Water drinkers have many choices of shape, size, and materials when it comes to water bottles.  There are plastic bottles, glass bottles, and metal bottles. Today I’m going to tell you about the DYLN Living Water Bottle which is made of stainless steel and has a feature that the majority of other water bottles do not have. It has the ability to increase the pH level of the water to make it more alkaline. Let’s take a look.

What is it?

The DYLN Living Water Bottle is a 25.4 oz. stainless steel water bottle that increases the pH (which stands for potential hydrogen) level of the water by up to 9+ within 25 minutes. Instead of buying pre-bottled alkaline water, you can make your own. This saves money and avoids the waste associated with pre-bottled waters.

What’s the big deal with alkaline water?

Normal tap water has a pH level of around 7. The DYLN bottle increases the pH level to around 9. Some people claim that drinking alkaline water makes our bodies less acidic which provides all sorts of health benefits like slowing the aging process, increasing energy levels and even preventing diseases like cancer. Some studies also show that alkaline water can help people who suffer from acid reflux problems. However, drinking alkaline water can be harmful to people who have kidney issues.

Design and features

First and foremost, the DYLN bottle is a very nice food grade stainless steel (316) BPA and liner free water bottle. It has a slight hourglass shape that makes it easy to grip. The removable silicone wrap also helps with grip and is available in several different colors.

The screw-on lid has an attractive bamboo cap and a handle. The DYLN bottle can hold 25.4 oz (750 ml) of water. Cold water to be exact. You can add ice, but you should not freeze the bottle and you should not use hot water in the bottle. I’m not sure if the alkalizing process does not work with hot water or it’s just advised because the bottle is not insulated and you might burn your hand if you fill it with boiling water.

How does the DYLN bottom increase the pH level of water?

Inside the DYLN bottle is a diffuser which can be removed using the included diffuser removal tool.

Using the tool to remove and insert the diffuser takes a little practice, but once you get the knack of it, it’s easy. That’s a good thing because you’ll need to remove the diffuser each time you hand wash the bottle or put it in the dishwasher.

The diffuser is a small steel canister that is filled with tiny gray “rocks” which are called VitaBeads. What are VitaBeads?

The VitaBeads are formulated to naturally enhance and revitalize your water. They are a proprietary blend of all natural minerals that increases the pH and decreases the ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) to create alkaline and antioxidant water for more effective hydration. The main ingredients are magnesium, tourmaline, zinc, and silica, which are heated to temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius to create the form and shape of the VitaBeads.

The diffuser has a lifespan of about 400 full refills and additional diffusers can be purchased starting at $10 each but the price is discounted for quantities of 3 and 9 diffusers.

What does water alkalized with the DYLN bottle taste like?

I tested the DYLN bottle with cold filtered water which I left in the bottle for 20-25 minutes before taking a drink. I didn’t notice much of a taste difference between the alkalized water and the same non-alkalized water in a glass mug. But I did notice a smell from the water as soon as I removed the lid. The only way I can describe it is the smell you notice on a spring day right after it’s rained. Only much stronger. I’m guessing that the smell is from the VitaBeads infusing the water.

To be perfectly honest, I have not done any tests to prove that the DYLN bottle is really raising the pH level of the water. That would require that I purchase some a pH tester which I have not done. That said, you can check out the video below where the maker of the DYLN bottle demonstrates the process.

I have been drinking water from the DYLN bottle for over a week and can not tell any difference in the way I feel.

Although I didn’t notice any health benefits, I really like the bottle because it looks nice and doesn’t have any plastic parts that touch the water. The bottle does sweat a little bit if you add ice to really cold water, but I didn’t have any issues with sweating when I mixed a slight amount of warmer water to the bottle. That’s usually how I drink water anyway, cold with some warm.

Final thoughts

As just a stainless steel water bottle, the DYLN Living Water Bottle is expensive but add in the diffuser and the ability to alkalize water and… well I don’t know if the price is right or not because I personally don’t know if drinking alkalized water is really beneficial. There is a confusing amount of information on both sides of the subject. My gut tells me that I’d rather just increase my intake of regular clean water than drink water that’s been soaked with little gray rocks. But hey, if you’re a fan of alkaline water, the DYLN Living Water Bottle is well made, holds 25.4 oz and will cost you less than buying individual bottles of alkaline water.

Update 02/09/17

I had a few complaints about my review because I didn’t test the before and after pH levels of the water. So I ordered a digital pH tester from Amazon. I haven’t tried ordering another set of batteries yet but will soon so stay tuned…

  2. If you know someone with a pool, they likely have a PH test kit that you can use to measure the level of the water. Be sure to 2 both the before and after sample.

    I looked at similar systems some time ago and they told me that my 5-stage RO system removes so many things from the water that the minerals had nothing to which to bond thus the adding of things to the water did not keep them suspended. Not sure if that problem has been solved here but the testing of the water will tell you pretty quickly.

    1. Swimming pool testers do not work.. they are not made for the whole ph range or 1 – 14.. they only roughly go upto 5 or 6.

  3. I thought we had a soil testing kit that Jeanne used to test the garden soil, but I wasn’t able to find it before I posted my review. That’s why I included the video in the review where he shows testing the water.
    I’ll stop at Walmart tonight to see if i can buy an inexpensive tester.

    1. No luck at Walmart. Went to the pharmacy, the garden center and the hardware area and they didn’t have any testing supplies due to the winter season (no one around here is using their swimming pool right now).

  4. If increasing the pH is the goal, why not just add baking soda? It’s cheaper, easier, faster, and you know exactly what you’re putting in (rather than a mystery ‘proprietary’ compound). A $2 box of baking soda will do about 500 gallons — or 1/2 tsp per gallon.

    1. From what I’m reading, baking soda is high in sodium which is a concern for people with high blood pressure and other issues.

      I also wonder if adding baking soda would negatively impact the taste of the water?

      1. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) does have sodium, but at the concentration needed, it’s not very much. 1/2 tsp per gallon will give you a few percent of your daily sodium if you drink a full liter every day.

        It could be that the undisclosed formula they use also adds sodium; most tourmaline (which they mention it contains) is also based on sodium.

    2. would you add salt to your water if it made it alkaline.. Bi carbsoda is a product of sodium.. If you don’t have heart conditions, high blood pressure, oedema – (swelling & retaining of fluid) and/or kidney problems you soon will have by adding carb soda into water to make it alkaline !

  5. I bought this bottle last week. I’m quite disappointed. I tested the pH of the filtered water I usually use and got a pH of about 5.5. I then filled my dyln bottle after washing it per manufacturer instructions. I tested the water again after 20 mins.(according to literature the bottle came with,water should be fully alkalized within that time) and there was no difference. I retested at 1 hr, 2 hrs and overnight…same result pH level of about 5.5.
    I love the quality and design of the dyln bottle and so am very disappointed the performance was so poor. Waiting to hear from the dyln company about this complaint.

  6. I found our soil testing kit which I thought I could use to test water too, but the range it tests is only up to pH 7.5 which isn’t high enough to for the DYLN water which can go up to pH 9.

    So, I’ve ordered a $15 digital pH tester from Amazon that will be delivered on Tuesday.

  7. I ordered two of these. Followed the instructions. Got foul smelling water. Was given addtional instructions:

    Hi Ainsworth,

    Sorry to hear you’re still having trouble with a mineral smell in your water. We recommend doing a vinegar rinse which will completely get rid of that smell.

    Here are the steps:
    Add diluted apple cider vinegar or white vinegar to your DYLN Bottle just to top of Diffuser (about 4 parts water to 1 part vinegar)
    Shake and let sit for up to, but no more than, 2 minutes.
    Rinse thoroughly with warm water and remove your Diffuser.
    Again, rinse the Diffuser and the DYLN Bottle separately. Ensure both are fully rinsed.
    Let the Diffuser and Bottle air dry separately overnight. (This step is very important)
    In the morning, reinstall your Diffuser, rinse Bottle with cool water, and continue normal use.

    I followed these instructions to the letter and continue to get foul smelling water from the DYLN bottles. IMHO this is a horrible product.

  8. This company is terrible!
    I purchased two bottles beginning of September. Mid November I still hadn’t received them. I finally get a delivery notice only to find out there is additional charges of duty (to Canada) in the amount of $55, which would put my total for two bottle and extra diffusers almost $250 Canadian.
    I sent them back for a refund and still have yet to receive it.
    After several emails, being told I will hear from there refund dept to have a smooth process etc etc…I have not heard and still not received my refund!
    Customer service is terrible, crazy it’s been almost 3.5 months since I ordered these and my $200 is just sitting in their account.
    Do not order.

  10. There is a lot of confusion about alkaline water and the alleged health benefits.

    The health benefits come from “micro water,” which is the deprotonated portion of water ionized via electrolysis. Because of its configuration, this water groups together in smaller clusters than regular water, and these clusters are more easily absorbed and distributed throughout the body. In addition, micro water functions as an electron donor and, as such, can neutralize free radicals.

    Micro water’s configuration gives it an alkaline pH, but it is this configuration that confers the health benefits NOT the pH.

    Adding minerals or baking soda to water raises the overall pH but does not deprotonate (remove an H+ ion from) the water and thus does not create the configuration of micro water.

    Again, for the health benefits of micro water, your alkaline water must be JUST WATER. If you’re adding something (minerals, etc.) to the water, the alkaline pH is for the resulting solution of water AND everything you’ve added, but the water itself is no different than what you started with.
