back in 2003. They combine that reputation with an interesting fastener in a tough wallet case for your smartphone.

The main body of the case is a nice piece of gorgeous leather with a rich but subtle smell. The inside is a soft fabric that is Velcro compatible. There is a magnetic tab, and pockets on the opposite side for bills, cards, etc. The logo and other info is embossed on the pockets and does not appear anywhere outside.

Wallet with my phone inside, showing pockets and logo

The big difference in this case is a ‘Micro-fine Velcro Pad’. This interesting stuff features a self-adhesive pad of the ‘hook side’ that is dang near flat! The barely there hooks snag securely into the soft fabric lining the case- it almost looks like magic! Try as I might, I could not really do justice to it with a photo.

This pad barely adds anything to the back of the phone- even as a pocket-carryin’ guy, the pad rarely caught or interfered, or even felt odd at any time. Yet, it holds very securely in the case. I like this stuff well enough that I am searching for a source for some of my own projects. (I believe it is this stuff- Velcro Ultra Mate.)

OK, so… tough- check. Good looking- check. Interesting element with the thin Velcro- check. How is it in use?

Obviously my experience with the Samsung Epic will be different than your experience with your phone, but I found this wallet to be a bit chunky.

Wallet in use, end view- note the angle of the magnetic tab

My phone is thick enough that the magnetic tab does not lay flat on the cover. If I press down by the tab…

POP! The tab just pops off. It would be fine with a thinner phone, but the Epic is just pushes the boundaries a bit. In fact, I dislike how the Epic fits in most cases- it is already a tad thick and the case just makes it worse.

Beside this rather minor issue (even with the so-so fit, it still works fine), this is a terrific case- well-made, protective, and incredibly durable… although whether it is worth $59.95 is up to you.

Last week, I reviewed the Smart Libretto case for iPad 2 from Bella. When I opened the package, I found they had included an extra case, the Veneta Slimmer sleeve for iPad 2. Just like their other cases, the Veneta Slimmer is handmade in Turkey, using fine Turkish and Italian genuine leathers. The Veneta Slimmer is a simple sleeve case for people who prefer to use their iPad 2 caseless, but want a little protection for it while it’s packed away in a briefcase or gear bag. Let’s give it a closer look.

Some of these images can be clicked for a larger view.

The Veneta Slimmer is available in black, red, or brown leather; I received the brown. Just like the Smart Libretto, the Veneta Slimmer was just sliding around in an empty box with nothing to keep it centered or to protect it from scratches. The case didn’t have any scuff marks, though.

This sleeve is also made of leather, but the description didn’t specify the type. It had a pleasant leather smell with no hint of chemicals. The stitching used a color-matched thread, and the stitches were even and straight. The leather is smooth to the touch with visible grain. The leather finish has a sheen, but it’s not glossy. The interior is lined with a sueded fabric. The case is lightly padded. The edges of the leather have a smooth, rubbery coating to protect the raw edges. The only branding is “bella” embossed on one side, just under the top cutout. The bright lights I use for taking review photos give an ombre effect to the color. The case looks much more evenly colored to my eye than it does in these pictures.

The case measures 9.75″ long (at the longest point) X 7.9″ wide X 0.6″ thick with the iPad 2 inside. It weighs 4.2 oz on my digital kitchen scale. Because of its design, it won’t add anything to the size or weight of the iPad 2 while it’s being used. It’s small and thin enough that it won’t add much to the weight of your gear bag or briefcase.

There is a large cutout at the top of the case which leaves quite a bit of the iPad 2 exposed (front and back) and a smaller cutout at the bottom of the case. These cutouts allow you to get a grip on the iPad to remove it from the case. The bottom cutout also allows you to charge the iPad 2 without removing it from the Venetta Slimmer sleeve.

The Venetta Slimmer has a very snug fit. You don’t have to worry about the iPad 2 slipping out unexpectedly. Because it is so snug, there is no way that you can use the Slimmer with the Smart Cover or anything more than perhaps a skin on the iPad 2.

Just like the Bella Smart Libretto, the Veneta Slimmer looks very sleek and sophisticated. This will look right at home in the boardroom, but it’s not too “fancy” to use for casual trips to the coffee shop. It’s a nice case for anyone who likes to use a caseless iPad 2, but who needs some screen protection when the device is in their bag.

Some images may be clicked for a larger view.

Details for the Smart Libretto don’t specify which type of leather is used in the case. When you open the package, you get a subtle whiff of that leather smell; I didn’t smell any chemicals that may have been used in curing or coloring at all. I was a bit surprised that the Smart Libretto was just sliding around in the package; there was no supporting structure inside the box to keep the product centered in the clear window or to protect it from scratches as it slid around in the box. The case didn’t seem to be scuffed up, though.

The leather is smooth to the touch, but you can see graining on the surface. The finish has a sheen, but I wouldn’t say the case was glossy. In the pictures on the website, the red appeared to be a bright, true red. The case I received is actually a darker, very bluish red color. It’s a bit more sophisticated and subdued that the lipstick-red color I was expecting. The stitching is very even and straight and done in a red thread that’s just slightly brighter than the leather. The only branding on the front is “bella” embossed into the bottom right corner. The outside of the case is hard. I don’t know what the material is, but there is something hard sandwiched between the leather and the lining material. The edges of the case extend a bit past the edges of the iPad 2. The Smart Libretto should be able to protect the iPad 2 from bumps to the screen, back, or edges.

Leather tab isn't held shut when not in use

You’ll notice a fold running down the length of the front. This fold allows the case to be converted into a stand. The back of the case has a flap of leather with a snap that’s also used to convert to a stand. The only complaint I have about this case is that this flap doesn’t snap down to the back when not in use. The flap is open on three sides and gets caught on things. It worsens a little with use, as the flap starts to curl up a bit more. You’ll notice the back has a cutout for the iPad 2’s back camera. The Smart Libretto case doesn’t interfere with the camera operation.

The case is held shut with a non-magnetic snap centered on the right edge. The case also has a magnet in the front flap that acts to sleep/wake the iPad 2. The snap holds the case securely closed, and I haven’t heard that clicking sound that lets me know the iPad is being woken up by the cover sliding.

The Smart Libretto measures about 9.5” long X 7.25” wide X 0.6” thick. It weighed 10.6 oz on my digital kitchen scale. It definitely adds some size and weight to the iPad 2. The hard edges of the case feel much different to hold than the rounded edges of the iPad 2. That said, the case is comfortable to hold and use. I personally find that the iPad is too heavy to use comfortably in a book-style case. Also, a book style case occupies both hands, and using the iPad requires at least one free hand to operate the touchscreen. The spine of the Smart Libretto is soft enough that you can fold the front completely to the back; I was able to easily support the iPad 2 with one hand this way.

Inside, the case is lined in a fabric with a suede texture. The front flap has a vertical pocket with four card slots. These slots are the right width to hold credit cards and a driver’s license and deep enough to hold them securely without being so deep that the cards disappear into the slot. I personally wouldn’t carry my ID or credit cards in these slots, but they are perfect for the small blank business cards I use as note cards. You can also slide a couple of folded sheets of paper under the cardholder pocket.

The iPad 2 is held in a leather frame. You slide it in from the spine side of the frame, and it’s held securely in place by a large flap of leather that slides under the iPad 2. The front has a cutout for the home button and a teardrop-shaped cutout for the front-facing camera and ambient light sensor. The leather frame fits over almost all of the white bezel on my iPad 2, but it doesn’t interfere with using the touchscreen. The frame has a bit of stiffening on top to keep it flat and to prevent it from stretching out. This stiffening also protects the front of the iPad 2 from being damaged by the back side of the closure snap.

The sides of the frame are folded around and sewn to the back of the case. There are cutouts for the controls and ports. The side leather is soft, but the frame is so closely fitted to the iPad 2 that reaching the controls can be difficult. I found that I could plug in my headphones and charging cable with no problems. Because the hard outer portion of the back extends past the edge of the iPad 2, it’s a bit difficult to get your fingers to the back of the iPad to use the volume rocker and power switch. It’s really hard to use the screen lock/mute switch. The speaker, situated on the back of the iPad 2 as it is, is a bit muffled. I find myself cupping my hand around the back of the case at the speaker to redirect the sound to the front so I can hear better.

The Smart Libretto isn’t just a protective case with the sleep/wake function; it’s also a great stand. Fold the front cover back and snap it to the leather tab on the back, and the Smart Libretto can be used as a vertical or horizontal stand. In the horizontal position, it’s great for watching movies or using a Bluetooth keyboard. Lay it down, and it becomes a stable typing stand when using the on-screen keyboard. If you’re very tall or using a very low table, like the seat-back trays in an airplane, the typing stand position might work well as a viewing stand, too.

When I use the iPad 2, I usually have it in the horizontal orientation, and I always have it sitting on some body part. I’ve found that using the iPad 2 this way for an hour or two results in a sore area that feels almost like a bruise. When I used the Smart Libretto, I snapped it into the horizontal stand and set the broad leather base on whatever body part was being used as the prop. The broad leather base spread out the weight of the iPad 2, and I never had a sore place, no matter how long I used the iPad 2.

I really like the Bella Smart Libretto. It provides a lot of protection to the front and back of the iPad 2. It is a worthy substitute for the Smart Cover, and it works very well as a stand. It does add some heft to the iPad 2, but you get a lot of functionality for that added heft. The case is beautiful, and it will look at home at the office or the coffee shop. If you like to take you gadgets with you when you camp or hike, you may want a different case – not that the Smart Libretto couldn’t function outdoors, but you probably wouldn’t want to risk damaging the beautiful leather.

Do you cringe when you see another iPhone 4 that has scratches? Protecting your investment while still having a cool looking phone can be a challenge if you want to avoid a bulky case. The Incipio iPhone 4 feather Ultralight Hard Shell Case is a very light weight and non-bulky option. They sent me a sample of this case in a funky Glossy Orange Soda color. Let’s take a look.

Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

The feather lives up to its name as it’s less than 1mm thick and weighs only 0.4 oz. In addition to the case, Incipio also includes a screen polishing cloth and 2 screen protectors.

The case is made of polycarbonate and is easy to snap on and remove from your iPhone 4 as it is semi-flexible.

The case will protect the back and sides of your phone. The edges wrap up and over the metal sides.

The large cutout over the camera lens allows you to take flash pictures with no issues.

The equally large side cutout provides access to the mute, and volume buttons. The size of the cutout makes this case compatible with both AT&T and Verizon’s versions of the iPhone 4.

Here’s a view of the top of the case. You’ll have no problems accessing the headphone jack or wake button.

The bottom of the case does not cover the speakers or docking port, so there are no issues there either.

I like the look and thinness of the Incipio feather case, but there’s one thing it doesn’t do well… and that’s provide a better grip on your phone. We all know that a naked iPhone 4 is a slippery little bugger and the feather case unfortunately keeps it slippery due to its slick surface. That’s really my only complaint about it. Other than that, it is easy to snap on, easy to remove, comes in a bazillion colors and doesn’t add additional bulk to your phone.

What is your favorite iPhone 4 case?

There are a bazillion iPhone cases on the market and we’re here to tell you about one of them… It’s the Shelter Case from BodyGuardz, the same people that offer protective screen and body skins for Apple’s popular smartphone. Their Dry Apply Screen Protector is actually one of my favorites… but what about a full case? Can I call it a favorite too? Let’s see…

Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

Package Contents

1 BodyGuardz Shelter Case
1 ScreenGuardz HD Anti-Glare Screen Protector
1 Cleaning Cloth

The Shelter case is available in 9 colors and is made of two materials. It has a rigid Polycarbonate shell, with a soft TPE rubber covering on the back, interior and top edges that surround the display.

The Green part of the case is the soft rubber, while the lighter (off white?) colored part of the case is the rigid polycarbonate.

You’ll notice the Green lines inside the case. These are raised ridges that are supposed to protect the back of the iPhone.

There are cutouts for the earphone jack, mute button, camera, speakers and docking connector.

You’ll notice that there are special hard buttons that cover the volume and power button.

These buttons actually work very well and because they are raised, it is very easy to locate the buttons with your thumb / finger without looking at them directly.

Insering the iPhone into the case takes a little effort, but not enough to complain about. Once inserted, you have access to all the buttons and ports. The mute switch cut out is large enough so that you can easily flip the switch when needed.

You should have no issues with plugging in the stock set of earbuds or any other earbuds into the earphone jack of your phone while it’s in the case.

I had no issues plugging in the dock / charge connector either.

The BodyGuardz site claims that this case provides enhanced sound from the speakers. Ummmm… ok… How? I haven’t noticed any difference with or without the case…

I will say that the thin layer of soft rubber does offer a very good grip to the phone, which it doesn’t have when not in a case.

The cut out over the camera lens does not case any issues with flash photography as far as I’ve noticed in the short time I’ve been using the case.

Also included with this case is an HD anti-glare ScreenGuardz screen protector. It’s an easy to apply protector that will keep your display scratch free, while the case protects the rest of the phone. I installed the protector in a couple of seconds and give it a thumbs up for clarity and touch screen sensitivity.

The Shelter Case from BodyGuardz performs its intended job, but isn’t what I would call sexy. It’s actually a bit boring as far as the style goes and no one will stop you to ask where you bought it. I would not spend $30 on one, but I suppose that the case is really only ‘worth’ around $14 since they include a $16 screen protector with it. With so many more interesting cases on the market, I can’t really see this case becoming all that popular.

The InCase Origami Workstation is a well-made and thoughtfully designed case.

Carrying a keyboard for long typing sessions on a portable device can be a hassle. There are many keyboards that can connect, cases that contain keyboards, and stands that make the combination more useful. I recently purchased a case from InCase that is custom made for the Apple BlueTooth keyboard, and designed to also serve as a stand for an iOS device in either landscape or portrait mode. It’s called the Origami Workstation, and retails for $30.

Recently, the iPad has come under scrutiny as more than just a “media consumption device”, but as a content creation tool. Those who argue for this use mention that with the simple addition of a physical keyboard, most of the problems of the virtual keyboard vanish, and there is software available that is sufficient for some serious writing or editing.

As I said, I recently purchased the InCase Origami Workstation to use with my Apple Wireless Keyboard along with my original iPad. I’ve taken this combination on trips locally and for several days out, and have found it extremely functional for writing, note-taking, and general computer use on the go.

<img class="size-large wp-image-70873" title="The Origami Workstation in use seen from the rear.
The Origami Workstation in use seen from the rear. Note the tabs joining to create a sturdy stand.

Taking notes and other writing is one of the more common uses many people give for needing a portable device like an iPhone, iPod or iPad. Web browsing doesn’t require much typing, and email, FaceBook, and the like is pretty low volume as well, but typing long-form documents is not the sort of thing most folks want to tackle on a virtual keyboard.

I’ve been using various keyboards connected to portable devices for many years now. The Newton had a nice tethered one, which, like the rest of the Newton, took a long time to get over no longer having. I beta-tested a four-section, direct-connect keyboard for the Palm from a group called ThinkOutside, which became a huge seller. Later versions were not directly connected, but instead used IR or BlueTooth. There have been many others, most of which I didn’t use because I was using my MacBook Pro for long-form documents through most of the last decade. (I trained and supported a program that required me to have a laptop, so “going light” with a portable device wasn’t possible.)

With the rise of the iPhone, there was a huge cry from the user community to allow some sort of connection to Apple’s (or anyone else’s) BlueTooth keyboard. The jailbreak community soon answered that call, but it was not until the advent of the iPad that Apple officially instituted support for external keyboards with iOS devices. The original iPad arrived with two options for typing: the Apple BlueTooth Keyboard, or the Apple iPad Docking Keyboard. They are both roughly the same size, but the docking model had several differences from the BlueTooth one. First was the physical connection. This meant that the iPad could not be used in a case during typing, but on the positive side, it also brought a few specialized keys for control of iOS, and no need for batteries. Another downside of physical connection, and quite possibly the death blow, is that you can’t use it in landscape mode. This means no typing into Keynote (which only works in landscape), or any of the nice word processors in their wide screen layout. Plus, it’s just an odd shape, with that docking connector sticking up. Suffice it to say, the main keyboard folks are getting to use with iPads today is Apple’s BlueTooth model.

Let’s get back to the workstation case at hand and find out how it fits into this new niche. The InCase Origami Workstation case has a plastic clip that easily grasps the battery silo on the back of the keyboard. Two hook-and-loop patches hold the cover closed.

Bottom of the InCase Origami Workstation, showing hook-and-loop tabs on closure straps.

<img class="size-large wp-image-70870" title="Top of the case, showing the "fold" lines.
Top of the case, showing the "fold" lines. These are very strong and show no sign of weakness or creasing.

When opened, the top two flaps angle back and attach to form a triangular stand that can hold an iPad in either orientation, with or without a case. (Of course, some really thick cases or those with covers that don’t fold over sometimes make this awkward, but most of the common covers work pretty well.)

Origami case folded back into stand.

The case is constructed about 3/8″ larger than the keyboard on every edge, and is less than a quarter inch thick. While made from very stiff vinyl laminate, it is still somewhat flexible. The surface is similar to the original Apple iPad case, but not quite as soft, with a subtle embossed InCase logo in the lower left corner of the cover.

I was hoping that the stiff cover would prevent any keys from being pressed and inadvertently starting my iPad, but they can still be pressed. This means that the keyboard can (and will) wake up when a key is pressed, unless you take care to always hold down the power button on your keyboard for 4 seconds to turn it completely off.

While this case is custom-made for the Apple Wireless Keyboard, there is no reason it must be used with an iPad. Any tablet or phone/slate device that can pair with a BlueTooth keyboard should work just as well in the cradle. I did test it out with my iPhone, and it’s not too bad. I rarely compose on the iPhone, but some writing lately could have been easier with a physical keyboard.

Overall, the Workstation is quite a nice addition to my iPad kit, and those that I’ve shown it too seem interested in it as well. Paired with the keyboard, it comes to $100, so it’s not really in the “impulse purchase” category. If you’ve already got a keyboard, however, it’s such a handy way to transport it for more frequent use that I can’t imagine going back to just the keyboard. Four stars.

The case comes in 3 pieces:
1) Front piece that has an integrated clear protective membrane that works well with Playbook’s touch screen.
2) Back piece that has a clear protective membrane over the back camera.
3) A cover piece that can be snapped on the front or back of the case.

The cover piece is made up of hard plastic and can be placed in front or back of the case. It has 4 strips of grip on the bottom to prevent it from sliding on the table. The 2 pictures above show the cover piece on the back of the case. It has a sliding door to expose the back camera of the Playbook.

The above picture shows the cover snapped onto the front of the case. The cover is actually slimmer than the case itself which allows for the Playbook’s speakers to be exposed while still having the cover on. That’s great if you want to leave music playing while fully protecting the Playbook.

Another great feature of the cover piece is that it can be used as a stand as well. OtterBox has added in a X shaped hinge mechanism that allows the Playbook to be propped up on 2 different angles.

These 2 angles are great for viewing on the desk. Only thing is that it’s not angled low enough for comfortable typing.

The front piece with the clear protective membrane does attract fingerprints and oils from the fingers. This photo is taken with a month’s usage of average 2 hours a day.

OtterBox was nice enough to provide flaps to cover the 3 ports on the bottom and also the audio jack on the top right edge.

The buttons on the top are completely covered. The cover actually makes the buttons easier to push since one of the complaints about the Playbook is that the buttons are extremely flush and hard to press.

The audio jack has a cover as well, which takes some digging to pop out. I actually won’t mind if they left the audio jack exposed since it would make it much easier access instead of always digging for the flap. The microphone hole is exposed next to the audio jack and also on the left side of the case.

Both speakers are exposed too. The OtterBox case curves up a bit on the edge and channels the audio pretty well.

The front and back pieces are made up of high quality polycarbonate shell and covered with silicone skin. And silicone loves dust! What surprised me is the little amount of dust I had on the case. I was expecting more after a month’s usage but it seems to be pretty clean with only minor traces of dust. This OtterBox case is not waterproof because of the exposed parts of the case.

One thing about the OtterBox case is that it makes the Playbook look and feel huge. But I like it that way. The OtterBox case actually made it easier to hold the tablet and the extreme protection makes it feel sturdy. The case is priced at $69.95 direct from OtterBox. It’s totally worth it for complete protection of the Playbook.

It took me back over 12yrs ago when I reviewed The Bridge for the PalmPilot. It’s true what they say, “everything old is new again…”. The Dock Extender is a small 30 pin adapter that plugs into the end of your original charge/sync cable and gives you a slimmer connector that more easily plugs into the bottom of your iPhone when it’s in a case (including Apple’s own bumper case). If you find that you have to remove your favorite case whenever you want to charge or sync, grab this $19.95 adapter and that problem will be a thing of the past.

A friend of mine has a Droid X phone and was showing me their new OtterBox Defender case and I was very impressed with the way it was designed. Julie was very fortunate enough to request one for me and I have been using it ever since. The OtterBox Defender Series case for the Verizon Samsung Fascinate phone is one of the best cases I have found so far.

The Defender case is very rugged, according to their website “The OtterBox Defender Series for Samsung Fascinate is perfect for folks who want a tough, rugged case. This burly design includes a tough polycarbonate shell with a built-in screen protector and a durable silicone skin. This is the perfect combination to keep your Fascinate functioning through drops, shocks, bumps and dusty situations! “ And believe me this case will do everything the website mentions and probably more. Now I am usually very careful when it comes to my electronic devices, especially if they are only 7 months old, but I have had my shares of accidental drops of my phone. I always carry my phone in my hand and as I am heading out to the garage every morning with my backpack on my shoulder and my phone in hand, well let’s just say that my phone always finds a way to slip out of my hand and head straight for the concrete floor of the garage. The OtterBox Defender case has held up well and has kept my phone functioning just like new.

The OtterBox Defender Series Case, just like all of their cases, offers three layers of protection. The Defender Series Case comes in three pieces, a clear protective membrane, a Hi-impact polycarbonate shell and a durable silicone skin.

After pulling the case from the package and a little dis-assembly of the case I was ready to start putting my phone into the case. The first step to install the case is to place the phone into one half of the polycarbonate shell followed by placing the other half of the polycarbonate shell onto the front of the two pieces and snapping them together. The polycarbonate shell has a built in screen protector to protect the touch screen of the phone. After the polycarbonate shell is snapped together then the durable silicone skin is installed by first sliding one end of the assembled case into it then pulling the durable silicone skin around the rest of the case. After the durable silicone skin is on the assembled case it then needs to be stretched over the interlocking ribs on the outside of the polycarbonate shell. This keeps the durable silicone skin from coming loose. With everything in place the phone has a certain ruggedness to it, kind of looks like a big rubber bumper all the way around the phone.

Every button is accessible with the use of the OtterBox Defender Series Case, unlike the Commuter Series Case; the button to resume the screen is easily pressed. With this case I didn’t feel like I had to depress the button quite as hard as I had to on the Commuter Case. This is a good thing for me as I like to be able to hit the button quickly instead of having to firmly depress the button to activate my phone. The volume button has the same access; you can actually feel the clicks of the button as you depress it. The Defender Series cases have molded in plugs to protect the charge and head phone ports from dirt and debris and are easily accessible.

As far as being able to use the phone while in the case, I have yet to find anything that I can’t do with my phone. The camera is and speaker for speaker calls or listening to music are all fully accessible. Everything from making calls to sending texts and playing Angry Birds, which is my all time favorite Android game to play are easily done through the clear protective membrane. The only downside I see to the protective membrane is that you have to place a little more pressure on it to get it to register but it is not that noticeable to me. The Defender Series Case also comes with a ratcheting belt clip, which I rarely use because it just seems too big to me after you place the phone into it.

As I have said I have been using the OtterBox Defender Series Case exclusively since getting it and will probably never find another case that I like as well as this one. The case’s rugged design make it attractive and it looks very nice on the phone. It can stand up to almost anything, except water. The case is not waterproof, so don’t try to go swimming with your phone. The Defender Series Case doesn’t make the phone feel bulky, I like to carry my phone with me in my hand and with the Defender Series Case on it actually feels as if I am carrying my phone without a case. I have noticed that while using my phone it sometimes feels as if the durable silicone rubber is moving around on me as I grip my phone, but I have yet to have to reinstall the silicone rubber. It appears that it stays in place no matter how hard you grip your phone.

I asked Julie if she had heard of OtterBox, a friend of mine has the Droid X and he has the Defender series case from OtterBox on his phone, and it looks indestructible. When Julie told me she could get me one to review for my phone I was more than happy to do it. OtterBox has been around since 1998 and according to their website motto “We’ve Got Technology Covered”. After perusing their website I was amazed to see all the great cases they have to offer. I was actually given two cases to review the Commuter Case and the Defender Case for the Samsung Fascinate, I will be reviewing the Defender Case a little later. After taking everything out of the OtterBox packaging, I was immediately fascinated, no pun intended, in the quality that is put into each case OtterBox designs.

The Commuter Case offers 3 layers of protection. Layer 1: Self-adhering clear protective film, Layer 2: Durable silicone mid-layer an dLayer 3: One Piece custom molded polycarbonate shell. This case is designed quite well for this phone, allowing full use of the phone, and the case even gives you access to all the side buttons and complete access to the camera and speaker. I opted not to install the protective film seeing as how I already had a screen protector on my phone, once my screen protector has worn out, then I will install the one that comes with this case as it will cover more of the face of the phone.

Installation of the silicone cover was a breeze… Since it is made of silicone it allows for the case to bend to allow the phone to easily slide into place. The silicone case by itself makes for a nice protection of the phone from dings and everyday use. It feels good in your hands, unlike some cases that make the phone feel awkward or clumsy feeling. Next step was to place the phone with the silicone cover into the polycarbonate shell. This takes a little patience.

Not sure if you can see very well in this picture but the side buttons protection covers protrude from the silicone case approx. 1/16” or less so sliding into the polycarbonate shell took me a little time to figure out. One thing that helped was to place one side of the phone into the shell and then gently pry the shell open as you push the other side in. Once it was in the shell it adds that third layer of protection, which makes this case a solid performer in my eyes. The phone doesn’t feel too weighty in your hands, and the case actually feels like it is part of the phone.

The camera is fully operational with the case on, which I know a lot of people use their phones for taking pictures to send to Facebook and such, I myself have not taken very many pictures with the camera.

This case allows access to all the ports on the phone, which is always good. There is one dust cover on the case and that is for the headphone jack. I wish there was a dust plug for the charging jack.

The volume control button works as expected even when the case is on. I have yet to not be able to turn the volume up or down.

The button that allows you to turn the screen on and off, and to power the phone off is easily accessible also although there have been a few times when I have had to depress the button kind of hard to get it turn on. Other than that all the features on the phone work well with the case on.

The quality on the Commuter Case is exceptional; you barely even notice that you have a case on it. I like the fact that OtterBox has designed a case with protection in mind at a relatively reasonable price. I like the added protection of the polycarbonate shell because as any Samsung Fascinate owner would know the back of the Fascinate scratches very easily and with the polycarbonate shell sliding the phone across the table will not harm the phone. The only thing I have noticed about the silicone membrane cover is that it attracts dust, hair and other debris like a magnet. But if you want a case that will stand up to rugged everyday use then I would definitely suggest the Commuter Case by OtterBox.

The Pad Protector is a beautiful case.

Ten months into the iPad Era, we have a pretty good idea of what we want in a case: tilted typing mode, highly angled video mode, and secure coverage of the screen during transport. The venerable memory and Mac upgrade maker Newer Technology has entered the market with their Pad Protector, and it easily checks through these basics. What does it add and what things keep it from being the ultimate case for your iPad? Let’s take a closer look.

At first glance, this is a beautiful, well-made leather case, with top-stitching in the same color as the case. (It’s available in black or red. I was sent the black version.) While it follows closely to the Apple case, there are departures. First, there are magnets that seal the cover closed ever so lightly. Not a firm latch, but enough that you have to give it a good little tug to get it open. There are also small magnets holding the tab on the back closed. This tab, like the one on the back of the Apple case, holds the case into a wedge that can be used for typing at a low angle, or watching video at a high angle. The Newer Tech case has an extra hinge on the front, which provides a bit flatter side when in video orientation, but also makes it less stable in typing mode.

Magnets! Nature’s little fastener.

Magnetically secure. Notice the case is being opened on the left.

Another difference in the Newer Tech case is the iPad holding frame. On many cases, the iPad is inserted from the long hinge edge, which prevents the device from sliding out when the cover is closed. Some of these cases also incorporate a tab of some sort to hold it in place as well. The Newer Tech case has, instead, an open side at the “top” of the case, leaving the entire device free to slide out without disturbing the magnetic latch. After having my iPad slip out over halfway twice in as many days of use, I took it off and went back to a more secure case.

The open top slot is the Achilles Heel of this otherwise great case.

With leather cases, the case is as tight as it’s going to ever be on the first day of use. If it’s sliding out of the case while it’s under your arm on day one, that spells trouble to me. It’s a lovely case, and may weather well, but with this fatal flaw, I’m not willing to risk the safety of my iPad to test it further.

Included in the package is also a screen protector. While I’m not a fan of putting one on my iPad, some folks think this is a good idea. I tried showing what the clear screen protector would look like with some photos, and could see the difference, but I’m not sure you’d notice if the whole screen was covered. There is a color difference, from what I can see.

Protector covers the left half of this screen. Click photo for larger view.

I give the case one star. It’s well-made of quality materials, and very attractively priced at $25, but the design is flawed sufficiently to prevent me from recommending it to anyone. Add a strap to secure the iPad in the case, or move the insertion point inside the fold of the case, and you’ll have a solid four- or five-star case, but as it stands, this is a no-go.

I ordered one of the covers with it, but I may be carrying this iPad with me more than the original, so I will probably want to protect it a bit more. I happened upon a great article from Mashable that highlights 28 different iPad 2 cases. When I saw the Speck iGuy “case” I couldn’t help but smile. I can remember reviewing an iGuy case for one of the early iPods 6yrs ago. I even made a stop motion video with it. This new iGuy case is marketed towards kids. They can use the arms as handles. It will be available in mid April for $39.95. For those of you buying an iPad 2, what case will you use?

We save #1 and #2 plastics, soda cans, tin cans, glass, paper and cardboard. I wish my local recycle center accepted even more types of plastic; but if they accept it, we recycle it. That’s why I love it when people reuse old worn out and broken items for purposes other than what they were originally meant for. Remember the Grove Bamboo iPhone Case? Now Grove has partnered with a one woman company MapleXO to bring you an iPhone 4 case made from old wooden skateboards. 300 old skateboards are stacked up, glued and sliced into thin sheets of material that Grove then fashions into cases for the iPhone 4. Forty of the cases were sold on Grove’s website beginning at noon on Monday, February 21st for $200 each and sold out in less than ten minutes. The remaining ten cases are being auctioned off on eBay with 50% of the proceeds being donated to the Oregon Humane Society with one of the cases already selling for $810. I wouldn’t spend $810 on an iPhone case, but I respect what they are doing to recycle and give back to a good cause.

BlueTooth earpieces have been around for quite a while now. Most phones on the market and many computers can use this wireless technology with ease. While I’m not a fan for several reasons (detailed below), I keep coming back to the idea of using one every few years. MoGo sent me one of their units to test with my iPhone 4, and it solved several of the problems I generally have with earpieces – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The MoGo Talk XD2 is a case for the iPhone 4 that completely covers the back and sides of the phone. Built into the back of the case is a holster and charging cradle for the earpiece. The case itself adds a bit of bulk and weight to the iPhone, but the edges give a good grip and hold the phone’s face above a surface, should you happen to place it face-down. The back is somewhat of a camel’s hump on the back, but it fits nicely in your hand.

The case itself covers the buttons (except for the mute switch) with flexible caps that feel exactly like the buttons themselves – a nice touch. The opening for the mute switch looks to be shaped to accommodate both Verizon and AT&T iPhones. My AT&T unit’s switch is high in the opening, and the Verizon phone switch is lower, but I have no way to check it out.

Volume buttons and hole for mute switch

There is a port for the Apple 30-pin connector in the base, as well as holes for the speaker and mic. The sync cable port is fine with Apple’s cable, but several of the other cables I have (longer ones with side clips especially) didn’t engage fully. Beside the sync cable port, there is a microUSB connector for charging the cradle. There is no LED or other indicator to show the amount of charge on either the case/cradle or the earpiece. The single LED on the earpiece glows red when it’s not charged but plugged in, and blue when it’s fully charged. This is a bit irritating, as you don’t know if you have five hours of time left or five minutes.

Bottom ports

The included USB to microUSB cable is short, just over 2 feet, but of good quality.

Ports and cable

The earpiece clicks into the cradle easily by wedging under a soft rubber pad. Finger pressure on the opposite side pops it out for use.

The earpiece holds tightly, yet releases easily.

Using the MoGo Talk was very natural. With the earpiece snapped into the case, it’s always with you. This is one of my main negative issues with BlueTooth earpieces – they tend to be a pain to carry around and keep up with. They are great, especially when driving, or if you want to take notes, or read info on the Web while you’re talking, it’s nice to not have to use the speaker phone, but I have lost or broken a few trying to carry them around.

The sound of the earpiece, while not perfect, is quite good for a unit that folds perfectly flat. I thought it would be much worse, or fit imperfectly, but the rubber cup holds it into your ear, and seals out environmental noise nicely. The BlueTooth connection never gave me any static or difficulty in syncing, except when I was using other BlueTooth devices at the same time.

There are no special bells and whistles like on some other earpieces: no noise-cancellation, no apps you can download, no voice recognition, other than what’s offered through iOS’s native Voice Command. At a price of $99, it’s a bit on the high end for a plain vanilla earpiece, but the case and cradle is quite a well-integrated combination. In the few weeks that I’ve been using it, I’ve not seen any cracking or flaking of the materials, and the cradle retains a good hold on the earpiece.

I give it four stars overall. Design, concept and execution are all well done. A bit more feedback for power and a slightly lower price and this could be a 5-star unit, but I don’t think anyone in occasional need of a BlueTooth earpiece will feel they made a bad purchase.

WaterField is a company that makes bags, sleeves and cases that protect expensive tech toys. I own two of their iPhone/iPod Travel Cases and still use the large-sized one (I outgrew the other one). This bag still looks almost brand new after two years of constant daily stuffing and re-stuffing. That’s amazing. So when WaterField sent me an iPhone Smart Case to review, I was interested.

Being a total klutz, I have dropped my iPhone several times, so I ALWAYS have it in a case of some kind. The iPhone Smart Case completely covers the iPhone, front and back, so you cannot use the phone unless you remove it first. That was a problem. There was no way I was going to insert and remove an unprotected iPhone from the Smart Case just to make a call, check email or whatever. I need to be able to use my iPhone while it is still in a semi-permanent case. This was nonnegotiable.

Well, I guess WaterField calls this a Smart Case for a reason. It’s really more like an outer jacket, than an inclusive case, meaning I can keep the case I already have and still have room to slip it into the Smart Case. So while I can – and do –drop my iPhone while in its shell case, when it has the added protection of the Smart Case, I can actually toss it across a room if I feel like it. Really.

The Smart Case comes fully padded with semi-rigid walls. In other words, it holds its shape. It’s interior is lined with ultrasuade liner to prevent scratching (yes, the iPhone’s tough glass front will scratch if you’re careless). Both the iPhone 3G/3GS and iPhone 4 fit perfectly inside their specific case. Obviously, with the shell case on, it becomes a tighter fit. There are six panel colors to choose from and all come with weathered leather trim giving the Smart Case a classic, well-travelled look.

A stretchy pocket on the outside can hold ear buds, cards, money, whatever.

I’m using the Slip model, which is self explanatory. It’s a basic version covering all sides except the top. Other versions include the Flap, which comes with a strap that wraps around a shoulder of a back pack or the Clip which clips to your belt. The style matches perfectly with other WaterField bags and pouches. The quality of workmanship – like their other products – is very good.

The WaterField Smart Case is made for one purpose, but the way it’s designed allows for more flexibility than a normal iPhone case. If you are coordinated and just have to use your iPhone in all its naked glory, the Smart Case is all you need. But if you are butterfingered like me, the Smart Case becomes more like added insurance than a stand alone case.

Ampigo Battery Case with USB charger

If you depend on your phone for communication, power is of a major concern to you. With the iPhone 3G and 3Gs, power was a bit thin – 3G network speed meant fewer active hours. With the iPhone 4, the battery is a lot beefier and the processor is a bit more powerful, for a net gain in usage time, but true geeks still need more juice. Other than carrying around cables and power blocks, what’s the solution? Ampigo has an answer, and it will allow you to have power for both devices: their Personal Speaker and Battery Pack. (Catchy name, huh?)

When I first was sent this unit to review, I wrote back and explained that I had the iPhone 4, not the 3G/3Gs that the label said the unit was designed for. Soon I had a response that it will, indeed work for either form factor. I opened the box, and found that it does! They are updating the box and I got an old package, apparently. The overall form is a sled of plastic that completely covers the back of the device (with a hole for the camera lens) with a 30-pin connector in the bottom to hold it in.

Camera port

Since it’s designed for both form factors, there is a bit of a gap either on the back or the sides, but the connection is ok. (I noticed a little side-to-side motion with my iPhone 4, which might get worse over time, but I don’t leave my phone in this case all the time.) The sides are covered about 60% of the way up each side.

Top exposure

Across the bottom, under the connector, the case extends a little less than an inch and contains two speakers, slightly larger than Apple’s earbuds. On the back, there are two buttons on either side of a row of blue LEDs. One button will activate and deactivate the speakers, the other shows available charge via the LEDs for a few seconds. In the bottom center is a port for the tiny charging pin. I charged the unit (proprietary USB charging cable only), which took over an hour the first time. Subsequent charges, even from completely dead, took about 30-45 minutes. The LEDs flash while charging, but give no indication of progress. You have to unplug and press the power button to see how far along you are.

LEDs and buttons

When in use, the unit keeps the battery going an extra 80% or so. The website mentions 30 hours music and 7.5 hours talk time, but that much use takes me several days, and the battery would drop power on it’s on during that time, making real testing difficult. It’s a notable increase, but not quite doubling. Rated at 1700 mAh, the battery is similar in power to the built-in battery in current iPhones. When playing an action intensive game, the case was able to raise the battery up about 2 percent in less than ten minutes. Allowing the phone to rest fully made for even faster charge times. If your phone is below 50%, a full Ampigo will recharge it to nearly full in less than 2 hours.

The speakers, though small in size, gave a noticeable boost to the built-in mono speaker of the iPhone. I don’t know if it’s just the stereo filling out the sound or what, but handheld games were quite lot more fun. Since they point toward the user, rather than into your palm, the sound never got muted when in intense action sequences. (The iPhone’s built-in speaker, which is flush to the bottom of the phone, often gets fully covered by a finger when playing landscape-oriented games.)

The speakers are small, but quite nice.

The market for battery cases is somewhat limited, but there are a few well-known brands out there. I’ve used several, and seen others in action, so I can’t help but compare this device to what I’ve known of this class of products in the past. A few things immediately jumped out at me. First, a non-standard USB cable. If you’re taking your computer and iPhone for a long ride into nowhere, you’ll have to carry their proprietary cable as well as a regular iPhone charge/sync cable. In this day of emerging standards, you’d think all manufacturer would start to put that miniUSB port to work, rather than making their own. (The EU has already mandated that all phones must use miniUSB in the next few years. Have these guys not heard about that?) Also, this means you can’t sync while in the case. You’re going to have to pull the iPhone out of the case, plug it in with a charge/sync cable, and then put it back in. What protects your iPhone in the meantime?

The tiny power connector port

The second thing that I had issues with is the stand-by time while not on the iPhone. I usually carry a battery pack in my bag while traveling, and only install it when I need the extra juice. This one looses about one LED per day, even just sitting on my desk. By contrast, the market leader will loose about one LED of charge a week when not connected. Quite a difference.

The very first thing I noted when pulling this out of the package, however, is that the surface of the case is super-slick, almost to the point of being polished and oiled. I have dry skin, so maybe I’m just sensitive to this, but I couldn’t keep it in my hands. It’s like a bar of soap in the shower! I know, I know, glossy is good for some folks, but there should be some place where you can get some friction to hold on to your phone. It slid across seats and car consoles, as well. A few groves or a nubby strip on the edge or something would go a long way to making this a safer case for the iPhone.

The hole on the back of the case, although well-placed, is not large enough to allow for the flash on the iPhone 4 camera. Using the flash just made the picture over-exposed. For these reasons, I give this product two out of five stars. It’s an oaky product, but there are others in the same price bracket that are far more user-friendly, have standard plugs, allow syncing in the case, etc.

I love digital devices, but I can still appreciate the feel of a nicely bound book in my hand. How about we combine an iPad and a nice leather bound book into one device? We can with the iCase from Powis. Powis has 15 different leather book style iPad cases and even more non-leather cases to choose from. They sent me samples to review. Let’s take a look.

I was sent the Heavy Grain case and the Embossed Floral case that you see above. Both cases are extremely well made, just like a hard bound book. Isn’t the embossed case gorgeous? It looks like tooled leather and is made of 100% recycled cowhide fibers.

I really appreciate that the front doesn’t have a logo. It’s just nice leather goodness.

Flip it over and you’ll see an elastic hand strap that can also be used to secure the top cover. You’ll also notice one of the features that makes the iCase unique. A fold out stand. We’ll talk more about the stand in a minute.

When you open the cover, you will find the iPad holder, which is made of a thick Black plastic.

You’ll also notice that my web address is stamped on the inside front cover. Optional personalization can be done for $9.95.

The iPad fits into the holder very securely. It takes a little effort to snap it in and remove it. But once installed, it’s not going anywhere and you will have access to all the buttons and ports.

You can tuck business cards under the plastic flap on the inside front cover.

There’s also a hidden screen cloth located under the iPad.

When you’re done polishing the screen, just wrap it around the handle and slide it back under the iPad.

The cover will stay closed on its own, but if you prefer to secure it in place, you can use the wide elastic band that is attached to the back cover. Just stretch it over the front flap and you’re all set.

One drawback is that the Powis iCase does add noticeable bulk to your iPad.

However, it also does a good job of disguising your expensive tablet as a book.

In addition to protecting your iPad from everyday wear and tear, the iCase offers a built in stand.

The plastic stand easily flips up to provide two viewing angles and a variety of viewing options. Here are just a few ways to use it. Powis site shows 9 ways.

You can use it this way…

Or this way…

Or even in portrait orientation as shown above. The edges of the book covers have a rubber coating, that will keep the case from sliding around on the table.

You can also fold the top cover behind the iPad and use it that way too.

I was very impressed with the Powis iCase. All the materials look and feel very high quality and I could find no defects in the workmanship. I normally prefer to keep my iPad in a slip cover, so I can just slide it out and use it without a case. But I’ve really enjoyed using my iPad in the iCase even with the additional bulk. I guess I just like the way it looks and feels. If bulk isn’t a worry for you and you want to carry and use your iPad like a favorite book, the Powis iCase will not let you down.
