This may look like a microphone, but it’s really a speaker for your MP3 player.  The Microphone Speaker from Molla Space is 1.5″ x 1.5″  x  3″ long.  Remove the handle to expose the 3.5mm audio plug that works with any audio device with a 3.5mm audio jack.  It has a built-in, USB-chargeable lithium-ion battery, so it doesn’t drain your MP3 player’s battery.  You’ll get about 4 hours of music from a charge.  The Microphone Speaker is available in silver- or goldtone for $24.00 from Molla Space.

This is another Kickstarter project.  The Manifold Clock is a wall-mounted clock with a 30″ sweep.  The hour and minute hands are joined with a flexible sheet that forms a changing 3-D shape.  This “combination of simple mechanics and modern design is based on the mathematical notion of Riemann surfaces, derived from the log(z) function.”  Pledge at least $45 to receive a Manifold Clock.  Funding has already been exceeded, but there is still time to pledge and receive a clock.  The funding period ends February 23 at 5:00 pm EST.

Wipit is a small microfiber pad to clean your touchscreens.  What makes it different is that Wipits have adhesive backs so you can stick them on the back of your device, where they’re always handy when you need them.  The adhesive layer lets you restick the Wipit up to 100 times without leaving residue on your device.  They can also be printed with your custom artwork for use as promotional gifts.  Wipits are available in some retail stores, and they should be available soon on the Wipit website.  Check their Facebook page for more information.

I really NEED this handmade leather cover for my iPad 2!  These covers are made by an Etsy seller who calls his store punkassjim.  Jim was inspired by the cover of an 1940s electrical handbook.  He hand-carved the embossing plate, embosses the leather using his car as the weight, and then constructs these covers himself.  They are stiffened with a book board and lined with microfiber fabric.  He scavenged the attachment post and magnets from cheap knock-off smart covers and uses them in his Electric Library covers, so the covers can sleep/wake your iPad 2.  The covers won’t fold into the triangular stand like the official Smart Cover, though.  The Electric Library covers are available in British racing green, navy blue, black, dark brown, and a red/brown leather for $89.99 each.

Isn’t it a pain when you have to look at your earbuds to work out which one’s left and which one’s right ? Or you find that you’ve had the wrong phone in the wrong ear ? Well the Japan Science and Technology Agency ( JST ) has a solution with their Universal Earphones.  Using a proximity sensor the Universal Earphones automatically detect which ear each phone is in so that you’ll never have to worry about your stereo seperation again. In addition if you share earphones (something that all teenagers seem to do), then the phones will detect this do and put a full mono stream into each earphone rather than just a single channel. Using only twigs, you can cook your food with this quick-lighting little camp stove.  The CampStove from BioLite is only 8.25″  x  5″, weighs 2 pounds, and folds up for easy packing.  When you get to the campsite, it burns twigs, pine cones, pellets, and other biomass, so you don’t have to carry heavy fuel cylinders.  The CampStove can also convert some of the heat from your fires into energy to charge your USB-chargeable phone, LED flashlight, or GPS.  It’s also useful to have at home in case of power loss or other emergency conditions.  BioLite is also using this technology to provide safe fires in developing countries.  The CampStove will ship in time for the camping season this year.  The cost is $129; you can reserve yours now, but you won’t be charged until the CampStove ships.

To many people, even the worst of news can sound better when said with a British accent.  And what worse news can you have every morning than a blaring alarm at 5am to wake you up and get  you started on your day?  Wouldn’t the gentle prodding of, say, Stephen Fry help to better ease you into your work day?  ThinkGeek has answered this wish with the Good Morning, Sir (or Madam) Alarm Clock.

There are over 120 sounds recorded by Stephen Fry as his character “Jeeves”, and just to give you a taste of this British wit, a sample wake up call is “It appears to be morning.  Very inconvenient, I agree.  I believe it is the rotation of the Earth that is to blame, Sir.”  The clock will still set off an alarm to ensure you get yourself up, but you’ll look forward to a confirmation by Jeeves once you shut it off, such as “Madam has a firm touch.  But very fair.”

The clock base is made of wood, not plastic, with the clock face similar to the above shot for the “Sir” version, and having little pink flowers on it for “Madam”.  It’s implied on the ThinkGeek description of “Sir” that you may be able to toggle between the Sir and Madam recordings if frilly pink flowers aren’t your style.  Both models run on 4AA batteries.

Plug this little paperclip-sized dongle into the 30-pin connector on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, and your Apple device can serve as a powerful universal remote control.  The Zapper from VooMote uses the free VooMote Zapper app from iTunes to let you control virtually all the A/V devices in your house.  You can define the layout of your remote screens, even define one-button macros to execute functions like “watch a DVD”.  You can also define different layouts for each room in your house.  If your device isn’t available in the device database, you can teach the Zapper using the device’s original remote control.  The VooMote comes in white, black, gray, pink, blue, navy, green, and red for $69.95.  It’s available now at Apple stores and Apple.com, although the online store seems to only have black and white available.

We all have periods of time throughout the day that are essentially wasted – whether it be during a commute, waiting in a doctor’s office, or restlessly sitting through a three minute commercial break until your show resumes.  What better way to kill that time than by practicing guitar?  Pocketstrings is a mini guitar neck with six strings and four frets and is about the same size as a television remote.  The idea is to work on chords and build muscle memory, not to mention some handy calluses, in places where having an actual guitar would be inconvenient.  There is no way to strum though and no prerecorded “correct” chord sounds, so it’s truly only a way to practice formations.  But it’s an awesome idea for hand fidgeters!

You might want to write this up as a post.

I got a Kindle Keyboard model Christmas 2010. ByNovember 2011, some of the letters on the keyboard had started to fade. (I play a lot of word games that require typing on the keyboard.)   By the end of January 2012 the “I” “O” and “A” were completely blank. And it was very hard to read the “S”.

I wrote to Kindle-feedback@amazon.com and told them how disappointed I was with the situation.   Almost immediately I got an email back telling me to contact Amazon by phone. (They have a cool way of entering your phone number on their web site and then your phone rings and Amazon is on the line.)   After explaining the situation, the fellow told me that “your machine is out of warranty, but we make an exception for this issue.”   I take that to mean that this is a known problem with the Kindle Keyboard versions. And although Amazon doesn’t sell the keyboard models anymore, they do have ones available to exchange for damaged ones.

The new machine arrived and indeed the letters on the keyboard are raised from the plastic and look like they will last much longer.   I think this information should be made more public so those who are struggling with faded letters can get a new machine.

Perhaps you will use the Gadgeteer to publicize it.

In the image on the Left, you’ll notice the I, O and L keys are worn pretty badly. Sandee commented that they look much worse in real life than they do in these macro shots.

It’s good to know that Amazon will replace this older model eBook reader even when it’s out of warranty. That’s great service!
